FBI Reopens 1964 Case of Local Boys Disappearance

Johnny Hundley and Jimmy McQueary Time does not heal all wounds. In 1964 two nine year old boys vanished from the Tri-State. Not knowing what happened to them still causes their families heartache. Now- the FBI is reopening the files - hoping to pull new clues from old facts. Local 12 reporter Deborah Dixon tells us, its never too late for answers.

The Fab Four had the number one song the year Johnny Hundley and Jimmy McQueary vanished. That year Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights bill and Fairfax asked the FBI's J Edgar Hoover to help find the missing 9 year olds.

"I was thirteen years old when my brother disappeared."

October 15th, 1964. People saw Jimmy and best friend Johnny around the village. They were at the Frisch's Mainliner. The boys never came home.

Deania Wilson, Jimmy McQuery's sister: "Forty four years I still come over here track streets try to figure out where my brother disappeared."

There were searches, sightings, digs for days... and nothing. With no evidence of a crime there was little the Feds could do.

Mike Brooks of the FBI: "You think that could be me wouldn't want authorities to just give up should be some closure in this case whatever happened."

Now the FBI Behavioral Science unit has reviewed the file. It profiles killers and suggests investigative avenues. The report is complete but confidential.

"This case is unique in the respect don't have a crime scene when behavioralists look at case most important thing is the crime scene."

Three years after the disappearance a 17 year old said he could lead police to the crime scene. Marine Pvt. Gary McKee was stationed in San Diego when he told a minister he murdered the boys. McKee lived in this home in Fairfax when the boys disappeared. He says he stabbed them to death buried them across the street. Police never found them. There were no cadaver dogs back then.

The AWOL Marine then said he made up the story to get out of the service. These are the questions from his original polygraph. It includes "Did you kill the boys?". McKee passed.

"I don't think someone could make up a story like that not just to get out of the Marines other ways lots of other ways to get out of the military."

I found Gary McKee at work a few miles from Fairfax. Off camera, McKee said he confessed because he was homesick and no one has talked to him since 1967. McKee says he doesn't know what happened to the boys and would take a new polygraph.

"If he comes forward wants to do it we'll give him another." Chief Rick Patterson plans to assign the old case to a new detective. "I think the answers lie here or start here."

"This is Jimmy with holster, got for Christmas his last Christmas." Jimmy's sister holds on to what she has. Photos, memories and one of Jimmy's shirts. Like most boys in the sixties, he loved cowboys.

"I just feel him in it, I see him in it I have dreams it's the closest thing I have to him right now."

No one believes the boys ran away. Most think their bodies are near town. After 44 years, perhaps the FBI can suggest where to look.

If you know anything that could help police solve the mystery of the boys' disappearance. Call Crimestoppers at 352- 3040. You don't have to give your name.
