Fairbanks man, missing for 2 years, found dead in Pennsylvania by Chris Freiberg / cfreiberg@newsminer.com Fairbanks Daily News Miner 1 day 5 hrs ago | 5268 views | 9 | | 4 | | FAIRBANKS — Pennsylvania State Troopers announced last week they have found the remains of a Fairbanks man who went missing in the state more than two years ago. Thomas Zinza was 42 when he disappeared in February 2008 in the small eastern Pennsylvania town of Emlenton. Zinza was last seen checking into a local hotel. His skeletal remains were discovered by a hunter in a wooded area about two miles away from the hotel, Pennsylvania State Trooper Randy Guy said. No foul play is suspected in Zinza’s death or disappearance. Zinza was a disabled veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, his brother John Zinza said Saturday in a series of e-mails. As a Marine, Zinza was deployed to Panama and Liberia. He moved to Fairbanks in August 2001, but it is unclear exactly what led to him to leave the state in 2008. He called a number in the western Pennsylvania borough of Mount Pocono, Pa., shortly before flying to the Lower 48, but the number was out of service when John Zinza checked it. Zinza landed in Cleveland on Feb. 17, 2008 — the day before his disappearance. His eventual destination was Boston to see his parents and ex-wife, John Zinza said. For some reason, he never got on the plane from Cleveland to Boston. Whatever led him to Pennsylvania, John Zinza said there were “huge jurisdictional challenges” once it became clear his brother was missing, with Pennsylvania State Police believing Alaska State Troopers were the lead agency on the case because a missing persons report was filed in Alaska. “From my perspective, the law enforcement system failed my brother,” he said. This is not the first time the Zinza family has had to deal with a missing relative. A third Zinza brother, James, has not been seen since 1992. According to the missing persons site projectjason.org, James Zinza regularly moved around Arizona and after one move never provided his family with further contact information. “Many describe this as very sad for a family to lose two sons this way,” John Zinza said. Contact staff writer Chris Freiberg at 459-7545.
