One piece missing in decade-long missing persons case, Susan-Elizabeth Littlefield reports

By Susan-Elizabeth Littlefield - bio | email

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - It's been a whole decade since a woman went missing from West Columbia.

Police think the woman's sister could be the missing link to the case, but they can't find her.

Lisa Dianne Powell Smith's hair may be longer, or shorter, or greyer -- or she may not be alive at all.

Sgt. John Dollar volunteered to take over the case over to try to figure out what happened to Smith.

"About once a month, we track down any driver's license, criminal history; we have not found anything at all on her at all," said Sgt. Dollar. "All we know is she frequented bars between West Columbia and South Congaree which is what she was doing the night she disappeared. That's really all we know about her."

Smith went missing in April 1999. Her stepmother filed the report. As for the sister, she's hasn't been easy to find either.

"We can't get the sister to come and talk to us. Every time we find her, she moves," said Sgt. Dollar.

Smith has only one blood relative they know of. They want to get her DNA and put it in a national database to see if it matches any human remains to close this case once and for all.

"Because we can't get the sister to come in -- the only source of DNA -- we're kinda at a stand still," said Sgt. Dollar.

Police believe Smith's sister is in the Batesburg-Leesville area. They say they think she is not cooperating because she thinks she's wanted on charges, but they say she's not. They just want to talk to her about her sister.

As always, if you have any information about this case, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
