Skeletal remains found in Brick Township Tuesday, September 01, 2009 STAR-LEDGER STAFF A man and his son looking for artifacts on the grounds of a former farmstead in Brick Township found more than they were looking for when they discovered human skeletal remains, authorities said yesterday. Ocean County authorities are trying to determine how long the remains had been in the woods behind the Havens Homestead Museum off Herbertsville Road, Capt. John Rein said. The remains were discovered around 5 p.m. Sunday, Rein said. Advertisement Rein said the remains -- a skull and some bones -- were found among some clothing, leading investigators to believe the body was that of an adult. Rein said at this point, police do not suspect foul play. The remains aren't old enough to have come from the former farmstead, Rein said. Police do not have any missing persons reports, Rein said, adding it is too early to tell whether the remains are that of a man or a woman. Brick detectives along with investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department searched the area for several hours Sunday night and again yesterday morning, Rein said. The Herbertsville Fire Department assisted with lighting and helping investigators access the area. The remains were sent to Community Medical Center in Toms River for further examination, Rein said. The museum is owned by the township but it was unclear whether the remains were on township property or an adjacent lot owned privately, he said. Anyone with information is asked to call Brick Detective Gregory Mullarky at (732) 262-1120. September 4, 2009 Tests yield details about skeletal remains found in Brick By MATT PAIS STAFF WRITER Tests on the remains of a body found in a wooded area off Herbertsville Road earlier this week have provided some clues, but police are still attempting to identify the deceased. The remains - which included a skull and torso - are likely those of a woman between the ages of 60 and 80 who died approximately one year ago, police said. Tests performed by Donna Fontana of the State Police's Forensic Sciences Unit revealed the woman was between 4-feet, 8-inches and 5-feet, 1-inch tall with brown hair and weighing between 90 and 130 pounds. In addition to the decomposed remains, police recovered a green long-sleeve shirt, black pants, a black leather "Arlette" brand jacket, brown wool gloves and white-laced shoes with a heart impression on the heel. The victim also had a key ring with a cartoon picture with the word "scrooge" printed on it, police said. A cause of death has yet to be determined and additional examinations and a further review of missing persons reports are pending, police said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...mplate=printart |

http://bulletin.gmnews.com/news/2009/0910/...t_page/002.html Police asking for help to ID skeletal remains found in woods Woman had been dead for about a year; cause of death still unknown BY PATRICIA A. MILLER Staff Writer Examination of the skeletal remains of a woman found in the woods off Herbertsville Road in Brick recently indicate that she died about a year ago, police said. Donna Fontana, a forensic anthropologist from the New Jersey State Police Forensic Sciences Unit, determined that the white female was between 60 and 80 years old, her height was between 4 feet 8 inches and 5 feet one inch, and she weighed between 90 to 130 pounds. She had brown hair, Capt. John E. Rein Jr. said. The cause of death has not yet been determined, but additional testing is continuing. Investigators are still reviewing missing persons reports for a possible match, he said. The woman was wearing a green, longsleeved shirt, black pants, a black leather Arlett brand jacket, brown wool gloves, and white laced shoes with an impression of a heart on the heels. The woman also had a key ring with a cartoon picture with the word "Scrooge" printed on it, Rein said. The remains were found in some underbrush by a father and son searching for historical artifacts on township-owned property near the Havens Homestead Museum on Aug. 30, police have said. The two went into the heavily wooded area off Herbertsville Road with a metal detector, hoping to find artifacts like coins and old bottles, Rein said. The son walked into the brush about 50 feet below the property line of the Winding River village retirement community and found the remains of a human torso, skull, arms and a pelvic area and called to his father, police have said. There are no missing persons reports from the nearby senior citizen development and no reports of homeless people living in the area, Rein has said. The father and son contacted police around 5 p.m. the day they found the remains. Brick police cordoned off the area and were assisted by investigators form the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigations Unit. Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the woman. Anyone with any information should contact Brick Police Detective Greg Mullarkey at (732) 262-1120. |
