http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/09/30/2700788.htm New leads in missing teen cold case Posted 9 hours 39 minutes ago Map: Bathurst 2795 Detectives from the New South Wales unsolved homicide team have released new information about the disappearance of Bathurst teenager, Jessica Small, 12 years ago. The 15-year-old was last seen in the Bathurst CBD, in the state's central west, in the early hours of October 26, 1997 when she and a friend got into a car driven by an unknown male. Police believe the pair were assaulted. The friend managed to escape but Jessica was never seen again. The head of Strike Force Carica II, Detective Sergeant Peter Smith, says new information about the car was received after witnesses were re-interviewed. "The motor vehicle was a light coloured VK Holden Commodore with an orange blanket on the back parcel shelf and a number of holes on the front passenger footwell," he said. "That's very significant information and we believe it's a very particular vehicle and those particular descriptions should jog somebody's memory." He says even a small piece of new information can provide significant leads. "The holes in the passenger footwell combined with an orange blanket on the rear and a VK Holden Commodore, I think someone would remember that car," he said. "The holes have been described as not big enough to put your foot through but big enough to see the road through, so I think it would stick in someone's mind if they've been in that vehicle." A coronial inquiry into Jessica Small's disappearance is due to be conducted, possibly next year. |

http://www.westernadvocate.com.au/news/loc...es/2199754.aspx 14-year hunt for Jessica Small continues BY JACINTA CARROLL 20 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM HOMICIDE detectives from the state’s Crime Command have been seconded to Oberon this week to canvass staff at timber mills as police probe the abduction and presumed murder of Bathurst teenager Jessica Small. Police believe an employee at one of the mills might be able to provide information about the disappearance. Detectives arrived in Bathurst yesterday and were briefed at Bathurst police station before heading to Oberon today to begin the investigation. A mobile police station has been established in Oberon Street, Oberon to house the detectives over the next few weeks as they interview staff about the case. A media call will be held from the mobile station at 11am today. Jessica was last seen about 12.35am on Sunday, October 26, 1997 in the Bathurst CBD. Jessica and her friend Vanessa Conlon had attended the Amuse Me amusement centre on Russell Street, Bathurst that night and afterwards attempted to hitch hike a lift home. They entered a white Holden Commodore sedan driven by a male. The male driver stopped the car on Hereford Street at Bathurst and turned off the head-lights, before assaulting both girls and attempting to detain them in the vehicle. Vanessa managed to escape and fled the scene before alerting nearby residents a short time later. Jessica, however, has not been seen or heard from since the incident. Of note is the fact police believe this vehicle had a number of holes in the front passenger foot-well. While remaining tight-lipped about the direction of the development, investigators believe that a male employee of the Oberon timber mills was present at the Amuse Me amusement centre on the night of Jessica’s disappearance and may be able to provide police with information in relation to this incident. As a result, over the coming weeks homicide detectives will attend Bathurst and Oberon to canvass persons employed at the timber mills in October 1997. Detective Sergeant Peter Smith, who heads the investigation, said police would also like to speak to anyone who was in the Amuse Me amusement centre on October 25, 1997 – the night Jessica was there. He said anyone who was at the amusement centre should contact detectives via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The current investigation, Strike Force Carica II, is the second strike force to investigate the abduction of Jessica Small. It was established in October 2007 and comprises detectives from the Sydney-based Homicide Squad, which forms part of the state’s Crime Command. |

Jessica Small Police have begun systematically door-knocking about 500 homes of men who worked at a timber mill near Bathurst nearly 14 years ago to find a teenage girl's abductor. Investigators descended on the small town of Oberon today after narrowing the list of men aged 18 to 45 who worked at the local mill in 1997. In early 2008, the homicide squad reopened an investigation into 15-year-old Jessica Small's abduction from Bathurst in the early hours of October 26 1997. Advertisement: Story continues below When they re-interviewed one of the original witnesses, they discovered a man aged about 30 had been asking questions about Jessica at a local entertainment centre, Amuse Me, just hours before she disappeared. The man had revealed he worked at the timber mill, Detective Sergeant Peter Smith told reporters in Oberon this morning. "We've spent the last few months locating those employees and there are a significant number of them still living in the Oberon/Bathurst areas," he said. "They're obviously spread all over Australia but we're endeavouring to speak to all of them in the coming weeks." Jessica's mother, Ricki Small, said the past 13 years had been a "nightmare". "It's been a nightmare to live through and it's still a nightmare until we uncover something and the person who abducted her," she said. Jessica's sister, Rebecca, wept as she begged anyone with information to come forward. "We just need some closure," she said. "And we really miss her and we really need to know what happened." Jessica was last heard screaming in the back of a car just east of Bathurst about 12.40am on a Sunday morning. Her best friend, Vanessa, managed to escape after hitchhiking with the unknown man. Jessica's mum and sister plead for help Ricki Small has called on the person who abducted her daughter, Jessica nearly 14 years ago, to come forward and give their family closure. SOME old photos, children's toys and a roadside cross embedded in a heart-shaped slab of concrete are the few physical reminders that Jessica Small ever existed. Barely 15 when she and a friend hitchhiked their way out of central Bathurst in October 1997, Jessica's last known stamp on the world was her screams from the back of an old rusting car driven by an unidentified man. Her friend, Vanessa, fled the car after the man attacked them and ran to a nearby house for help, police believe. But Jessica disappeared from the flat, windswept stretch of road, along with the white Holden Commodore sedan and its driver. Advertisement: Story continues below Lead ... Photo: Kate Geraghty While the homicide squad set up camp in nearby Oberon yesterday with 20 investigators and a list of 500 people to interview, for nearly 14 years Jessica's mother, Ricki Small, has felt ignored by a ''judgmental'' system she believes cares less for ''battlers''. ''They took it very lightly,'' she said. ''Because I was a pensioner, I wasn't anyone famous or whatever, but [that] should never have mattered.'' While she is grateful to homicide detectives who recently unearthed a vital clue, that an Oberon timber mill worker was asking about Jessica at a games parlour the night she was abducted, she is bitter it took more than a decade for the information to surface. Happy but shy girl ... Ms Small dances with Jessica in 1997. Happy but shy girl ... Ms Small dances with Jessica in 1997. Photo: Kate Geraghty ''This is crucial information,'' Ms Small said. ''It could have been taken back then. It could have saved us years of heartache.'' The mother-of-three, whose elder daughter Rebecca joined her in an emotional public appeal for information about the abduction yesterday, said she sometimes felt numb. ''Someone was lurking around and someone had their eye on my child,'' she said. ''When you're in bed at night and you're alone, you think about it and sometimes you end up in tears.'' Police yesterday began the long process of interviewing each of the 500 males aged between 18 and 45 who were employed at the Oberon timber mill in 1997. The head of the investigation, Detective Sergeant Peter Smith, said most remained living in the central tablelands, but some were spread across the country. ''I certainly think that the employee of the Oberon timber mill that was in the amusement centre that night holds very significant information,'' he said. Ms Small is in no doubt her daughter, once a ''shy but happy girl'' who liked music and fashion, is dead. ''I really don't hold out any hope that she's alive because there's no way she'd stay away from the family,'' she said. Investigators plan to spend about a fortnight in Oberon and Bathurst as part of the renewed focus on the case. Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/missing-teens-mo...l#ixzz1PqMCRUFB |

http://www.westernadvocate.com.au/news/loc...es/2201023.aspx Jessica Small mystery can be solved, investigator assures BY JACINTA CARROLL 21 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM THE mystery of missing teenager Jessica Small is solvable, according to the homicide detective who has spent the past three years investigating her abduction. Detective Sergeant Peter Smith told journalists police can solve the mystery of Jessica’s abduction, which has intrigued Bathurst for almost 14 years. A massive police operation is underway in Oberon this week, with more than 20 specialist homicide detectives door knocking the homes of men who worked at the Oberon timber mills in October 1997, the time Jessica was abducted in Bathurst. Up to 500 men will be interviewed as part of the operation, which is the result of new information provided to police by a witness who was at the Amuse Me amusement centre the same night Jessica disappeared. Detective Sergeant Smith said the witness told police the man they are looking for made enquiries about Jessica during the evening as she played pool at Amuse Me. Jessica was with her friend Vanessa Conlon, and the pair were socialising at the amusement centre, moving between Machattie Park and Russell Street a number of times during the evening. “This male person was making enquiries about Jessica, which we believe is significant because it was only a matter of hours before she was abducted. We believe this man could hold information which is significant, and we urge him to come forward” Detective Sergeant Smith told a media call yesterday. The witness told police during the same conversation with the man he indicated he worked at the Oberon timber mills. Detective Sergeant Smith said officers attached to Strike Force Carica II had spent the past few months locating all male employees aged between 18 and 30 who were employed at the Oberon mills in October 1997 – no easy task given 13 years have passed since Jessica’s abduction, and statutory requirements mean employers are only required to keep records for seven years. Still, detectives have managed to track down every male, the majority of whom still reside in the Bathurst and Oberon areas. They will be interviewed by detectives this week. A small number of men who have moved interstate will also be interviewed by homicide officers this week. Anyone with information on Jessica Small should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. |

http://www.westernadvocate.com.au/news/loc...us/2201022.aspx PLEASE HELP US BY JACINTA CARROLL 21 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM Rebecca and her mother Ricki travelled to Oberon yesterday as police launched a massive operation in a bid to flush out a man they believe holds the key to Jessica’s 1997 abduction. Speaking about the ordeal yesterday, Rebecca said until homicide took over the investigation three years ago the family had nothing to hang on to. “Since homicide took over we’ve had more hope,” she said. “They have done a terrific job, and we are so grateful for what they’ve done.” Rebecca wept as she begged anyone who knew anything to come forward. “We just need some closure. We really miss her and we need to know what happ-ened to her,” she said. Ricki Small said the family was desperate for answers. “We want justice for Jessica. That’s why we’re here,” she said. Mrs Small spoke of her nightmare existence since her youngest daughter was abducted but credited her grandchildren for keeping her going when things got tough. “It will always be a nightmare until it’s solved,” she said. Jessica was abducted after she and her friend Vanessa Conlon accepted a lift with a man in an early model white Holden Commodore [possibly a VK model]. Police say the car is distinguishable by the fact it had holes in the front passenger foot well, and an orange blanket across the back seat. The girls had been out socialising at Amuse Me amusement centre, and then accepted a lift with a man, who was to take them to a friend’s house in Kelso. However, he stopped the car in Hereford Street, and a struggle broke out. Vanessa made it out of the car and ran for help. Jessica has not been since since. |

http://www.westernadvocate.com.au/news/loc...up/2199814.aspx Missing teen's mum vows to never give up BY JACINTA CARROLL 20 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM THE mother of missing teenager Jessica Small says she is desperately hoping something will come out of a massive police investigation into her daughter’s abduction which began in Oberon this week. Over 20 homicide police from Sydney are in Oberon for the next two weeks, canvassing staff from Oberon timber mills in relation to Jessica’s abduction in October 1997. Rikki Small said it’s the first time something concrete has come out of the investigation, and it’s still ‘sinking in’ someone there could know what happened to her daughter. Jessica Beth Small was last seen on October 26, 1997 after she and her friend Vanessa Conlon accepted a lift with a stranger in a white Holden Commodore. The car, which had an orange blanket on the back seat and holes in the front passenger footwell, stopped in Hereford Street, where a struggle broke out. Vanessa made it out of the car. She heard Jessica screaming and ran to a nearby house to raise the alarm, but Jessica has not been seen since. Mrs Small said “something’s got to give” in the investigation, and described the 13 years since her daughter’s abduction as “sheer hell”. “The homicide squad have had a hard job, but they’ve been raking through everything as thoroughly as they can. “I think they’ve nailed a lot of people down through their investigation.” Mrs Small said she would never give up on finding out what happened to Jessica, and was pleased to see the development in the case. “I’m not giving up and either are the police. If anyone knows something they need to come forward,” she said. After waiting 13 years for something, anything, Mrs Small is hopeful. “I just desperately hope something comes out of it; we need to get this predator off the street,” she said. Mrs Small said she always had a gut feeling Jessica’s abductor could be someone living locally. “Peter [Smith from the Strike Force] received information and it has not been taken lightly,” she said. “It’s been sheer hell ... I need answers, the public needs answers. Peter is very dedicated. I just hope he solves it, even part of it. I need something to come of it all.” Anyone with any information about the disappearance of Jessica Small is urged to contact the Homicide Squad via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. |

Latest Media Releases Renewed appeal for missing teen as police mount operation in Oberon Monday, 20 Jun 2011 01:59pm Homicide Squad detectives have established a mobile command post in the main street of a Central West town as they renew their appeal for information over a teen’s disappearance almost 14 years ago. Jessica Small was 15 years old when she was last seen with a friend in the Bathurst CBD about 12.35am on Sunday 26 October 1997. Strike Force Carica II comprises detectives from the Homicide Squad and was established in October 2007 to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance. Homicide Squad detectives have this week travelled to the Central West area as investigations continue in Bathurst and Oberon. A mobile command post has been established in Oberon Street, Oberon, and will be manned during business hours all this week. Investigators are hoping this renewed appeal may prompt people with information to come forward. This latest operation comes after new information was provided to police about a man employed at a local timber mill in Oberon. In the coming weeks Homicide detectives will be conducting a canvass of the Bathurst and Oberon areas. Jessica was 15 at the time when she was described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 160cm tall with a medium build. Her hair was brown cut into a bob, she had blue eyes, and a fair complexion. When last seen she was wearing brown corduroy pants, brown shoes and a white cheesecloth top. It is understood that Jessica, and her 15-year-old female friend, had attended a local amusement centre on Russell Street at Bathurst the night of 26 October, before accepting a lift home from an unknown man driving a white VK Holden Commodore sedan. It is believed the man may have been present at the amusement centre on the night of Jessica’s disappearance and may be able to assist police with information in relation to this incident. The pair got into the man’s car before he stopped on Hereford Street at Bathurst, turned off the head-lights and assaulted the girls; attempting to detain them in the vehicle. Jessica’s friend managed to escape and fled the scene before alerting nearby residents a short time later. Despite extensive investigations, Jessica has not been seen or heard from since. Police are now focussing their inquiries on the man and his vehicle after information obtained by Strike Force Carica II investigators suggests that the sedan had a number of holes in the front passenger foot-well and had an orange blanket covering the back shelf above the rear seat. Information obtained by Strike Force Carica II investigators suggests that the vehicle had a number of holes in the front passenger foot-well and had an orange blanket covering the back shelf above the rear seat. Homicide Squad Investigator Detective Sergeant Peter Smith, said, “Detectives hope to speak with anyone who may recall seeing a vehicle with these characteristics in or around the area, or who may have worked at the local timber mill during this time. “Police also hope to speak with anyone who may have any information about Jessica’s disappearance or information about her attendance at the amusement centre,” Det Sgt Smith said. Anyone with information about the disappearance of Jessica Small is urged to contact Strike Force Carica II detectives via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/latest_r...0bWwmYWxsPTE%3D |

NSW Police have lead in missing girl case * From: AAP * June 20, 2011 4:04PM NEARLY 14 years after Jessica Small was abducted in Bathurst, police say they have their strongest lead yet. Jessica Small, then 15 years old, was abducted at about 12.40am on October 26, 1997. New information suggests a man, aged about 30, asked about the teenager at a Bathurst games parlour, Amuse Me, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. "It (was) frequented by young teenagers and on the night in question there was an adult male in the centre ... who was actually making inquiries about Jessica," Detective Sergeant Peter Smith, from the homicide squad told the newspaper. The man revealed he worked at a timber mill near Oberon. Twenty investigators reportedly went to the timber mill on Sunday with plans to interview every male worker at the timber mill who in 1997 was aged between 18 and 45. Jessica's mother, Ricki Small, told the newspaper that she had suspected the person who took her daughter was a local. "I've always had a gut feeling it might have been someone from around the Bathurst area." |
