Police: Man Shot Son-In-Law, Killed Himself
Victim Taken To Indianapolis Hospital

POSTED: 1:44 pm EST November 8, 2007
UPDATED: 5:14 pm EST November 8, 2007

MEROM, Ind. -- A man killed himself after shooting his son-in-law in the head early Thursday morning, Indiana State Police said.

Investigators said they believe Oscar C. Thompson, 74, shot Travis Beard at about 6 a.m. in a home in Merom, in southwestern Sullivan County.

Police said they received a 911 call from the home, located in the 2100 block of South Third Street, just after 6 a.m. When sheriff's deputies arrived, they found Thompson dead in the driveway.

Inside the home, officers found Beard, 36, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators said Beard had gotten into his vehicle to go to work and was approached by Thompson, who shot him.

According to police, Beard went to the rear of the home and yelled for help from his wife. Thompson fatally shot himself in the head, police said.

Beard was taken to a nearby hospital and was then transported by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Information about Beard's condition was not immediately released.

More than 18 years ago a Vigo County woman went missing and for years the trail has gone cold.

Now, after a tragic shooting in Merom, Indiana, the Vigo County Sheriff's Department is taking another look.

Lynn Ann Thompson was last seen on June 26th, 1989 at her home in Prairie Creek.

That was more than 18 years ago.

Her last name may sound familiar to you, it was just last week when her father-in-law Oscar Thompson, Senior, shot Travis Beard (his grand-daughter's husband) before taking his own life.

The tragic shooting in Merom caused the Vigo County Sheriff's Department to take another look..

"We were on the carport, it was just me and her and she says, Debbie, if I come up missing, pursue it. And I said, oh, Lynn! And she says, no, Debbie, I'm serious, if I come up missing, you've got to promise me you will pursue it," said Debbie (Lynn's Cousin).

She's described as having brown hair with light blue-grey eyes.
Her grey Pontiac Coupe was found at the old K-Mart parking lot on South U.S. 41 and Davis Drive in Terre Haute.
