(Note the incorrect headline...the body was found January 1990, not 2007.)

Body found in 2007 remains unidentified

HENDERSON, Ky. — The remains of a severely beaten young man who had his hands and feet cut off and his teeth knocked out remain unidentified despite an earlier, false identification in 2007 that named the victim as Indianapolis area resident Scott Michael Morris.

“The victim was not related to the Morris family and it was not Scott Michael Morris,” Kentucky State Police Public Information Officer Joe Woo said Tuesday.

He was referring to what are now being seen as two separate investigations.

The first occurred when Morris disappeared in August 1978 at the age of 14. He remains missing.

The second occurred when the body of a young man was discovered off of the road near the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and South Hampton in Daviess County, Ky., in January 1990.

Woo said a detective on the case involving the remains of the body in Daviess County had received verbal confirmation that the body was Morris’. That information was released to the media in September 2007, and it fit with the police’s initial belief that the body was not that of someone from this area.

But in January of this year, that same detective told Woo that he had received written confirmation that two more steps in the DNA identification process had determined that the body was not in fact that of Morris.

Woo did not know why it took more than a year for the final portions of the DNA analysis to be completed. The agency performing the analysis is in Texas, he said, adding that there is one benefit to the recent results of the DNA tests.

“We can definitely identify (the body) as not being that missing person from Indianapolis,” he said.

Meanwhile, Woo said there are no missing persons reports that match the description of the body found in Daviess County.

Since the body is missing its hands and feet, that has made the identification process more difficult, he said.

“Most homicides occur in which the victim knows the perpetrator, so if we can identify this person, that can help narrow down the scope of this investigation,” Woo said.

“We are asking for the public’s help,” he added. “This is still an open murder investigation, and anyone who has information on it may call the state police.”

The Kentucky State Police can be reached at 270-685-3927 or 826-3312.

Anyone with information wishing to remain anonymous can call the Owensboro-Daviess County Crime Stoppers tip line at 270-687-8484.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Police: Body Found Not That Of Indy Teen
POSTED: 6:24 am EDT April 22, 2009

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Police in western Kentucky who thought they had solved the 1978 disappearance of an Indianapolis teen are back at square one.

In September 2007, Kentucky State Police announced that remains found in 1990 in Daviess County were those of Scott Michael Morris.

New tests on those remains revealed that they were not that of Morris or at all related to the Morris family.

Identifying the body was difficult because it was missing hands, feet and teeth.

The body had been found by hunters. The victim had been shot six times in his head and chest and appeared to have been beaten with a blunt instrument, police said.

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) - There is an update on the handless, footless body found in rural Daviess County, Kentucky 19 years ago.

In 2007, investigators thought they had an i.d. on the remains.

They thought it was Scott Michael Morris of Indianapolis, but DNA tests proved it wasn't.

Morris is still missing, and the handless, footless body, who was beaten and shot, remains unidentified.

Investigators really need your help.

If you know anything about the case, call the Kentucky State Police at 270-685-3927 or crime stoppers at 270-687-8484.

Ky. police to start from scratch in old case
April 22, 2009 10:02 EDT

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police detectives will start from scratch in a 19-year-old investigation of a missing person that they thought had been solved.

Authorities learned Tuesday that remains found in 1990 in Daviess County weren't those of an Indianapolis teen who disappeared in 1978. Police had announced in 2007 after DNA testing that the remains belonged to Scott Michael Morris. Police said further testing revealed he wasn't the victim.

Detective Juan Moorman told the Messenger-Inquirer of Owensboro that the faulty identification was because a technical document was misread.

Moorman said he plans to reread the case and see if anything was missed.

The nude body was found by hunters with the hands and feet severed. The victim had been shot six times and was missing all his teeth.

Unsolved Murder: Unidentified Man
Body found: January 7, 1990
Daviess County, Kentucky

PHILPOT, KY (WFIE) - The body of a white male was found January 7th, 1990. It was discovered 2 1/2 miles northwest of Philpot, Kentucky in Daviess County.

He was found nude in a sparsely wooded area off of Pleasant Valley road.

He had been shot six times in the head with a .22 caliber weapon.

His hands and his feet had been cut off. The victim was so severely beaten he was unrecognizable and some of his teeth had been knocked out. His hands and feet have never been found and he has never been identified.

A police reconstructionist drew the picture to the left depicting what the man would look like.

He's described as 35-40 years old, 5'6 or 5'7, 125-140 pounds. He had brown hair, and light skin with a farmer's tan.

Police say his eyes were possibly blue.

The man was cleanly shaven and there were no scars, tattoos, piercings or physical deformities on his body.

The body was not decomposed when found, indicating he hadn't been dead for an extremely long time.

In January 2007, Detective Juan Moorman attended a new detective's in-service at the Kentucky State Police Training Academy.

Detective Moorman used new information learned from the training to send a missing person teletype through National Crime Information Center.

On January 05, 2007 Detective Moorman sent a nation wide search utilizing known descriptors of the victim, which initially produced 19 responses. Those initial responses were investigated and dismissed due to the ages of those victims.

On January 31, 2007 Detective Moorman received a single response from the Indianapolis Police Department. This response contained information on Scott Michael Morris who was last seen on August 14, 1978.

In February 2007, Kentucky State Police detectives Juan Moorman and Angela Jones, and Detective Jerry Spurrier with the Daviess County Sheriff's Office went to Indianapolis and obtained comparison DNA samples from Morris' family members.

On Tuesday, September 11, 2007 Detective Moorman received verbal confirmation that the previously unidentified victim was in fact Scott Michael Morris.

Detective Moorman and Detective Spurrier are actively pursuing leads, and investigating subjects known to have been associated with Scott Michael Morris at the time of his disappearance.

The victim in this murder investigation remains unidentified.

September 11, 2007 I released to the media that Detective Moorman had received verbal information identifying the remains as being that of Scott Michael Morris.

Further testing has revealed the victim is not related to the Morris family, and is in fact not Scott Michael Morris.

Morris continues to be missing from Indianapolis Indiana.

This case remains under investigation.

Anyone who has information regarding this investigation is urged to contact the Kentucky State Police at 270-685-3927 or 270-826-3312.

Anyone with information wishing to remain anonymous can call the Owensboro-Daviess County Crime Stoppers tip line at 270-687-8484.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000.00 for information leading to an arrest.

WESTERN KY (12/6/11)— The Kentucky State Police (KSP) investigate criminal activity across the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky, and, in many instances, the information provided by individual citizens allows law enforcement officials to make important breakthroughs in difficult cases.

With this in mind, members of the KSP Post 16 in Henderson, KY are requesting help from the public in resolving the murder investigation of an unknown white male.

As members of the KSP Post 16 report, the unidentified male in question was located approximately 2.5 miles Northwest of Philpot, KY (Daviess County) on January 7th, 1990.

The victim stood approximately 5’ 6”-5’ 7” in height and weighed 125-140 pounds. It is believed that the victim’s eyes were blue; his hair was brown.

Due the graphic nature of the evidence found at the scene, which is attached below, some readers may want to use discretion.

When located, KSP investigators found that the victim was nude, had been shot a total of six times, and that both his hands and feet were severed from his body. Further evidence revealed that the victim had been severely beaten and that several of his teeth were knocked out. The victim’s hands and feet remain missing and the subject has never been identified.
