-- The lifeless burned body of a woman was found lying in an empty commercial parking lot.

Irvine police were called to the parking lot of a closed business in the 1800 block of Kettering to investigate a report of a "person down."

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a deceased victim who appeared to have been burned.

The body was that of an African-American woman in her mid twenties, said Lieutenant John Hare of the Irvine Police. Her identity is not yet known.

Police say the death appears suspicious and detectives have been called to investigate the scene.

Orange County coroners will be conducting an autopsy to determine the woman's cause of death.

The burned woman was believed to have been lying in the parking lot for hours before police were called.

Police don't believe the woman was associated with the predominately business and industrial area where she was found.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Irvine police detectives at (949) 724-7194

Police release sketch of woman found burned in Irvine
Authorities are asking for public's help in identifying woman.
By SEAN EMERY
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

IRVINE – Police have released a sketch of the woman found dead and burned in an Irvine parking lot early Saturday morning, and are asking for the public's help identifying the victim.

The woman was found by a passer-by walking past a closed business in the 1800 block of Kettering at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The woman was found lying face down with extensive burns on her back, Irvine police Lt. John Hare said.

Coroner's officials have completed an autopsy of the woman's body, Hare said, but investigators are still running her fingerprints through law enforcement databases, and have yet to find a match.

Authorities described the victim as an African American woman in her early 20s, about 6' feet tall and 150 pounds.

The woman had no identification on her, and her car was not found, Hare said. Police believe she was burned at the Irvine parking lot, but she does not appear to be connected to the business where she was found.

The woman is believed to have been burned several hours before her body was discovered. Her exact cause of death has not been determined.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the woman's identity to call the Irvine Police Department's 24-hour tip hot line at 949-724-7192.

Brothers arrested in cold-case body dump
By LARRY WELBORN
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

SANTA ANA – Genetic material scraped from under the fingernails of the body of an unidentified woman who was strangled, set on fire and dumped in an Irvine parking lot in 2009 has led to the arrest of two brothers, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Gabino Valdivia-Guzman, 31, of Costa Mesa and Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman, 24, of Santa Ana were arrested last week and charged with special circumstances murder with sentencing enhancements for murder during the commission of a kidnapping.

They face a potential sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. The two men are being held without bail pending arraignment in the courthouse in the Orange County Jail.

Gabino Valdivia-Guzman is accused of picking up the woman in Santa Ana late on the night of Sept. 4, 2009, with Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman hiding in the back of his van, according to a news release from the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

When the victim began screaming after she discovered a second man inside the van, Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman pulled her into the back and beat her in the face and neck as she struggled to escape, according to the news release.

Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman is accused of strangling and murdering the woman before Gabino Valdivia-Guzman drove the van to an industrial business parking lot at the 1800 block of Kettering in Irvine, prosecutors said.

The two defendants then dumped the body in the parking lot, doused it with gasoline from a canister in the van and set it on fire before taking her cell phone and fleeing.

The woman's partially burned body was discovered by employees showing up for work Sept. 5, 2009.

Irvine police detectives collected evidence from the crime scene, including DNA from under the Jane Doe's fingernails. That DNA sample was entered into the Orange County Crime Lab database.

Last week, Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman's DNA was linked to the genetic materials scraped from under the woman's fingernails, prosecutors said. His DNA was in the county database stemming from a 2009 Orange County misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence.

Irvine detectives located Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman and his brother Saturday in a shopping center on the corner of Main Street and McFadden Avenue in Santa Ana. The investigation revealed that Gabino Valdivia-Guzman was also involved in the murder, according to the news release. Both men were taken into custody.

Authorities continue to try to identify the victim, who was described during the initial investigation as a black woman in her early 20s, about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. The authorities also released a retouched photo of the victim Tuesday.

Detectives were hopeful early on in the investigation that her distinctive shoes – size 10 Glaze brand shoes – could lead to her identity.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the woman to contact Irvine police detective Vicky Hurtado at 949-724-7194, or Supervising District Attorney Investigator Helen Moreno at 714-347-8492.
