Police Re-Open 25 Year Old Missing Persons Case

Written by Jim Mattern
Thursday, 21 December 2006
City Police hope re-opening a 25 year old missing persons case will help them solve the mystery and bring closure to the family of the missing man.

23 year old Bill Gill disappeared in the early morning of December 21, 1981, after leaving an apartment on Appelby Drive. Gill had been with a friend from his workplace Beneficial Finance earlier in the evening of December 20th at Jerry Browns Country Palace at first Avenue and 24th Street, and later went to the apartment with two women they met at the night club. Police say from that point on, no one knew what happened to him.

Sargent Phil Farion of the Historical Case Unit says he and his partner Sargent Don Yonkman re-opened the case two years ago, met with the man's family and interviewed people who saw him the night he went missing. Farion says new interview techniques and polygraph testing leads them to believe at least two people have information about Gill, but they're not cooperating with police. He says police presume Gill is dead, but they have no leads as to how he died, or where his remains might be. His older brother Rick Cook says the family has been unable to get any closure because of all the questions that still remain unanswered. His parents have since passed away, not knowing what happened to their son. Cook says he hopes by bringing the case to the public again, someone will have the courage to come forward with information that will help police solve the case, and bring closure for his family.

CBC News
It's been 25 years to the day since a young man by the name of William John Gill vanished, but people in Saskatoon haven't given up trying to find him.

Gill was last seen leaving an apartment on Appleby Drive in the early hours of Dec. 21, 1981.

William Gill disappeared 25 years ago.
(Saskatoon Police Service)
Earlier in the evening, the then 23-year-old Gill and a friend went shopping, then went to a downtown Saskatoon nightclub.

Although if he were alive, Gill would be 48, Saskatoon police believe he's dead. His case is one of about 20 cold cases the police service is working on.

Gill's brother, Rick Cook, said after all this time, his family just wants to know what happened to Gill and why.

"I'd like to know where, why and when," Cook said. "I'd like to have his remains. Then it does become closure … but just to know why, too. That's always bothering me."

Police said they have reinterviewed the people who were with Gill last and they believe one or two of those people may know more than they are admitting.

Meanwhile, they're asking anyone who knew Gill and may have any information to contact police.
