http://unsolveditn.blogspot.com/search?upd...&max-results=50 http://www.post-trib.com/news/1909667,gvigil1129.article November 29, 2009 BY CHRISTIN NANCE LAZERUS, (219) 648-3086 Family members shared at turns hilarious and touching stories of Benita Moore Spears, who disappeared more than 20 years ago, at a memorial service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Saturday night. Spears was 23 when she disappeared on Oct. 26, 1989. At the time, the Gary resident was a divorced mother of two sons, working at Inland Steel and attending school at Indiana University Northwest full-time. » Click to enlarge image Crystal Jennings and Dionne Moore Jones remember their sister Benita Elizabeth Moore Spears, in a candlelight vigil Saturday in front of the Gary Police Department. Benita disappeared in 1989. The ceremony was to remember her and draw attention to domestic violence. -- Leslie Adkins/Post-Tribune Police suspected her ex-husband, Johnny Spears Jr., of foul play in her disappearance, but no charges were ever filed. He was released from jail the night before his ex-wife's disappearance. He had served prison time for criminal confinement of Benita. Spears' family and friends held a vigil outside of the Gary Public Safety Facility at 6th and Fillmore after sunset on Sunday night before the service. Pastor Michael Steinke led the crowd in hymns -- "Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior" -- and several prayers underneath the darkened sky. Then, the crowd walked across the street to the church for the service. Benita's brother, Robert Moore, spoke of his sister's propensity to make everyone around her laugh. "I enjoyed our sister for 23 years before she disappeared," Robert Moore said. "I think you can see part of Benita in all of us." The family put together a photo montage of Benita that ended with the words "STOP Domestic Violence." Benita was a role model for her sister Dionne Moore Jones. "She played clarinet and ran track, and so did I," Jones said. "But there were some things we did differently. She got married at 18, while I got married at age 36." Youngest sister Crystal Moore Jennings said she always felt lucky that Benita let her hang out with her. "We would all follow her lead," Jennings said. "She would make us play school and we liked it." Benita's sons -- Johnnie and Duane Spears -- told of how much they want to see her again. "I just want to touch her one time," said Duane Spears, who was 14 months old when his mother disappeared. Jones read a letter that Johnnie wrote to his mother. "I wish I could cry in your arms," Johnnie wrote. A dinner following the service helped raise funds for local domestic violence shelters. |

Benita Elizabeth Moore Spears Benita Elizabeth Moore Spears Mother, Daughter, Sister, Niece, Cousin, and Friend Benita was born July 26, 1966 in Gary, Indiana, to the late Bennie Lee Moore and Conchita Augusta Moore. She began her spiritual walk at Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she completed catechism and was baptized. She attended Holy Angels Catholic School for elementary education and Tolleston Middle School. She graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1984 with honors. She was a member of the band, track team, Spanish club and Honor Society. Soon after high school graduation, she married and later gave birth to two sons, whom she loved dearly. While attending Indiana University Northwest full time, she worked as a temporary employee at Inland Steel. Benita was very talented and fun to be around. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, playing the piano and making people laugh. With much support and encouragement from family, friends, and the local battered woman's shelter, Benita had the courage to end a marriage in which she was the victim of domestic abuse and move forward with a promising future. However, her plans for rebirth were ended abruptly and mysteriously. On October 24,1989, Benita suddenly disappeared, causing her parents to experience the heartbreak of losing a child. Among those who still grieve her loss are her two sons, Johnnie Lee Spears, III (Harvest, AL) and Duane Vincent Spears (Danielle), Norfolk, VA; one brother, Robert Moore (Klade), Hobart, IN; two sisters, Dionne Jones (Robert), Avon Lake, OH and Crystal Jennings (James), Lorton, VA. Benita also has a close extended family consisting of a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives who were all special in her life. Benita now has a grandchild, Kamiah Spears, Harvest, AL, as well as ten nieces and nephews who know her only by name. Benita loved her family and would never abandon them. Benita is gone, but not forgotten. She lives with us in our hearts and minds. http://benita-moore-spears.forevermissed.c...ta-moore-spears |
