Amber alert issued for missing 4-year-old girl; mother’s body discovered

Kansas City Police have issued an amber alert for the 4-year-old daughter of a woman whose body was discovered this morning in her Kansas City apartment.

Police were called to the apartment at 4023 Harvard Circle about 9:15 a.m. and discovered the 27-year-old woman’s body. The apartment complex is near Interstate 70 and Sterling Avenue.

The woman’s 4-year-old daughter, Allyson Corrales, was missing.

Police also are looking for the girl’s father, Luis F. Corrales, 31, who they are describing as a person of interest.

The family’s car, a red 1999 Kia Sportage, with Missouri license plate PB1 R3R, is also missing.

Luis Corrales’ car was towed from the apartment parking lot this afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477.

An order of protection was filed against Luis Corrales in November, according to Jackson County court documents. At that time, he listed an Independence address.

In December, a judge ordered Corrales to make monthly child support payments.

Police Capt. Rich Lockhart said the woman’s body was discovered after her brother reported that he had not talked to her since Wednesday night.

Amber Alert Lifted For Missing Kansas City Girl
Police Seek Father As Person Of Interest In Homicide

POSTED: 10:57 am CST March 6, 2009
UPDATED: 11:53 am CST March 7, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Authorities have canceled an Amber Alert for a missing 4-year-old girl whose mother was found slain in their apartment on Friday morning.

Investigators will continue to search for Allyson Corrales and her biological father, Luis F. Corrales, 31, according to a news release from the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.

The alert was lifted after 24 hours, but it does not affect the ongoing investigation, said Kansas City police Capt. Rich Lockhart.

Police described Luis Corrales as a person of interest in the "homicide/abduction investigation," according to the news release.

Corrales may have relatives in Houston and Manassa, Va., according to the news release.

He had been working in San Antonio but came back to Kansas City to visit his daughter on Sunday, police said.

Though police hadn't yet released the identity of Allyson Corrales' mother, her family said she was Katia Lainez, 27.

Lainez' brother-in-law, Orlando Melgar, went to her apartment in the 4000 block of Harvard Circle on Friday morning to check on her because her sister, Lelis Melgar, hadn't heard from her since Wednesday night.

The apartment management let him into her unit, and he found her dead inside.

Orlando Melgar didn't see any obvious wounds on her body, he said.

"I didn't see blood or anything too," Orlando Melgar said. "I don't know how. I don't know how."

Lelis Melgar said she was feeling pain for her sister but also was worried about her niece. In Spanish, she urged anyone who saw her to call 911.

Lainez had a restraining order against Luis Corrales and she had sole custody of Allyson Corrales, according to investigators. Lainez's family said Lainez feared Luis Corrales and that he was a very jealous person.

If you have information about where to find Allyson Corrales or her father, please call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS (8477), text TIP452 plus a message to CRIMES (274637) or submit a tip online at kccrimestoppers.com.

Amber Alert Ends, Girl Still Missing
Girl's Mother Found Dead In KC Home
POSTED: 10:59 am CST March 6, 2009
UPDATED: 9:43 am CST March 7, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police said the father of a missing 4-year-old girl is considered a person of interest in the case.

Luis Corrales

An Amber Alert for Allison Corrales was issued Friday morning after Kansas City police found her mother dead inside an east-side apartment. Police lifted it on Saturday, but only because they said the alerts lose effectiveness after 24 hours.

Officers said they found 27-year-old Katia Lainez dead at the Sterling Court Apartments at 4023 Harvard Circle. Her 4-year-old daughter, Allison, remained missing more than 24 hours after her mother's body was found.

Police said they want to talk to Allison's father, Luis Corrales, 31.

"There is a restraining order against the girl's father. And so, they're going to want to talk to him to find out what he may know," police Capt. Rich Lockhart said.

Relatives said the last time they saw Lainez was Wednesday night. Lainez's sister said she was worried about what Luis Corrales would do.

Lainez was found by her brother-in-law, Orlando Melgar, who said he went to the apartment to check on her.

Lainez's sister, Lelis Perez, said Luis Corrales showed up from Houston on Sunday night and wouldn't leave.

"Wherever you are, return the baby," Melgar said.

Lainez had filed an order of protection against Luis Corrales. According to court documents, Lainez said, "He told me many times that if I leave him, he will kill me."

Lainez also testified that she was afraid Luis Corrales would hurt Allison.

Lainez worked at the Golden Corral in Blue Springs. The manager said Lainez was great with staff and customers. Neighbors said Allison was often seen playing near her apartment. Other children called her Allie.

"She would just be playing along with the other children. When they'd ride their bikes, she would follow along, you know," said Marcia Sellars with Sterling Watch Group.

Perez said she's feeling the pain of her sister's death, and she's worried about what happened to her niece. Perez said she's concerned her niece is in danger.

Vehicle Missing

Investigators said the family vehicle, a red 1999 Kia Sportage with Missouri license plate PB1-R3R, is missing.

Police said a car belonging to Luis Corrales was parked outside the apartment.

Luis Corrales was described a 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He reportedly has family in Houston and Manassas, Va.

Anyone with information regarding any of this is asked to call 911 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Kansas City police issued an Amber Alert for Allison Corrales, 3, after her 27-year-old mother was found dead in her apartment at 4023 Harvard Circle in Kansas City.

Police said the girl’s father, Luis F. Corrales, 31, was being sought as a person of interest in the death — which has been ruled a homicide — and his daughter’s disappearance.

The family’s car, a red 1999 Kia Sportage with Missouri license plate PB1 R3R, was also missing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Police have not released the name of the dead woman, but family and court documents identified her as Katia Lainez.

Lainez late last year was granted an order of protection against Corrales in Jackson County, according to court records. She alleged in the petition for the court order that Corrales threatened her after she told him she was ending their relationship.

She said he also had threatened to take the girl and kill himself if she left him, according to the petition.

Along with granting the protection order, a judge ordered Corrales to make monthly child support payments.

Orlando Melgar, who is married to Lainez’s sister, discovered the body Friday morning.

Melgar said his wife had last talked to Lainez on Wednesday night. She told her in the phone conversation that Corrales knocked on her apartment door and she let him in, according to Melgar.

Melgar said his wife talked to Lainez while Corrales was in the apartment. That was why Lainez’s relatives immediately worried when they could not reach her the next day.

Melgar said the sisters talked every day. As Thursday wore on, Melgar’s wife grew more concerned. She drove Thursday night to Lainez’s apartment and noticed that her sister’s vehicle was gone and the lights to her apartment were off.

When Melgar’s wife failed to reach Lainez again Friday morning, she sent Melgar to the apartment to check on her.

Melgar said he told the apartment manager of their concerns and the manager allowed them into the unit.

Melgar saw Lainez lying in bed, as if she were asleep. The bed covers were pulled partly over her body and completely covered her face. Melgar touched his sister-in-law and her flesh was cold. He saw no obvious injuries.

Allison was missing.

“We just want the baby back,” Melgar said.

Melgar said Corrales recently had visited a relative in Texas and had returned Sunday. Police said he reportedly has family in Houston and in Virginia.

Lainez had lived at the apartment for about six months and worked at the Golden Corral restaurant in Blue Springs.

Bill Scheibe, the restaurant’s owner-operator, said Lainez was hired about six or eight months ago to work several open shifts. She worked a va-rying schedule of days and nights in the bakery or at the salad bar.

“She did a good job,” Scheibe said. “She would smile and talk to the guests.”

Scheibe said they learned of Lainez’s death from an employee who was close to Lainez.

“She came in here crying,” Scheibe said. “She said she had been trying to reach Katia all day on Thursday.”

Allyson Corrales: Missing child from Kansas City since 2009
January 26th, 2011 12:32 am ET

Allyson Corrales has been missing, since her mother, Katia Lainez was found dead on March 6, 2009 inside her apartment on 4023 Harvard Circle in Kansas City, Missouri. Her brother-in-law had gone to her apartment and had the manager let him in after the family had not heard from her for days.

Even though police believed that Luis, Allyson's father had taken her, authorities had to deal with legal issues. They could not issue a kidnapping warrant because after Lainez's death, custody of Allyson automatically reverted to him.

Several months later, after police received the DNA tests, they officially named Luis as the prime suspect in Lainez's murder and a warrant for him was issued.

Luis Corrales was last seen driving a red 1999 Kia Sportage, bearing Missouri license plate # PB1R3R, but the car was found after another man, who got the car from Corrales crashed the car. He told the police that Luis said he could keep the car in return for money to buy two bus tickets to Mexico. He drove Luis and Allyson to a Greyhound bus terminal where they boarded a bus heading to El Salvador.

Allyson Corralles was born April 13, 2005 and would be 5 years old now.

Luis Corrales is described as a White (Hispanic) male, DOB: September 7, 1977. He is an illegal alien who had been living in San Antonio, Texas. He has connections in San Antonio, Texas and Manassa, Virginia.

Do you have a loved one who is missing and need my help getting their story told and out there to the public?

If so, send me your story and pictures of your missing loved one, and I will feature the story on my Missing Persons column and the Examiner and also on my blog, Missing Persons of America.

Cable show to feature case of KC girl who vanished when mom was killed
More News

A national cable television show plans tonight to feature the case of a 3-year-old Kansas City girl who disappeared nearly two years ago after her mother was murdered.

Allyson Corrales was reported missing March 6, 2009, when relatives found her mother, Katia Lainez, 27, stabbed to death in her bed in an apartment in the 4000 block of Harvard Circle. Prosecutors issued a second-degree murder warrant for Lainez’ estranged husband, Luis Corrales. Police believe Corrales fled to Central America with Allyson.

Nancy Grace plans to feature Allyson’s case on a special show called America’s Missing, which airs tonight at 8 p.m., local time, on HLN, a sister network of CNN.
