Fresh death clues in 19-year mysteryHayley Sultanie

November 19th, 2008

POLICE have reopened a 19-year-old cold case in the hope advances in forensic technology will be able to assist their investigations into a missing person.

Businessman Jeffrey Wong, pictured, was reported missing on May 18, 1989, after he failed to return home from work at Currumbin and it is believed he may have been murdered.

Even though a body was never found, a coronial inquest in 1993 found Mr Wong may have been 'murdered by person or persons unknown'.

Investigators from the State Crime Operations Command homicide investigation group have revealed new advances in DNA and forensic testing have given hope to the 19-year-old mystery.

Detective Superintendent Brian Wilkins of the homicide investigation group said police were confident.

"Obviously we're very hopeful on the expansion of our forensic capacities in the last five years, let alone the last 20 years," he said.

"We are undertaking a complete forensic review of this case.

"Obviously what was examined and what could be gleaned by the evidence at the time could be significantly enhanced."

Mr Wong moved to the Gold Coast shortly before his disappearance and opened a mechanical workshop called Pit Stop at Currumbin, which has since closed.

He was married with a young family. His wife reported him missing.

Det Supt Wilkins urged people who might have any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

"Someone may have taken their car for a service, someone may have seen Mr Wong or they may have seen something untoward in the mechanic workshop."

Police seek body missing for 20 years
Marissa Calligeros | January 23, 2009 - 12:36PM

Having arrested two men on murder charges, police are hopeful they will soon recover the body of Gold Coast businessman Jeffrey Wong who disappeared in 1989.

Mr Wong arrived at his Currumbin workshop on May 18, 1989 and was never seen again.

His wife reported him missing and a 1993 coronial inquest found it was probable on the available evidence that he died from unnatural causes at the hands of a person or persons unknown.

In August 2008, detectives from the Queensland Police Service's Cold Case Unit reviewed the case, codenamed Operation Pitstop.

Yesterday, police charged a 52-year-old Scarborough man with murder and unlawfully disposing of a body, and a 51-year-old Currumbin man with being an accessory after the fact of murder and unlawfully disposing of a body.

Detective Superintendent Brian Wilkins of the Queensland Police Service's Cold Case Unit said it was likely police would recover Mr Wong's body soon.

"It's a great result for the organisation. It's also a great result for the community to reinforce that cold cases aren't closed ... and that investigators are forever hopeful they will get the persons responsible."

To date, 130 cold cases remain unsolved in Queensland, Superintendent Wilkins said.

"I'm sure that we will see further cold cases solved," he said.

Both men charged over Mr Wong's murder were to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

POLICE believe they have cracked a 20-year-old cold case after charging two men with the 1989 murder of Gold Coast businessman Jeffrey Wong.

Mr Wong disappeared on May 18, 1989, after he arrived at his Currumbin car workshop.

At the time, blood was found in the boot of a car on the business premises but his body was never located.

A 1993 coronial inquest found that Mr Wong probably died from unnatural causes at the hands of an unknown person or persons.

In August last year Cold Case Unit detectives reviewed the case, codenamed "Operation Pitstop".

As a result of the investigations, a 52-year-old Scarborough man was charged with murder and unlawful disposition of a body and a 51-year-old man from Currumbin Waters charged with accessory after the fact of murder and unlawful disposition of a body.

Both men will appear in Brisbane Magistrate's Court on Friday
