Family Still Searching For Loved One

Local pizza delivery man Corey Lind was missing for less than a day before police began searching on land and in the air. And missing Illinois wife Stacy Peterson has drawn national attention. Cases that have a Springfield family wondering why no one has helped search for their missing loved one.

"No one will help, no one is looking," says Cheyenne Maisonet.
43 year old Toni Barrett went missing almost four months ago. She was was returning to North Carolina after a family visit, but never made it home. Her trip started as planned at the Peter Pan bus station in Springfield, but when she went to change buses at New York's Port Authority she was never heard from again.

"She is not just some random person," says her niece Cheyenne. "She is a sister, an aunt, and we love her."
"She wouldn't leave us," says her daughter Yelena Torres. "She wouldn't."

The family has searched tirelessly since her disappearance and even took a trip to New York to speak with the detectives in charge of the case. A conversation they caught on tape because they knew New York investigators wouldn't want to help.

"She has the right to ignore you," says a detective on the tape.
Detectives at Port Authority did not return our calls, and the family says they have done little to advance the case.
"It really hurts because he does not care," says Maisonet.
"It's not our job to be doing all of this, but we are never gonna give up," says Torres.

And as the holidays approach family members say they just want Toni home.

"She's still out there, and she needs to be brought home," says Maisonet. "Whether it's dead or alive, we still want her brought home."

MISSING: Woman Disappears

Story Published: Aug 28, 2007 at 7:21 PM EST

Watch The Story Forty-three year old Elizabeth Barrett moved to North Carolina about six months ago with her boyfriend. She disappeared after a visit to Springfield a week ago, and now her family here is contacting police up and down the East coast trying to figure out why she never made it home.

"I'm afraid that she's hurt, or worse," says niece Cheyenne Maisonet.

It's been seven days of worry for the Barrett family. Elizabeth Barrett, known as Toni, was visiting family in her hometown of Springfield. Last Tuesday she boarded a bus back to Greensboro, North Carolina, where she now lives with her boyfriend, and she hasn't been heard from since.

"This is not like her," says Maisonet. "She loves her family, she calls us all the time. This doesn't make sense."

The bus left Springfield at 4:15 in the afternoon on August 21 headed for New York City. From there Toni was supposed to get on a bus to Richmond, Virginia before a third and final bus was scheduled to take her home. The trip is almost 700 miles, and the only thing that made it to Greensboro was her luggage, with an empty purse inside.

"What woman do you know runs off, and leaves her clothes and her purse behind," says Maisonet.

The family has reached out to police agencies up and down the East coast, but have gotten little response.

"If you can't help me, and you can't help me, and you can't help me, then who is going to help me," says Maisonet.

And as the days pass, with no word from Toni, their frustration and their worry grows.

"I'm just afraid, I just don't want to be too late that's all," says Maisonet.

After CBS 3 began working on this story, the police took a greater interest in the case and the family is encouraged with how the investigation is progressing. If you have any information on Barrett's disappearance please call the Springfield Police Department.
