Canal Death Investigation

Bodies found in a local canal and investigators have anthropologists on the case. It sounds like a CSI script, but the investigators are working on a Desert Southwest case. KSWT News 13's Jennifer Jones has this exclusive report.

On February 11th, Imperial County Sheriff's office was called out to the All American Canal after a construction worker finds a vehicle submerged inside the canal.

"The vehicle had been seen in the canal a little over 2 months. A construction worker got curious went down opened the trunk and saw skeletal remains."

Imperial County Deputy Coroner Sergeant Charles Lucas says those skeletal remains are those of a hispanic male and female. "The male is between 20-30 years old, about 5'4 to 5'6, a heavy frame and the female is about 20 years old 5'0 to 5'3."

The vehicle investigators found inside of the canal, is said to be a Mercury Marquee from the 80's. Sgt. Lucas says the curiousity of the construction worker made their investigation more difficult, when he opened the trunk of the car and contaminated the evidence. "the car was upside down, there was still water in the canal even though it wasn't techniqually flowing, it took a couple trips back to the canal so we could recover the majority of the skeletal remains that we found."

At this point it's unclear how long the car had been inside the All American Canal.

Jennifer: Could it be more than 10 years? Could it be in the range of that or it's just unclear? Sgt. Lucas: Our anthropolgist is holding us to more than a year and we're waiting to see if other calculations with water temperature, clothing deteriation, things of this nature will be able to give us a more defined timeline."

Sgt. Lucas says they will now work with the Mexican Consulate on any missing persons in the past fews years. "We don't have any leads saying they were U.S. Citizens that are missing at this time... All doors are open for that."

Sgt Lucas says the anthropologist saw no signs of foul play. Imperial County Sheriff's office is actively looking for the owner of the vehicle.
