http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60222622.html Where Are They?; Mother begs man who gave Deirdre lift to get in touch.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: January 9, 1999 More results for: Deirdre Jacob THE mother of missing teenager Deirdre Jacob last night begged the man who claims to have given her daughter a lift to come forward. Bernadette Jacob made the emotional appeal after receiving a letter from the man who has made 10 anonymous phone calls about the student since her disappearance last July 28. Mrs Jacob said last night: "All we want to do is find our daughter. We are just parents trying to find our child. "We'll meet him anywhere, anytime. We need to ask him things to make sure it was her he gave a lift to." The lorry driver has made a series of phone calls to the Gardai and local media since last September claiming to have clues to her disappearance. On Tuesday Deirdre's parents received the four-page letter from the man, who has revealed that he is from Fermanagh. In the letter the man who claims to have given Deirdre a lift in his car from Klane in Kildare to Carrickmacross says somebody in the Co Cavan town knows where she is. "Somebody in Carrickmacross knows something. I wish I could be more helpful. I have only recalled the things she told me," he wrote in his letter. Mrs Jacobs added: "He did mention before that Deirdre was a student at college in England and that she was carrying a bag and that would have been in the public domain. "But the fact that he said she wanted to go to Carrickmacross was extremely relevant. "She went missing during a weekend with a college friend from Kingscourt, Co Cavan. "They had actually travelled to Carrickmacross on the Saturday and went out there on the Saturday and Sunday night." The man said in the letter that he didn't want to get dragged into the investigation into Deirdre's disappearance. "He says he's a fam- ily man with a daughter of his own and he'd like to help but the best way for him to be of help is to meet us," said Mrs Jacob. |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60662373.html I FEAR KIDNAPPER HAS TAKEN AWAY MY DEIRDRE HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY; Dad's plea for help to find girl.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: August 5, 1998 Author: Kelleher, Lynne More results for: Deirdre Jacob THE FATHER of missing student Deirdre Jacob said yesterday: "We fear someone has taken her away." As detectives stepped up their search for the missing 18-year-old, her distraught dad Michael pleaded: "Deirdre, please call us if you can. We miss you terribly." Gardai yesterday reconstructed Deirdre's last known movements, with a friend dressed in copies of the clothes she was wearing. The trainee teacher went missing from her home in Newbridge, Co Kildare, last Tuesday afternoon after visiting a local bank. Fears are mounting for the safety of the teenager who was last seen walking near her parents' house in Roseberry, just outside town. Detectives are worried she may have been abducted. Mr Jacob yesterday made an emotional appeal for the safe return of his daughter. "We just want her back home with us," he said. "If anyone has any information please contact the gardai in Newbridge. "Deirdre, if you are out there somewhere please call home if possible. "We miss her terribly. The last few days have been difficult. I hope the reconstruction jogs somebody's memory. "We're trying to cope at the moment and we've good moments and bad moments but mostly it's bad. Boyfriend "The last time I saw her was on Monday night. She'd been away for the weekend in Cavan and had a great time. She was so organised about everything that she would never go anywhere without telling us." Mr Jacob said Deirdre's friends in England and Ireland were helping in the search. "They've all been great and they agree she was in fantastic humour. We contacted her boyfriend in England but he said there was nothing wrong between them." Police and a film crew have retraced Deirdre's last known movements. The reconstruction was shown on TV. Neighbours have combed forests and bogland for any sign of the dark-haired student, and divers were called in to search nearby rivers. Deirdre, who was studying at St Mary's teacher training college in Twickenham, was home on holiday for the summer. Inspector Sean Lavin said: "Deirdre is five foot two and slim. She's got hair to her collar and was wearing blue jeans and black and blue Nike runners and a navy or black polo top with white stripes." |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60241213.html Put face to voice of mystery Deirdre caller; APPEAL FOR TRUCKER WITH NORTHERN ACCENT TO COME FORWARD.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: January 12, 1999 More results for: Deirdre Jacob GARDAI last night broadcast the voice of the mystery man who claims to have given a lift to missing teenager Deirdre Jacob. Investigating officers hope it will be recognised by someone who knows the man. The lorry driver, who has made a number of phone calls to police and to local media since the student's disappearance, has refused to reveal his identity. But he has claimed to be from Co Fermanagh and has a heavy northern accent. The tape recording was aired yesterday on radio stations throughout the country and last night on RTE's Crimeline. Segments of a letter written to the teenager's parents has also been published in a desperate bid to identify the man . Last night, Garda spokesman Superintendent John Farrelly appealed to the lorry driver to meet with police "face to face". He said Gardai had decided to drop their promise of confidentiality after the man indicated in a letter that he would not be contacting them again. "There have been nine contacts so far and a letter which arrived about two weeks ago. In that letter he indicated that he would not be contacting us again," Superintendent Farrelly said. "The contacts were often lengthy but the man gave very stilted information. "We really need to talk to him so that he can clear up these ambiguities and we can conclusively determine whether it was in fact Deirdre that was in that car or not. "Both ourselves and Deirdre's family are very anxious to establish the facts and a lot will remain uncertain until we meet him face to face." Since 19-year-old Deirdre's dis- appearance last June more than 2,000 people have been interviewed but detectives are still baffled by how she vanished. The broadcast of the man's voice follows a heartwrenching plea last week by Deirdre's mum Bernadette who begged the man to come forward. She made the appeal after the family received his four page letter. "All we want to do is find our daughter. We are just parents trying to find our child," Mrs Jacob said. "We'll meet him anywhere, anytime. We just need to sit down and ask him things to make sure it was Deirdre who he gave a lift to." In the letter, the man who claims to have given Deirdre a lift from her hometown of Klane in Kildare to Carrickmacross, says somebody in the Monaghan town knows where she is. "Somebody in Carrickmacross knows something. I wish I could be more helpful. I have only recalled the things she told me," he wrote. Mrs Jacobs pleaded with the driver to come out of hiding. "It was very difficult and a trying time for all of the family here over the Christmas," she said. "He did mention before that she was a student in England and she was carrying a bag but the fact he said she wanted to go to Carrickmacross was relevant. She went missing after a weekend away with a college friend who's from Kingscourt, Co Cavan. "They had actually travelled to Carrickmacross on the Saturday and had gone out there on the Saturday and Sunday night. "We hadn't mentioned Carrickmacross in our appeals at all because it really wasn't relevant at that time." The anonymous man mentioned in his letter the teenager's love of animals and his reluctance to get dragged into the investigation. "It was quite a long letter but actually very vague. He said things like she was very fond of animals and that she liked dogs," Mrs Jacob said. "That is very true of Deirdre. We have two Labrador dogs and she is quite fond of them but that could apply to other girls her age. "We really need to speak with him further. He says he's genuine but he doesn't give his name. "He says he has a daughter and he'd like to help in any way but the only way he can help is to meet us." Gardai now hope that the man will be recognised on the tape recordings or through his handwriting. |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-62079156.html PLEASE FIND OUR DEIRDRE; Distraught parents of missing teenager make an emotional plea over daughter.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: May 13, 2000 Author: Tallant, Nicola More results for: Deirdre Jacob THE heartbroken parents of missing teenager Deirdre Jacob yesterday made an emotional appeal for help in finding their daughter. Michael and Bernie Jacob from Newbridge in Co Kildare, wept as they begged for someone to end their suffering and tell them what happened to their oldest daughter, missing now for nearly two years. Michael said: "Please, for God's sake please, try and see it in your heart to alleviate this suffering that we are going through. "It is such that you can't leave it down. You can't walk away. If you have financial problems you can take a break and get away from it but this, we can never get away from it or leave it behind us. "A simple shopping trip turns into a situation where you are straining your eyes as you are walking along saying, 'Doesn't that girl look like Deirdre?' You want to run up and check their faces to see if it is her. "If there is anyone with even a fragment of information we are appealing for them to come forward. "Maybe with the long passage of time someone may feel they can't approach the Gardai. "We'd like to say that they are a very sympathetic organisation. They will handle that situation." Bernie added: "We are just begging anyone out there who can help us in any way. We just badly need help. "We have gone in all kinds of directions at all different times but nothing has led anywhere. "We just come up against a stone wall no matter what direction we go in. If there is anyone out there at all who can help us we would greatly appreciate it. It would make a huge difference to our lives." The couple were talking on Gerry Ryan's 2FM radio show where they appealed for help in finding their daughter whose disappearance has baffled Gardai. Bernie Jacob recalled how, when she returned home from work on the evening of June 28, 1998, she knew immediately that her 18-year-old daughter was in trouble. She said: "I expected her to be there when I walked in the door but she wasn't. "I got this feeling. I just knew straight away there was something wrong. "Panic set in straight away and I went around the house. "At that stage Michael wasn't home, he was going to be a bit late and our other daughter wasn't there either, she had gone to stay over with friends the night before. "I waited for about an hour until Michael came home and the two of us started phoning Deirdre's friends to see if she had called in to their houses. I contacted a cousin who lives beside us, but she hadn't been anywhere. "She was so dependable and would always let us know if she was going to stay for even an hour or two hours in some of her friends' houses. "She was a very dependable person so I suppose that is why we panicked so quickly. "Very dependable, very organised, very outgoing and a good mixer. She liked socialising and going out. "Very attractive and, I have to say, very particular about her appearance. She always liked to look well and loved clothes - a big passion of hers. "She always kept all her clothes very well - everything organised to the last." Michael added: "She was very, very happy. She was a very bubbly type of person and she liked mixing with people. "She was never down except for the usual sort of thing. She always had some buzz about the house. Deirdre would express her opinion in no uncertain terms and she was certainly very much together." Bernie said the last time she saw Deirdre was in the morning before she left for work. She said: "I called into her bedroom and she was in bed when I left. She was a bit tired as she had been in Cavan for the weekend. "She went up with a college friend to stay with their other friend who was also in college with them. "They had gone out every night and enjoyed themselves. She was tired and was having a lie in." Michael added: "She literally vanished. It was very difficult to watch the video footage of her as she walked around the town, going to the cashpoint, just before she went missing. The last sighting of her was walking across the road and into our gate after she had done her business in town that day. "She walked across the road and was in the gateway and we are not sure if she came back into the house. "There was nothing whatsoever to suggest that she had been in a struggle or that anyone else was in the house. "We checked around very quickly but when no-one knew anything we felt it was time to go to the Gardai. "They told us not to worry but they did take it quite seriously. By 11pm a lot of people were searching the area and that search went on until the very early hours of the morning. "As time was going on we were becoming more and more desperate. And then one day passed into the next. In those early stages we didn't sleep at all. "I think the first few months I went without getting any sleep whatsoever. We were exhausted and got through that pain barrier and went on and on and on." Bernie and Michael are convinced their daughter is still alive. He said: "Our instinct is that she is still alive. We feel she is. Obviously that feeling is a great help to keep us going but we have that feeling that she is alive." The couple told of the anguish caused by hoaxers who wasted months of the investigation. Michael said: "The most devastating was that caller from the North who turned out to be a hoax." He had phoned a newspaper after Deirdre's case was aired on Crimeline to say that he had picked up a girl matching her description and taken her to Carrickmacross. The fact that Deirdre had visited the Monaghan town two weeks before her disappearance gave her parents hope that the caller was telling the truth. Michael added: "What is horrible is that this hoax call took four months from the first time he called to when they picked him up and when it became obvious that it was a hoax. "We were very annoyed about that because four months had passed and huge resources from the Gardai and RUC and ourselves had been wasted. "We travelled each weekend around that part of the country, meeting people and enquiring in B&Bs. We were very angry. It is beyond description, the heartache. "The other one that is quite painful is that sometimes newspapers like to run stories based on speculation. "As we see it, this talking about serial killers is not helpful. It takes the mind of the general public away from the facts. What we have done throughout all this is concentrate totally on the facts." Michael asked anyone with information on his daughter's whereabouts to contact Operation Trace headquarters on (045) 884375 or Crimestoppers on (1800) 250025. |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60381402.html DAD SEARCHES BOGS FOR MISSING DEIRDRE; 'We believe our daughter is out there somewhere'.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: May 1, 1999 Author: Kelleher, Lynne More results for: Deirdre Jacob THE father of missing student Deirdre Jacob told last night how his family have being carrying out heart-breaking searches for his vanished child in bogland near their home. But distraught Michael Jacob said he is still holding on to the hope that his daughter is alive. "The whole mystery is so hard to take," he said. "We're constantly trying to piece her last movements together. "We believe she's out there somewhere. But in what circumstances we don't know. "We think she's somewhere where she can't call us. But if she hears the appeals we would like to tell her that we're here and anxiously awaiting any word from her." The Kildare father praised the Gardai yesterday for their thorough investigation into the latest tip-off from a mental patient, which proved to be false. "We are carrying out this type of operation ourselves all the time in boglands and rivers around us," he revealed. "We have made numerous searches this spring because it was very difficult to look last winter because of the amount of vegetation. "The Gardai are doing a great job. They're doing everything humanly possible to find her and it gives us great confidence. "The local officers here are always helping us with our own searches. Whenever they have time off they start looking into Deirdre's case." He said his daughter's baffling disappearance in broad daylight almost a year ago haunts him every minute of the day. "It's a horrible time for any family. Not knowing is just agonising. It drains your energy and is with you constantly. "The whole mystery is so difficult to take." Deirdre, 21, went missing in the middle of the afternoon on July 28 last year. The student teacher was on her way back from a trip to the bank when she disappeared just minutes away from her parents' home in Roseberry, outside Newbridge in Co Kildare. Gardai were searching for the dark-haired girl within three hours, but couldn't find any clues to her whereabouts. Officers from Operation Trace, which was set up within weeks of Deirdre's disappearance, have been piecing together the lives of the six girls who have gone missing in what has become known as the 'Midlands Triangle'. Michael Jacob said he believes there must be some link between their cases. "The Gardai are looking for any similarity or links between them," he said. "There must be some reason why all these girls went missing around Leinster. "They are totally determined to get to the bottom of it. The search over the last few days has highlighted the case again. "Any lead, no matter how small, should be followed. People should come forward with any tiny clue, no matter how insignificant. "It's like piecing a jigsaw together." And Michael vowed last night that his family would never stop searching until Deirdre was found. "We are constantly probing. We will continue until she is found. It might end with the next phonecall. "We don't know. At least we know we're doing everything humanly possible to find her." |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60288013.html GARDA BREAKTHROUGH IN MISSING DEIRDRE CASE; Prime suspect worked in area where 3 women disappeared.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: March 13, 2000 Author: Leslie, Neil; Tallant, Nicola More results for: Deirdre Jacob GARDAI investigating the case of missing teenager Deirdre Jacob have been tipped off that the prime suspect was working in her home town during the week she vanished. The major breakthrough in the two-year-old investigation emerged when a tradesman was arrested on sex charges. The middle-aged worker became a suspect in the disappearance of at least three women in Ireland's "Vanishing Triangle" when he was charged with another sex attack in the region. Garda detectives immediately began tracing his movements on the critical dates that Deirdre, Jo Jo Dollard and Annie McCarrick went missing. The Irish Mirror has now learned that Garda detectives received a tip-off that the married suspect was working in Newbridge, Co Kildare, two years ago during the same week when 18-year-old Deirdre vanished. They are now checking reports that the tradesman, who is not from the town, was doing manual labour in the area where he may have met the missing teenager. Gardai believe she was abducted and murdered. The new suspect came to the attention of Gardai when he was arrested and charged with a vicious sex attack on a woman in the Carlow area. He has already appeared in court charged in connection with the assault which took place within 30 minutes' drive of where 18-year-old student teacher Deirdre disappeared. Officers from Operation Trace, the unit set up to investigate the cases of six missing women, have confirmed that they will interview the married man. The Irish Mirror has also learned that detectives have since discovered a possible link to the Jacob case. The tradesman carried out work in the Newbridge area in 1998 - during the same week Deirdre disappeared. Detectives now believe that someone she recognised could have offered her a lift. The absence of any signs of a struggle or later sightings of her also support the theory. She was last seen near her Newbridge home where she appeared on close circuit television videos withdrawing money from a bank machine. Minutes later she disappeared, just like waitress Jo Jo Dullard, 21, and 26-year-old American student Annie McCarrick. Officers with Operation Trace suspect these three cases may be linked. The new suspect was arrested after hunters in Carlow disturbed a man as he assaulted a young woman he had picked up in his car. The victim was being bundled into the boot when the late-night hunters arrived on the scene. The suspect fled, but Gardai were able to identify him from the descriptions given by the witnesses. He was arrested at his home and appeared in court charged with abducting and sexually assaulting the woman. He came to the notice of Operation Trace because of the location of the kidnap - Moone in Co Kildare. It is the same village where Jo Jo Dollard made her last phone call from a public telephone before hitching a lift from a man who detectives believe murdered her. The spot is also just 30 minutes' drive from Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, where Annie McCarrick went missing in 1993. At the time of the middle-aged man's arrest, a Garda source revealed that officers were running detailed background checks on his movements at key times. Detectives now hope that the vital link to the Jacob case may be the breakthrough that the investigation has been waiting for. |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60611750.html http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60611750.html MISSING GIRL DEIRDRE SEEN HITCH-HIKING; I gave her lift says caller.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: September 25, 1998 Author: Kelleher, Lynne More results for: Deirdre Jacob A MYSTERY CALLER has given Gardai their first sighting of missing girl Deirdre Jacob since she vanished almost two months ago. Deirdre's parents went on a local radio show yesterday to appeal to a man who wrote to the Leinster Leader newspaper two weeks ago saying he had picked up Deirdre while she was hitch-hiking. The mystery witness came forward hours after Deirdre's mother Bernadette pleaded over the airwaves: "Please come forward if you've seen my daughter. "We know our daughter so well it will only take a few minutes for us to know if it really was Deirdre or not." The caller - from Fermanagh - rang Shannonside Northern Sound radio station after hearing Deirdre's distraught parents. The man - who refused to disclose his name - said the trainee teacher was in an agitated state when he picked her up a few miles from her home and brought her on a three-hour journey to Monaghan. He said she seemed stressed and had hardly talked during the journey to Carrickmacross. He said he dropped her in the town which was only a few miles from Kingscourt where she had spent the weekend before with friends. The 18-year-old from Roseberry in Co Kildare vanished on July 28 while walking home from Newbridge. The bubbly student was catching up with her family for the summer before heading off to be with her sweetheart in England. She strolled down to Newbridge where she posted off a deposit for her flat to her British landlady. But Deirdre never came home. Local people and police combed every inch of her route back to her house but there was no clue to her whereabouts. The head of news at Shannonside Northern Sound, Ann Norris, said the man believes he picked up Deirdre on the Klane to Maynooth road. "He saw her picture on Crimeline on September 7 and recognised her. "The timing seems to fit in because he picked her between five and six on the day she disappeared. "He called yesterday after hearing an emotive appeal from her parents to come forward. "He's from Fermanagh and refused to give his name but he did say that he wasn't a lorry driver." The witness said Deirdre was dressed like a waitress in a black skirt and white shirt but he said she had a black bag with her. A Garda spokesman said they were launching a full investigation ino the mystery caller. "We are taking this very seriously and are carrying out a full investigation. The man ran out of money when he rang us during the day and afterwards he rang the radio station. "We're anxious to talk to the man again as soon as possible. We believe he could be very helpful." |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60222199.html Missing case 1: Lines jammed as gardai hunt mystery trucker; Deirdre driver still not found.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: January 13, 1999 More results for: Deirdre Jacob GARDAI have received 100 calls from people who say they recognise the voice of the man who claims to have given missing teen Deirdre Jacob a lift. Investigating officers say the calls, mainly from the north of Ireland, will all be checked out in the next week. The lorry driver's voice and samples of his handwriting were broadcast on RTE1's Crimeline this week after he refused to reveal his identity to Gardai. Since the TV appeal, switchboards have been jammed with callers claiming to recognise the voice. Gardai refused to reveal last night whether or not a par- ticular name came up again and again. They say they will be checking out all names given to them by callers - a lot of whom phoned from Fermanagh, where the man is believed to live. Superintendent John Farrelly revealed Gardai's plans to broadcast the voice despite promises of confidentiality. He appealed to the man to meet Gardai 'face to face'. He said that Gardai had decided to drop their promise of confidentiality to the man after he stated in a letter that he would not be contacting them again. "There have been nine contacts so far and a letter that arrived about two weeks ago. In that letter the man indicated that he would not be contacting us again," said Supt Farrelly. "The contacts were often lengthy but the man gave very stilted information." The man, a lorry driver, has told Deirdre's family that he is married and has a daughter himself. "There's a number of gaps in relation to the information he is giving to us and we really need to talk to this particular individual so that he can clear up these ambiguities and we can determine whether it was in fact Deirdre that was in that car or not," said Supt Farrelly. "Both ourselves and Deirdre's family are very anxious to establish the facts with the man and a lot will remain uncertain until we meet him face to face." The Superintendent said it was not publicly known that Deirdre had visited Carrickmacross - the town the mystery caller said he gave her a lift to - when he first got in contact. Since she disappeared over 2000 people have been interviewed but detectives are still baffled by how she vanished. Last night Gardai investigating the disappearance said they were delighted with the huge response to their appeal - but disappointed the mystery caller had not contacted them himself. "This is very disappointing. After all the publicity we really thought he would come forward again," said a Garda source. "We are delighted with the response but worried about the fact that this man hasn't got in touch - we don't see it as a very good sign. "We will be checking out each of the calls we got and hopefully one of them will lead us to our man, who we only want to talk to about the lift. "If it was Deirdre in his car we can move the investigation towards Carrickmacross. If it wasn't we can rule it out. At the moment we are in limbo with the information he has given us," said the source. "This man has continuously raised the hopes of the Jacob family who have been travelling to Carrickmacross every weekend distributing leaflets. "If it wasn't Deirdre or if this man is a hoax caller we will be able to tell them one way or another." |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-74461511.html RAPIST QUIZZED ON JO JO DEIRDRE & ANNIE; Gardai question Murphy as he starts 15-year sentence.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: May 12, 2001 More results for: Deirdre Jacob Byline: NICOLA TALLANT GARDAI are to question vicious rapist Larry Murphy over the disappearance of three young women. Father-of-two Murphy, 37, will be quizzed in connection with missing Jo Jo Dullard, Deirdre Jacob and Annie McCarrick. Murphy was jailed for 15 years yesterday for the brutal rape, kidnap and attempted murder of a young businesswoman. The crazed attacker drove around remote woodlands with his terrified victim in his car boot. Now Gardai want to question him in relation to missing waitress Jo Jo, 21, student Deirdre, 18, and US tourist Annie, 26, who disappeared over a five-year period from 1993. Murphy, a carpenter from Baltinglass in Wicklow, is believed to have been working at a pub in Co Kildare on the day student Deirdre went missing without trace. And officers believe he may have been working in the Dublin area at the time American student Annie disappeared after a night out in Johnny Fox's pub. Jo Jo Dullard went missing in the same area where he raped the young woman during a terrifying ordeal two years ago. Detectives said Murphy has so far refused to co-operate with their investigation. But he became a suspect in the cases due to the nature of the abduction and rape for which he was jailed yesterday. Gardai added that Murphy - who had no previous convictions and who appeared to be a respectable married businessman - carried out the attack in a cool and calculated manner. "He never seemed to panic," a source said. "He made his victim take her boots off so she couldn't run if she got a chance. "He must have known the two areas where he raped her as they were very isolated and hidden. "It was only pure chance that two hunters stumbled upon him after he had told his victim she'd never see her family again. "It bore all the hallmarks of someone who may have done this type of thing before. "Very few people could carry out such an attack without ever having committed an offence like this before. "We are interested in talking to him about the three girls and perhaps even a few other cases from the 1980s." Prison sources describe Murphy as a loner who avoids eye contact with staff and fellow prisoners. One source said: "He seems to be always one step ahead of everyone. "If there's trouble he's moved on somewhere else and can never be connected with it. "He is very bad at making eye contact, especially with the staff." Murphy pleaded guilty last month to false imprisonment, assault, two charges of rape, two charges of Section 4 rape, attempted murder and assault causing harm. Yesterday, dressed in a red fleece jacket and blue jeans, he was led into court number two in Dublin's Criminal Court. He was facing sentencing for what Justice Paul Carney described as one of the worst cases to come before his court. The court heard that in February 2000 Murphy abducted a young woman from a car park in Co Carlow and forced her into the boot of his car. From there he drove her to a remote dirt track where he forced her to have oral sex with him then raped her. Following the attack he dressed her, put her back into the boot and drove her 14 miles to a forest where he subjected her to anal rape. He was eventually disturbed by two hunters after telling her she would never see her family again. Murphy's victim was in the Criminal Court yesterday but refused to give evidence. Inspector Patrick Mangan told the court that on February 11, 2000 the victim had left work with her day's takings and walked to her car which was parked in Bagnalstown, Carlow. As she approached the vehicle she noticed Murphy standing there. He walked up to her and demanded the money. But she refused so he punched her in the face, breaking her nose. The victim fell backwards into the car and Murphy caught her by the throat. He pushed her into the passenger seat where he forced her to remove her bra and her boots. And then he tied her hands with the bra and placed a gag over her mouth. He then transferred her to the boot of his Fiat Punto which was also in the car park. The court heard that Murphy drove eight miles with his terrified victim in the boot with music blaring. Inspector Mangan said: "After that first journey he brought her to an area known as Eatonstown. "It is about five miles from Carlow town and a very remote area at the top of a narrow road. "The scene was about half-a-mile up a dirt track which is an access route to farmland. It's an area where there are very few dwellings." Once the car stopped the woman was taken out of the boot and Murphy forced her into the driver's seat where he undressed her and forced her to perform oral sex on him. Then he raped her. After the attack he dressed his terrified victim and tied her hands so tightly that her fingers turned blue. He put her back into the boot and started the car again. His second journey took him 14 miles from the first scene and 23 miles from Carlow town to a remote woodland in West Wicklow. Inspector Mangan said: "Again this was not a densely populated area. It is mostly forested." Murphy took his victim out of the boot again and this time put her in the passenger seat. Then he made her remove her clothing, undressed himself and forced her to have anal sex with him. Senior counsel George Bermingham said: "At this point he was very aggressive. "He spoke of the fact that she wouldn't be seeing her family again. She feared for her life." Once he had finished attacking her he tied her hands together again and gagged her with her bra and put her back into the boot. The terrified woman managed to find an aerosol can in the boot and tried to spray it at Murphy's eyes when he opened it again. Mr Bermingham added: "This only resulted in him pushing her further into the boot. "After a few minutes he returned and placed a plastic bag over her head. "He kept it to her face but she managed to get her legs out of the car. "She was conscious of the fact that the lights of a vehicle were coming into view. "She got out of the boot yet still had the plastic bag over her head. She felt weak, semi-conscious." The vehicle belonged to two local men who were out mapping foxes. Murphy fled but the two men took the woman to the Garda station. They were able to identify Murphy who was arrested the following morning at his home. During questioning he made a statement to Gardai which was read out to the court yesterday. In it he admitted that he raped her on the first occasion but said he did not know why. After that he said he meant to leave her home but didn't. He said: "When I stopped the car the second time I took her out and sat her in the car. "She started talking to me. I told her I had two kids and she said she would like to have kids herself some day. "She asked me to take her home and said she would do anything I wanted if I took her home. "I told her I would leave her home. So she told me she would make love to me. "I had sex with her but that was her own choice. We made love in the car. "I didn't try to kill her at all. I had sex in two places with her but the second time was her own choice. "When the police came I said to my wife Margaret, 'I raped a girl last night'." Justice Carney said the case was one of the worst he had heard but he had to recognise that Murphy had pleaded guilty, co-operated with Gardai and had no previous convictions. He jailed him for 15 years and refused leave to appeal. Murphy became a suspect for the disappearances of Jo Jo, Annie and Deirdre after he was arrested last year for the rape. Student Annie went missing in the Dublin mountains in March 1993 after a night out in Dublin. Despite one of the most extensive missing persons investigations in the history of the state, no trace of her was ever found. Waitress Jo Jo Dullard dis- appeared in November 1995 from outside a telephone box in Moone, Co Kildare. She was hitching home from Dublin after missing the last bus of the night. She phoned her best friend but hung up saying a lift had arrived. She was never seen again. Student Deirdre Jacob disappeared without trace from outside her home in Newbridge, Co Kildare, in July 1998. She was last picked up on a security video camera at a bank in the town just minutes before she disappeared. |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60391474.html New clue in search for missing Deirdre.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: February 13, 1999 More results for: Deirdre Jacob GARDAI may have found a vital clue in the disappearance of teenager Deirdre Jacob. A motorist has reported seeing a person in the missing girl's driveway minutes before the last confirmed sighting. The woman told officers that she saw 18-year-old Deirdre trying to cross the road to her house at 3.02pm last July 28. A Garda source revealed: "The woman is not 100 per cent sure but she has told us that she thinks she saw someone from the corner of her eye standing on the opposite side of the road to Deirdre. "The whole disappearance is baffling because it happened in broad daylight. "We literally have been able to trace Deirdre through town where she made her bank transactions and back along the road towards her house. "We have her to the spot directly opposite her house where she went to cross the road. The rest is a complete mystery." The source said that as Deirdre stood trying to cross the road, there was a sudden torrential downpour which could jog people's memories. "It had been a very sunny day and all of a sudden there was this downpour. We are hoping that this may help more people remember seeing something around the time." Deirdre, a student teacher from Newbridge in Co Kildare, vanished between 3.00 and 4pm in the busy town. Her case is one of six missing people being investigated by a special team of detectives in Operation Trace. |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60662534.html THE TRIANGLE WHERE YOUNG WOMEN VANISH; Is mystery serial killer on the loose?(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: August 6, 1998 Author: Kelleher, Lynne More results for: Deirdre Jacob A DREADED triangle of doom where three girls have vanished could be the hunting ground of a serial killer. The disappearances have left detectives baffled and no clues have ever turned up. Now their case files are being studied to see if the fate of the three women has a common link. Trainee teacher Deirdre Jacob is the latest young woman to disappear within a 30-mile radius. The bizarre fate of the missing women has become one of the country's greatest unsolved mysteries. And in the cases of student Jo Jo Dollard and pregnant model Fiona Pender they have never been seen again. A senior garda in charge of the investigation into Deirdre's disappearance said he would be looking into the files of the other women. "We're certainly going to look at the files of Jo Jo Dollard and other people who have gone missing from this area. "She disappeared from Moone and Deirdre went missing from Newbridge, which is only 30 miles away. "We will be going down all avenues in an attempt to find Deirdre Jacob." The 18-year-old student from Roseberry, Co Kildare, hasn't been seen since she visited the Allied Irish Bank in Newbridge last Tuesday. Gardai did a reconstruction of her last known movements in a bid to find a vital clue to her whereabouts. Mystery They say her disappearance in the middle of the afternoon is a mystery and are privately worried that she may have been abducted. In each case in the triangle the young women went missing without trace. They brought no clothes with them and there was no sign of any preparation to leave home. Jo Jo Dollard disappeared in November 1995 around 20 miles from Newbridge and is presumed dead. The 21-year-old waitress from Callan in Kilkenny was hitch-hiking home after having a drink in Naas. She called a friend from a phone box in Moone late at night and said she would be home soon. That is the last time anyone was in contact with her. Jo Jo's sister, Mary Phelan, believes her body is somewhere near where she made that last call but despite numerous searches she has never been found. Vanished Attractive mum-to-be Fiona Pender disappeared almost two years ago just 30 miles from the spot where Deirdre Jacob vanished. There have been no developments in the baffling case despite a massive investigation and searches in the area. The pregnant model, who was working as a hairdresser, had set up home in a small flat in the centre of Tullamore with boyfriend John Thomson. On August 23, 1996, John left the flat at 6.30am to work on his father's farm at Killeigh, 10 miles away. That was the last confirmed sighting of Fiona. It is believed that she may have left the flat some time that day wearing a navy T-shirt, white leggings, blue and white trainers and a pink jacket. John made an emotional public plea for his lover to return but eventually gave up hope and moved back to his home in Killeigh. Farms and forests near Fiona's home have since been searched and canals, rivers and lakes dredged but her body has never been recovered. |

Please find my lost girl; Father's plea for missing student, 18.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: August 1, 1998 Author: Duff, Gavin More results for: Deirdre Jacob THE desperate father of missing teenager Deirdre Jacob last night pleaded: "Please help me find my girl." The 18-year-old trainee teacher mysteriously vanished last Tuesday after cashing a cheque in the AIB bank at Newbridge, County Kildare. Both the Gardai and her family say her disappearance is totally out of character and there are now serious fears for her safety. A large force of officers and local people spent yesterday searching for her, but found no clues. Divers were also drafted in to help. Detectives were privately worried Deirdre may have been abducted. The teenager lives only 30 miles from Moone, also in County Kildare - the village where Jo Jo Dullard made her last phone call before she disappeared two years ago. Jo Jo was trying to hitchhike home to Callan, County Kilkenny, after going for a drink in a pub in Naas. She has never been heard of since and yesterday Crimestoppers put up a pounds 50,000 to solve her disappearance plus other unsolved crimes in Ireland. A Garda source said; "We are treating her disappearance very seriously. She's either had an accident or somebody has abducted her. "She is not the type of girl to just vanish willingly." Dad Michael said: "We are very concerned. If anybody has any information please come forward and help us. "We want our girl back. Somebody out there must know where she is. We are absolutely heartbroken." Deirdre's mother Bernadette said that her daughter was not the type to go off on her own. Locals described Deirdre as a "very happy girl" who was unlikely to want to run away, with lots of friends and a boyfriend in England. The teenager was studying in England at St Mary's Teacher Training College in Twickenham. The last reported sightings of Deirdre were late on Tuesday afternoon. At around 3.30pm a witness spotted her 350 yards from her home, beside an AIB Bank in Newbridge. She was seen on cameras cashing a cheque for pounds 280 sterling. Later, he was spotted at a post office and then on three occasions on the nearby Clongorey Road between 3.30pm and 4pm. http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60661980.html |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60511073.html Mountain Search For Missing Deirdre.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: January 26, 1999 More results for: Deirdre Jacob GARDAI investigating the disappearance of missing schoolgirl Deirdre Jacob carried out a mountain search after a tip-off that her body may have been dumped there, it has been revealed Army officers were called in to assist Gardai in the sweep of woodlands and fields in West Wicklow. The search was ordered after a caller said he had seen a motorist acting suspiciously in the area around the time the Kildare girl disappeared. But the probe was called off after two days when the remote area had been thoroughly searched. The news comes as another blow to the parents of the missing 18 year old. A source close to the investigation said last night that Gardai are now convinced that the teenager has been murdered. "Just because this search didn't unearth anything doesn't matter. "We are glad to hear from anyone who thinks they may have seen anything even remotely suspicious." |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-60615098.html HUNT FOR DRIVER WHO SAW MISSING DEIRDRE; Witness phones distraught family.(News) From: The Mirror (London, England) Date: November 25, 1998 Author: Johnston, Jason More results for: Deirdre Jacob POLICE on both sides of the border are desperate to talk to a lorry driver who claims he had information about missing teenager Deirdre Jacobs. The man has phoned her distraught family family eight times to say he has information about her. On one occasion, the line went dead after he said just a few words - but police believe he can help their investigation. It's understood the lorry driver, who may be married with children and lives in the Fermanagh area, claims he gave the 18-year-old student teacher from Co Kildare a lift from Maynooth to Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, on July 28, the day she disappeared Detective Sergeant John McElligott, who is leading the investigation into Deirdre's disappearance, said: "Anybody who has spoken to him would feel that he is genuine. "I would implore him, as a father himself, to come forward to help us because he must know the difficulty he is causing for the Jacob family. "We have spoken to hundreds of people about this investigation so this man should have no concern." In some of the conversations, the man said Deirdre had seemed to be "under pressure". He described her accurately and said they stopped off in Ardee before he brought her on to Carrickmacross. In another conversation he told how the pretty teenager had said she was trying to escape from "a man from England". The man first spoke out about Deirdre on a local radio programme, although he has refused to give his name. Deirdre's parents have been travelling from their Newbridge home to Fermanagh and Tyrone for the last five weeks to hand out leaflets appealing for information. They believe she may be suffering from loss of memory. Her father Michael said: "While you're driving you look around at the countryside and think: 'What's the point.' "But then you pick yourself up and be positive because we know that Deirdre is out there." |

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-5227580.html Missing student 'may have been victim of Irish serial killer' From: Evening Standard - London Date: January 8, 1999 Author: Mark Nicol More results for: Deirdre Jacob THE CASE of a missing student from St Mary's College, Twickenham, is being linked to a suspected serial killer thought to be behind the disappearances of five women in Ireland. Eighteen-year-old Deirdre Jacob, a student teacher, left the south-west London suburb after the summer term last year enthusiastic about her studies. But her disappearance in Ireland some weeks later, only 300 yards from her family home, prompted an investigation by Garda officers and the Metropolitan Police which, six months later, has failed to unearth a single clue. The police have questioned St Mary's College students, and her friends in London but all claimed to have no knowledge of her movements. Miss Jacob's case mirrors those of five Irish girls suspected of being raped, murdered then buried in the Wicklow mountains, south of Dublin, since 1993. Numerous attempts to find a new lead in the investigations have all failed. Last July Miss Jacob visited her grandmother's shop and the Allied Irish Bank in New-bridge, County Kildare, a mile from her home. She has not been seen since leaving the bank. Garda officer Inspector Sean Lavin said: "It is an absolutely remarkable case. To investigate for this long and not find any leads, such as a piece of clothing, or to hear that she has contacted a friend, is incredible. "The only common link between the case of Deirdre and the other five missing women is that they are all young girls, aged 17 to 26, who went missing in roughly the same area. "Investigations are continuing and we are keeping an open mind. Deirdre was a matter of yards from her own home, and she disappeared on a summer afternoon." Deirdre's father , Michael Jacob, said: "Deirdre was very happy in London and her friends there in Twickenham, who are amazed as we are about all this, have been very helpful with the investigation." |

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13...n-vanished.html Rapist worked in shop owned by family of Newbridge teen who vanished By Valerie Hanley and Karen Rice Last updated at 2:14 AM on 15th August 2010 Comments (4) Add to My Stories At large: Larry Murphy leaving Arbour Hill jail on Thursday The Irish Mail on Sunday can today reveal sensational evidence linking freed rapist Larry Murphy to college student Deirdre Jacob, who disappeared in July 1998. This paper has learned that Murphy – long suspected of being behind the disappearance of at least three young women – was doing work for Deirdre’s grandmother in her sweetshop at the time the 18-year-old vanished from Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Garda sources have revealed Murphy was carrying out carpentry work at the shop, which Deirdre visited just hours before she went missing. The revelations will add fuel to the calls for better monitoring of Murphy following his release from jail for rape. The MoS has also learned that Murphy was very familiar with the area where Deirdre lived and disappeared. He once worked at a stables just half a mile from Deirdre’s home, and visited Newbridge again in the weeks before the trainee teacher’s disappearance to view a potential carpentry job at a local pub. Murphy also returned to the Co. Kildare town two months after Deirdre went missing to carry out the work at the pub. The links to Deirdre will add weight to the clamour for a law change which would allow gardaí to monitor Murphy much more closely in the wake of his release last week, having served 10 years of his 15-year rape sentence. While the prospect of a convicted rapist on the loose is alarming enough, many people – including serving and former gardaí – believe Murphy may represent a far greater danger. One officer involved in his rape case and the Jacob investigation said yesterday: ‘It requires a certain type of callous person to do what he did. He refused to take part in any treatment in prison and he will probably re-offend.’ Trainee teacher Deirdre was one of three women who went missing in the area before Murphy was convicted in 2000 of the abduction, rape and attempted murder of a woman in the Wicklow Mountains. The 18-year-old was last seen as she walked towards the gateway of her Newbridge home on the afternoon of July 28, 1998. Earlier that day, she had visited her grandmother, Bridget Grady, at the shop she ran for many years in the heart of Newbridge. Deirdre dropped in on the elderly lady before and after going to the local bank and post office. She then left the shop to walk home. It is about a 25-minute walk from the town centre to the bungalow Deirdre shared with her parents, Michael and Bernie, and her sister Ciara. Student: Deirdre Jacob was last seen near her home Her family home on the outskirts of Newbridge is concealed by tall trees and it has been established that Deirdre never made it to the front door. At the time, nothing pointed to Murphy as a suspect; it was another two years before he was arrested after two hunters interrupted him as he tried to kill the woman he had abducted and raped. Deirdre’s family discovered the link between them and Ireland’s most notorious sex offender only after Deirdre’s grandmother died. The 94-year-old died in December 1999 and it was as the family went through her possessions that they discovered Murphy’s name on a cheque stub. A senior garda involved in the investigation into the disappearance told the MoS: ‘Deirdre’s grandmother had a shop on Newbridge main street and after she died, when the family was going through her things, they found a chequebook stub with Murphy’s name on it. He did carpentry work for her but the family knew nothing about it. The grandmother hadn’t told them and the first they knew was when they found the receipt for the work at the shop.’ The Garda source said that in his view, the stub added weight to the belief that Murphy was involved in Deirdre’s disappearance. ‘No-one has gone missing since Murphy was jailed,’ he said. ‘It all points to him.’ Gardaí visited Murphy at Arbour Hill prison and questioned him twice about Deirdre. However, he refused to co-operate – or even try to clear his name by giving an alibi for the day in question. The Garda source said Murphy had other links to the area. ‘Two years before Deirdre went missing, Larry Murphy did some work at a stables about half a mile from her home. And he was in Newbridge before she went missing viewing work at a local pub but he didn’t start that work until September.’ Between March 1993 and July 1998, two other women went missing in Leinster. They were American student Annie McCarrick, 26, and Jo Jo Dullard, 21. An only child, Annie had left her home in New York to study in Dublin and she went missing in March 1993 while on a trip to Johnny Fox’s pub in the mountains. Two years later, on the night of November 9, 1995, 21-year-old Jo Jo disappeared after making a phone call at a public phone box in Moone, Co. Kildare. She had missed a bus and was hitching a lift home to Callan, Co. Kilkenny, when she went missing. Gardaí have carried out extensive investigations into the disappearances but so far have had no breakthrough in solving them. Two years ago, the Garda brought a team of FBI agents to Ireland to review the evidence they had accumulated. These experienced profilers, who specialise in investigating serial killers in the United States, concluded that the unknown killers matched the Murphy profile. The rapist was released from Arbour Hill on Thursday and was met by a public and media frenzy. On Friday, he took the train to Cork, returning to Dublin later in the day. It is not known where he is staying. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13...l#ixzz0wt9p0IRf |

ClearMyRecord.com The suspected serial killer Larry Murphy is planning his imminent escape from the constant hounding since his release from prison last Thursday, gardai believe. In his three days of freedom, the convicted rapist has sparked huge public anxiety including protests outside a hotel and a hostel for homeless men, where he was wrongly rumoured to have been staying. Garda sources said he has complained twice about media harassment, first in Coolock and later at Kevin Street garda station on Friday evening after he fled a waiting media scrum at Heuston Station after returning from a trip to Cork. Murphy, 45, travelled to Cork by train on Friday morning, having spent his first night of freedom in Dublin. It is believed that he was visiting a former inmate at Arbour Hill who had reportedly visited him during his final days in prison. He was recognised soon after he arrived and returned to Dublin three hours later. The National Surveillance Unit has placed a full-time team to work monitoring Murphy since his release. At least seven plain clothes detectives accompanied him to Heuston Station while at least four travelled with him on the train. Sources said he is now planning to leave the country, funding his exile with a small prison allowance during 10 years in jail. He was also entitled to some of the proceeds of the Baltinglass house that was later sold by his wife. His wife, Margaret, has cut off all contact with him since his conviction for the rape and attempted abduction in 2000. He also has a full driving licence and a passport Read more: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/loc...l#ixzz0wtBdGi5W |
