Miami Herald, The (FL) October 9, 1982 Edition: STATE Section: GLF Page: 1B MEDICAL EXAMINER WANTS TO EXHUME UNIDENTIFIED TORSO Author: HERALD STAFF Article Text: Collier County Medical Examiner Dr. Heinrich Schimd is asking for the exhumation of an unidentified torso found floating June 13 in a canal off Alligator Alley about 37 miles east of Naples. Schmid said he wants the torso taken out of an Immokalee cemetery so he can X-ray the spine and compare the X-rays to those of a missing person. Schmid estimated that there is a 5 per cent chance that the X-rays will match. ***************** Miami Herald, The (FL) June 16, 1982 Edition: STATE Section: GLF Page: 1D Topics: Index Terms: UNIDENTIFIED, FLA-MURDER CANAL SEARCH PROVIDES NO MURDER CLUES Author: JEFF LEEN Herald Staff Writer Article Text: Scuba divers searching a canal off Alligator Alley Tuesday afternoon failed to find any clues in the murder of a young woman whose torso was found in the canal Sunday. The head, arms, legs and breasts were severed from the nude torso, preventing officials from determining the cause of death or the victim's identification. Without some clues, chances of identifying the body and solving the case look slim, investigators said. Collier County Medical Examiner Dr. Heinrich Schmid said, "I had almost nothing to work with" in the autopsy performed on the woman Monday night. He said the woman had been in the canal between two days and two weeks. Schmid said the death was "definitely a homicide," but the method of was unknown. The word "drug" was carved into the back of the torso, but one investigator speculated that the clue was "too obvious" to assume the murder was drug-related. "This is a tough one," said Lt. Henry Booth of the department's Immokalee substation. "It's hard to describe a body when you can't tell what color the eyes and hair are," said detective Harold Young. Since the discovery of the body, sheriff's deputies have searched the area on foot, by boat and by helicopter. So far they have turned up nothing. The divers entered the water at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at the point in the canal where the body was first sighted by a fisherman Sunday. The body was recovered from the canal near a rest stop at the 37-mile marker on the northside of Alligator Alley, about halfway between Naples and Fort Lauderdale. Carrying a one-hour oxygen supply, the divers followed a yellow nylon rope, combing the muddy bottom of the canal. They said visibility in the narrow, 20-foot deep canal was "zero." The search was made more difficult by entangling water grass growing up from the canal bottom. One of the divers got tangled in a fishline and had to cut himself free. The divers, deputies Jay Green and Joseph Johnson, are certified scuba divers who with Lt. Jackie Kline comprise one of the few diving recovery teams in Southwest Florida. Booth said the length of the search depended on the clues turned up, but he doubted the divers would continue searching today. Sheriff's investigators are checking with surrounding law enforcement agencies for missing persons reports and similar crimes. "We've eliminating three or four missing persons reports," said Booth. The torso will be shipped to the University of Florida in Gainesville for anthropological tests police hope will provide a better physical description of the woman, a white female thought to be between 20 and 30 years old. The torso, which belonged to a white female between the ages of 20 and 30, was discovered in the canal by a fisherman. The head, legs, arms and breasts had been removed, and the word "drug" was carved into the back. Law enforcement officials said they thought the torso had been dumped in the canal after the woman had been murdered in another location. Collier County Sheriff's deputies searched the canal but failed to find any of the missing body parts. |
