Report: Missing boaters alive?

Published on Sunday, February 21, 2010 Email To Friend Print Version

After an exhaustive search for five people who set out on a fishing trip aboard a 26-foot canoe on Sunday 10 January, the Royal Caymanian Police Service (RCIPS) received an unconfirmed report last week that one of the missing persons has been in contact with a family member.

“We are making urgent attempts to establish the authenticity of the information,” said the RCIPS spokesperson, “however, we have to stress that at this stage, we have been unable to confirm that any contact has actually taken place. We are actively liaising with family members and international law enforcement agencies to gather further information.”

It has also been alleged that a large sum of money was withdrawn from the bank account of one of the missing persons the day before the disappearance.

A source close to Cayman Net News has said that she has been in contact with the family members of one of the missing boaters and refutes the RCIPS report.

“They are also my relatives. If it were true, the family would be overjoyed and they would be rejoicing this evening,” she said. “None of it is true. People are just good at creating rumors. If any of the five missing persons were alive, they would have contacted their family members long ago rather than allow their families to go through all this stress.”

The five missing boaters have been identified as Astor Range, 36, Raynell Wood, 36, his daughter, Michelle, 13, Josh Gilman, 28, and Jamie Avila,
19. The crew failed to return to the Newlands Dock Sunday, 10 January, after an all-day fishing excursion around the perimeter of Grand Cayman.

“Since the moment we were made aware that Raynell, Astor, Joshua, Jamie and Michelle were missing, we’ve conducted extensive sea, air and land searches in the hope of finding them alive and reuniting them with their families,” said Courtney Myles, RCIPS Marine Unit’s Chief Inspector.

According to a police spokesperson, the white and blue fishing vessel left the Spotts Newlands dock at approximately 7am on Sunday morning. It is believed that the missing persons intended to spend the day fishing off the coast of Grand Cayman and should have returned by 7pm Sunday evening.

The RCIPS received a missing persons report at approximately 10:15 pm Sunday night, which led to a massive search and rescue mission involving a multitude of private boats, volunteers, the RCIPS marine unit and aerial support from Cayman Helicopters.

The 26-foot canoe was recovered by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) marine unit off the North Sound on Monday, 11 January, and has been confirmed by relatives as belonging to the missing persons.

The RCIPS also recovered other items including three life vests, a plastic bag with a jacket inside, and an orange shirt found by a volunteer diver in the Rum Point channel, which was identified by family members as belonging to Astor Range.

Contact with missing boaters dismissed as cruel rumour

Published on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 Email To Friend Print Version

A report released by the police service last week citing that one of the missing boaters might have been in contact with a family member is being called by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) now as being “no more than cruel and insensitive rumours.”

Despite numerous stories circulating throughout Cayman suggesting that some of the five people missing at sea had been in contact with family or friends, RCIPS officers were unable to find any person who had talked with any of the missing persons or who could confirm that any contact had taken place.

“Enquiries have also been undertaken with international law enforcement agencies,” said the RCIPS spokesperson, “and these enquiries have, to date, also proved negative.”

The five missing boaters are Astor Range, 36, Raynell Wood, 36, his daughter, Michelle, 13, Josh Gilman, 28, and Jamie Avila, 19. According to the missing persons’ report, the crew left the Newlands dock on a fishing trip aboard a 26-foot canoe on 10 January at approximately 7am on Sunday morning.

It is believed that the group intended to spend the day fishing off the coast of Grand Cayman and should have returned by 7pm Sunday evening.

The RCIPS launched a massive search and rescue mission involving a multitude of private boats, volunteers, the RCIPS marine unit and aerial support form Cayman helicopters, which resulted in the recovery of three life vests, a plastic bag with a jacket inside, and an orange shirt found by a volunteer diver in the Rum Point channel, which was identified by family members as belonging to missing boater Astor Range.

The 26-foot canoe was also recovered by the RCIPS marine unit off the North Sound on Monday 11 January and also was confirmed by relatives as belonging to the missing boaters.
