http://stgeorge.yourguide.com.au/news/loca...ng/1229318.aspx Watching, waiting and hoping BY LAURA SPERANZA 30/07/2008 4:00:00 AM THE heartache and sense of loss can be too much for the friends and family of missing people. Arncliffe Uniting Church members have devoted the past 10 years to comforting people with missing loved ones. The congregation runs an annual memorial service for missing people, traditionally held on the first day of National Missing Person's Week, which is August 3-9 and focuses on youth this year. Organiser Mable Mordue said the service was a small step towards healing the hurt of families and friends left behind with many unanswered questions. "We give the families an opportunity to meet each other and talk to each other,'' Mrs Mordue said. "We realise how important it is for them to meet others in similar circumstances. Faye Leveson, mother of missing Matthew Leveson, 21, of Cronulla, said it was important to highlight how vulnerable teenagers and young adults could be in today's society. "Kids are trusting, and they often think they are bullet-proof, that nothing's going to happen to them,'' Mrs Leveson said. "They can come from the most loving families but they're not like an older people, who have more life experience, and can look at a situation and think about the consequences.'' Mrs Leveson's son disappeared on September 23, 2007, after a night out with friends at a Surry Hills nightclub. His car was found outside the public toilets at Waratah Park Reserve on Rawson Avenue, Sutherland, five days later. Police have told the Levesons they believe Matthew was murdered. "It's very hard to deal with and it doesn't get any easier. It just gets harder,'' Mrs Leveson said. "Not a day, not an hour, not a minute goes by that I think about where he is.'' A service will be held at Arncliffe Uniting Church, 29 Hannam Street, Bardwell Valley, at 2.15pm on Sunday. Lunch is at 1.15pm. |

Reward offered for missing Matthew Email Printer friendly version Normal font Large font Arjun Ramachandran November 1, 2007 - 12:05PM Missing ... Matthew Leveson. Advertisement A distraught Sydney family has made a heartfelt plea for any information about the disappearance of their "happy-go-lucky" son, who may have been the victim of a gay hate crime. Matthew Leveson, 20, was last seen in Cronulla on September 23, and was reported missing two days later after he failed to turn up at work at a Hurstville call centre and could not be contacted. His car, a Toyota Seca, was found on September 27 by police at Waratah Oval, Sutherland, a short distance from his home. Police have offered a $1000 reward in connection with Mr Leveson's disappearance. "It's baffling ... it's a complete mystery," his father Mark Leveson said. "He's a happy-go-lucky guy who liked going out to party and had a good circle of friends." His mother, Faye Leveson, was distraught as she appealed for information from the public. "I want my son back," she said. "He's a beautiful boy, he wouldn't harm a fly, he's got lovely friends. "I just want to know something. Please come to the police." Mr Leveson's friends have also appealed for assistance through the social networking sites Facebook and MySpace. Miranda police have not found any evidence to suggest Mr Leveson is still alive and have not ruled out the possibility his disappearance may be linked to a gay hate crime. He was with a large group of friends at a popular gay nightspot on the day he was last seen. Detective Inspector Adam Barwick said the investigation was being treated as homicide. "We certainly hold grave concerns for Matthew," he said. "We believe his disappearance is a result of foul play." The circumstances of Mr Leveson's disappearance were highly unusual, he said. "We don't believe he chose to go missing,'' he said. "It's possible people are talking amongst themselves as to what happened or what they believed has happened and that's why we would like them to come forward to police. "We have been following some lines of inquiry but it has now been almost six weeks since Matthew was last seen. "He was known to have a large circle of friends and I believe someone in the local community knows what has occurred." Mr Levenson's family last saw him at a 21st party in Wollongong on September 7, but his brother Peter saw him two weeks later at a popular gay nightspot. He was with a large group of friends before leaving the ARQ nightclub in Surry Hills in the early hours of Sunday, September 23. Police said Mr Leveson's partner last saw him later that day in Cronulla. Mr Leveson is described as being 170 to 180 centimetres tall, white or European in appearance with a thin build and short blonde hair. He was last seen wearing light brown cargo shorts, a black singlet and white leather shoes. Any information can be given to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or Miranda police station on 9541 3899. A reward of up to $1000 is payable for information which leads to an arrest. - with AAP http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/reward...3619021944.html |

http://www.dnamagazine.com.au/articles/new...id=3578&c=30569 The Faces Of The Disappeared Simon Knight, missing since 2005 Date: 17-Oct-2007 Sydney police are trying to piece together the last hours of Cronulla man Matthew Leveson, who went missing on his way home from Arq nightclub om September 23 and is presumed dead. Leveson's abandoned car was found outside the public toilets at Waratah Park Reserve on Rawson Avenue, Sutherland (in the far south of Sydney) on Thursday, September 27. Detectives believe the car was driven to the reserve between September 23 and 24, but evidence suggests that Leveson did not park the car there himself. When he went missing, Matthew was wearing a black singlet and khaki cargo pants. He was leaving Arq, in Taylor Square, towards dawn on Sunday September 23 and is 5'7" with an athletic build and bleached blond hair. If you have any information on Matthew please contact Melissa Cooper at Sutherland Police Station on 02 9541 3899. Matthew's disappearance may remind some of Simon Knight, also from Sydney, who was last seen in Surry Hills on July 20, 2005. Simon had his silver Gary Fisher bike with him at the time of his disappearance and his bank account has remained untouched since that day. Knight was openly gay and suffered from depression, and had gone missing for a short period on one occasion previously. Simon is six feet tall with a solid build. He has ginger hair and would be 34. A good friend and former flatmate of Simon is Sydney playwright Lachlan Philpott, whose current work, Colder, is an abstraction of his feelings about Simon's disappearance. "Colder tells the story of a increasingly isolated guy who eventually goes missing, and in that sense it's a response to Simon going missing," Lachlan told DNA. "More so, though, it's about that paradox in the gay community where we spend a lot of time staring at people but if someone disappears, whether they walk on by, leave the bar of actually become a Missing Person, we seem to lose interest in them really quickly." Lachlan was nominated for the Griffin Award for Colder which may be produced in Melbourne next year by the Red Stitch Theatre Company. http://www.queerty.com/category/matthew-leveson/ Matthew Leveson Search Continues For Missing Gay Man Australian national Matthew Leveson hasn’t been seen since September 23rd, but his family isn’t giving up hope that he’ll return safe and sound. Leveson’s mother continues to implore the public to send in tips on what could have happened to her 20-year old son: “I want my son back. He’s a beautiful boy, he wouldn’t harm a fly, he’s got lovely friends. I just want to know something.” Leveson’s family’s been in anguish since he went missing in September. His brother was the last member to see him, when they ran into each other at a ARQ nightclub, a popular club in Sydney. Leveson’s boyfriend saw him later that night, but hasn’t heard a peep since. … Police found Leveson’s empty car four days later. Though they have no clues one way or another, authorities fear Leveson may have met a homophobic end. Said one detective, “We certainly hold grave concerns for Matthew. We believe his disappearance is a result of foul play.” Let’s hope that’s not the case. |

Matthew Leveson was last seen on September 23 Homicide investigation BY LAURA SPERANZA 7/11/2007 11:00:00 PM THE distraught parents of missing Cronulla man Matthew Leveson say their hearts are broken because they know their son is dead. Mark and Faye Leveson said they had come to the painful realisation that their beloved son, 20, was murdered shortly after he disappeared early on September 23. Miranda police said they believed Matthew met with foul play that morning and have begun a homicide investigation. Mrs Leveson said Matthew, who attended Inaburra School at Bangor, was ``just a great kid'' and a wonderful brother to Peter, 22, and Jason, 17. ``I just want him to walk through the door,'' a tearful Mrs Leveson said. A little bit of hope fades with every day that Matthew is missing and his 21st birthday on December 12 draws closer, Mrs Leveson said. ``He just loved life,'' she said. ``If you knew him, you would love him too.'' Brother Peter was the last person to see Matthew at the ARQ Sydney nightclub in Flinders Street, Surry Hills about 3am on September 23. The two brothers crossed paths by chance as they were both heading home from a night out at the clubs. Miranda local area command crime manager Adam Barwick said police did not know whether Matthew made it home safely to his Cronulla apartment. Inspector Barwick said detectives were trying to trace Matthew's last footsteps, including how his car came to be parked outside the public toilets at Waratah Park Reserve on Rawson Avenue, Sutherland a popular meeting place for gay men. The Levesons believe Matthew's attacker dumped his car at the park to throw investigators off the trail. Mark Leveson said his son was openly gay but it was not a place he would ever go to. ``Not a chance,'' he said. ``That's not his style.'' Mr Leveson said his son did not keep any secrets from his family and had told them he was gay four years ago. ``It didn't come as a surprise to us,'' Mr Leveson said. ``We were very supportive.'' The Levesons last saw Matthew at a party on September 7. ``He gave me a big bear hug and told me he loved me,'' Mrs Leveson said. They said he was excited about life and enjoying his job at a Hurstville call centre. Miranda police: 95413899. http://stgeorge.yourguide.com.au/news/loca...ion/368556.aspx |

Advertisement A YOUNG gay man who vanished after partying at one of Sydney's trendiest inner-city dance clubs is feared murdered, his friends believe. Matt Leveson, 20, has not been seen since walking out of ARQ in Taylor Square, early on Sunday, September 23. The wildlife welfare officer, a regular at the club, was thought to be going home to Cronulla. His family reported him missing when he failed to show for work the following Tuesday. He had also stopped answering his phone. Two days later Mr Leveson's green 1999 Corolla hatchback was found dumped outside a public toilet at Waratah Park Reserve, Sutherland. Police said evidence suggested he did not park it there. They believe he "met with foul play". Miranda Local Area Command Crime Manager Adam Barwick said police were appealing to anyone who might have seen the vehicle or noticed anyone near or with it on September 27 to come forward. Mr Leveson's older brother, Pete, said his family was unable to speak publicly, but was satisfied police were doing everything possible. Close mate Steve Lowe, 23, said friends were struggling to come to terms with his disappearance. "I've heard the stories about him being murdered, but I can't believe the police have got it right," he said. "I just can't think of anyone who would want to take Matt's life." Murder fears: where is our beautiful boy?Article from: Font size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment By Justin Vallejo November 02, 2007 12:00am THE family of missing Sydney man Matthew Leveson made an emotional plea yesterday for information about his mysterious disappearance so they could bring their "beautiful boy" home. But without any evidence he is still alive, police believe they are searching for a body rather than a happy ending. Mr Leveson, 20, went missing from Cronulla on Sunday, September 23, after a night of partying at a gay nightspot in Taylor Square. Investigators have not ruled out that he was the victim of a gay-hate crime. "I want my son back. He's a beautiful boy, he wouldn't harm a fly," mother Faye Leveson said, breaking down in tears yesterday. "Please, if you heard something that night, that morning, please come to the police and tell them." Detective Inspector Adam Barwick wouldn't comment on whether Mr Leveson's sexuality was a factor in the disappearance. "We believe that his disappearance is a result of foul play," he said. "The circumstances regarding his disappearance are certainly very unusual. Since that time we haven't uncovered any evidence to suggest that Matthew is still alive. We've been treating it as a homicide. "If the public are aware of anything that occurred at the nightclub we're very keen to hear from them." The call centre worker had spent the night before he went missing at Arq Nightclub on Flinders St, Surry Hills, until the early hours of Sunday morning, where he bumped into his older brother Peter. After leaving the club he went to Cronulla, where he was last seen alive by his partner Jason. It is not known what happened between the Sunday he went missing and when his green Toyota Seca was found at Waratah Oval, Sutherland, on Thursday, September 27, just a short distance from his home. Peter Leveson said his brother didn't seem to have a worry in the world at Arq nightclub. "He was happy, dancing around the place as he does, that's him. He just loved to dance," he said. "He was with his friends and they are really lovely people. There was nothing out of the norm at all. "Please come home, we really miss you, it's tearing us apart." The happy-go-lucky party boy had finally "landed on his feet" in his new job at a call centre and wasn't acting like someone who planned to disappear, his father Mark Leveson said. "It's baffling. He was looking at term deposits for new investments and buying a new car, which are not the things that a person who planned to go missing would do," he said. Police are offering a $1000 reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest. http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/stor...5006009,00.html |

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/11/01/2078393.htm Missing 20yo feared murdered Posted Thu Nov 1, 2007 11:18am AEDT Updated Thu Nov 1, 2007 11:48am AEDT Map: Sydney 2000 Police fear a young man who disappeared from Sydney's south six weeks ago has been murdered. Twenty-year-old Matthew Leveson was last seen by his partner at their apartment in the Cronulla area in late September. The alarm was raised when Mr Leveson did not show up for work. His car was later found at a nearby oval. Mr Leveson had earlier been at The Arq nightclub at Surry Hills, in inner Sydney. Detective Inspector Adam Barwick believes someone in the local community knows what has happened to him. "The circumstances regarding his disappearance certainly are very unusual," he said. "Since that time, we haven't uncovered any evidence to suggest that Matthew is still alive since that date of the 23rd of September. "Since early on in the investigation, we've been treating it as a homicide investigation." Mr Leveson's parents say they are baffled by their son's disappearance. His father Mark Leveson says his son has a "happy-go-lucky" personality and his disappearance is totally out of character. "He was looking on his work computer on the day before he went missing," he said. "He was looking at term deposits for investments. He was looking at buying a new car, which is not the [sort of] things a person who's missing or planning to go missing would do." Reward offer to find missing Sydney man Believed murdered ... Matthew Leveson. Source: Supplied POLICE have announced a $100,000 reward for information into the 2007 disappearance of Matthew Leveson, who they believe was murdered. Matthew Leveson, 20, was last seen leaving a Sydney nightclub in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills on September 23, 2007 about 2am. He left with his then boyfriend Michael Peter Atkins. Since his disappearance more than four years ago Matthew's father Mark Leveson has spent countless nights searching for the body of his son under a full moon, which he believes would have been the light available to the killer as he attempts to retrace their steps. Mr Leveson says he believes his son's remains may be lying somewhere in Sydney's Royal National Park. "There is nothing definite to say his body is even there," Mr Leveson said. "But we've got to start somewhere," Mr Leveson, told the Sydney Morning Herald. Matthew Leveson was reported missing by family on September 25 when he failed to arrive at work and could not be contacted. His last known contact was a text message to a friend at 3.30am on the day he was last seen alive. the message read: "He needs to f...en get over himself," and was referring to Mr Atkins. Police found his abandoned car two days later on September 27 at Waratah Oval, Sutherland. Despite an extensive investigation police have never found Mr Leveson's body or determined the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, which was considered out of character. In 2008 Atkins was charged with his murder but was acquitted by a jury and sentenced for the lesser charge of manslaughter. Mr Leveson is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175cm tall, of thin build, and with short blond hair. He was last seen wearing light-brown cargo shorts, a black singlet and white leather shoes. Read more: http://www.news.com.au/national/k-reward-o...4#ixzz1njNTzcBx |

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/842686...on-with-tattoos Family memorialises murdered son with tattoos 12:30 AEDT Tue Feb 28 2012 The father and brother of a murdered Sydney man have revealed a series of tattoos on their bodies as they continue to search for his remains. Cronulla man Matthew Leveson, 20, was killed sometime in September 2007, though his body has never been found. In memory his father Mark has had a series of tattoos inked across his arms as he tries to find closure. "Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal", a tattoo on his right forearm reads while "Love leaves a memory that no one can steal" is inked across his left. On one of his upper arms is a tattoo of Matthew's face and on the other an image of Charles Bronson in the vigilante film Death Wish with the words "Fiat justitia" which means "let justice be done". Matthew's brother also has a tattoo across his shoulder memorialising him. Police today renewed their appeal for information about the disappearance and the NSW Government has offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the discovery of Matthew's body. His mother Faye told Nine News that being unable to find her son's remains was "hell". "I want to be able to put this to rest, put Matty to rest," she said. "All any of us want is to be able to bring him home, and lay him to rest like anyone deserves." Now Mr Leveson searches Sydney's Royal National Park on nights with a full moon in the hopes of finding his son. He said he hoped seeing what the killer saw that night might give him a clue to Matthew's resting place. Matthew was reported missing by his family on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, after he failed to arrive at work and could not be contacted. He was last seen leaving ARQ nightclub at Surry Hills about 2am on the Sunday two days before with boyfriend Michael Peter Atkins. Police found Matthew's car at Waratah Oval, on the edge of the Royal National Park, on September 27. In the car was a large garden mattock and heavy duty cloth tape along with a receipt from Bunnings Warehouse indicating they were bought about nine hours after Matthew left the nightclub. Atkins was charged with murder and manslaughter but was found not guilty. |

"We know Matt's dead, there's no doubt about that at all," his father, Mark Leveson, says. "We want to know why he was killed, where he was killed, when he was killed. "This has been a living nightmare for over four years for our family." His mother, Faye, says she thinks about her missing son all the time. "We have got no idea if he suffered, how did he die, is he intact?" she says. "Those questions go through your head every day, every waking moment." Mr Leveson, from Cronulla in Sydney's south, was reported missing on September 25, 2007, after he failed to arrive at work and could not be contacted. Mr Leveson's body has never been found and the NSW government is now putting up a $100,000 reward for information leading to its discovery. "Today is about getting some more information from anybody that may not have contacted police in the past," Detective Inspector Rohan Cramsie said. "This is an opportunity for a reward offered by the government to come forward to help us in this investigation that is ongoing." Mr Leveson said the family was desperate to find the body, even though it would not bring them closure. "Closure for us is Matt knocking on our front door saying 'sorry I didn't call', nothing less," he said. "We want justice." He was last seen wearing light-brown cargo shorts, a black singlet and white leather shoes. http://wentworth-courier.whereilive.com.au...atthew-leveson/ $100,000 reward to help solve suspected murder of Matthew Leveson * Crime 28 Feb 12 @ 09:11am The state government has announced a $100,000 reward to help solve the suspected murder of Matthew Leveson. The state government has announced a $100,000 reward to help solve the suspected murder of Matthew Leveson. NSW Police are renewing their appeal for information into the 2007 disappearance, and believed murder, of a 20-year-old Sydney man. Matthew Leveson, from Cronulla in Sydney’s south, was reported missing on Tuesday September 25, 2007 by concerned relatives after he failed to arrive at his work and could not be contacted. He was last seen leaving ARQ nightclub at Darlinghurst about 2am on Sunday, September 23. Police then found his abandoned car on Thursday, September 27, at Waratah Oval, Sutherland. Detectives from Miranda Local Area Command were notified and launched an investigation into his disappearance, which was considered suspicious almost immediately as it was completely out of character. Despite extensive searches, Matthew’s body has never been located. In 2008, Miranda Police charged his partner, Michael Atkins, with murder. However, he was acquitted at trial and the investigation continues. The renewed appeal comes as the NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Michael Gallacher, announces a $100,000 reward for information leading to the discovery of Matthew’s body. Detective Inspector Rohan Cramsie, Crime Manager of Miranda Local Area Command, said despite extensive investigations, police have so far been unable to determine what exactly happened to Matthew. “There is a person, or people, out there who knows what happened to Matt. We’re again appealing for them to come forward with information that will allow the Leveson family closure and the ability to bury their son,” Det-Insp Cramsie said. “There are a lot of unanswered questions, and, to this date investigating officers have been unable to determine what happened to Matthew. Hopefully this reward will give them the encouragement needed to come forward.” Matthew is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175cm tall, of thin build, and with short blond hair. He was last seen wearing light-brown cargo shorts, a black singlet and white leather shoes. Anyone with information that could help investigators is urged to contact Miranda Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. |

http://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/ne...b05639ad7ee42fa Royal National Park: Breakthrough in search for Matthew Leveson MAY 31, 20177:42PM Remains found in search for Matthew Leveson Megan Palin news.com.au THE parents of missing murder victim Matthew Leveson have been painstakingly scouring bushland for almost a decade in a bid to find their son’s remains. Faye and Mark — who’ve never given up hope of finding their son’s body after he went missing a decade ago — have returned to Mr Leveson’s potential burial site in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney, time and time again. Sometimes they’ve packed lunches and conducted independent searches, and other times like today, they’ve joined police and watched on as excavators dug up the earth in search of their son. Earlier today, the excavators were shut off on the site possibly for the last time, as search teams unearthed human remains suspected to be those of Mr Leveson. Faye and Mark were seen hugging and also embraced detectives on site. Sobs were heard as Mark comforted his wife, according to The Daily Telegraph. A police statement confirmed officers located about 3pm today what they believe to be human remains at the Royal National Park at Waterfall. “The human remains will be subject for an examination by a forensic pathologist and an anthropologist, which might be followed by further analysis, including DNA testing,” it said. Officers from Strike Force Bowditch — established in 2007 to investigate the disappearance of Mr Leveson — had been searching the area when the discovery was made. A NSW Police spokesman told news.com.au that forensic specialists were called to the area which has since been taped off and is now a crime scene. The Levesons were taken by NSW Police to an area of bushland behind two trees just off McKell Avenue in Waterfall. Investigators were originally led to the remote roadside site by Mr Leveson’s former boyfriend, Michael Atkins, who was acquitted of the younger man’s murder in 2009. On Sunday, Faye vowed to never give up until she found her son, in a post on her Facebook page. “The police are not giving up and either are we,” she wrote. “I am heart broken and devastated, but my love for my beautiful Matty keeps me going and if need be I will search for Matty till the day I die. “I promised Matty I will find him and I have every intention of keeping that promise. Love you Matty, now, always and forever, Mum.” Detective Chief Inspector Gary Jubelin has requested forensic officers to assist, a NSW State Crime Commander supervisor told reporters. “They have found items of interest,” she said. Wednesday is the eighth day in the latest search to find the 20-year-old’s remains at the site. Atkins took detectives to the potential burial site after he was offered immunity from prosecution for perjury and contempt of court. He had admitted to lying at an inquest into the suspected murder. The ongoing inquest into the death of Mr Leveson, who was last seen leaving Darlinghurst’s ARQ nightclub with Mr Atkins in 2007, is scheduled to resume in August. — With AAP |

May Matthew Rest in Peace ![]() http://www.outinperth.com/police-confirm-r...atthew-leveson/ Police confirm remains discovered in Sydney are Matthew Leveson 5 Jun 2017 | Filed under Featured | Posted by admin DNA testing has confirmed that the remains discovered in state forest in Sydney belong to missing man Matthew Leveson. His father, Mark Leveson, has told the ABC that items discovered at the crime scene had left no doubt that his family’s decade long search for his body had come to an end. “Things that were found at the crime scene gave the police and us no doubt at all that Matt was there,” Mark Leveson said. The discover of the missing 20 year-olds’ remains occurred just moments before police were preparing to conclude their search. Authorities have conducted three searches of the area in the last six months. Leveson last seen leaving Sydney’s Arc nightclub in 2007. Michael Atkins, Leveson’s boyfriend at the time of his disappearance, was acquitted of his murder and manslaughter following a trial in 2009. Last year an inquest into his presumed death was halted when Atkins allegedly admitted he had lied under oath. He agreed to show police where Leveson’s body was, in return for indemnity for prosecution. OIP Staff |
