Coast Guard suspends search for 14 fishermen

JUNEAU, Alaska - The Coast Guard suspended its search tonight for the 14 fishermen still missing in the Bering Sea after their ship disappeared Monday morning.

Coast Guard cutters, airplanes and a helicopter searched a 2,500-square-mile area for three days for the missing 92-foot fishing vessel Arctic Rose and 14 of its crew. The Coast Guard started searching 8:30 a.m. Monday and did not stop until 10:30 tonight, well past the best-case survival time of 36 hours for a person in a properly donned survival suit.

Better weather today allowed the Coast Guard to conduct a thorough search. But, though debris from the vessel was retrieved today, and an oil sheen believed to be emanating from the vessel was relocated, the Coast Guard found no traces of the missing crewmen.

Today, the cutter Boutwell’s crew broke up to six inches of ice from the cutter’s decks before being able to launch their helicopter to join the search. Coast Guard C-130 airplanes from Kodiak searched from dawn to dusk, daily.

The fishing vessels Alaskan Rose and Bering Rose also assisted in the search. The crew of the Alaskan Rose recovered the body of the Arctic Rose's captain, David M. Rundall of Hawaii, Monday. The body of another crewman was also spotted in the water Monday, but heavy seas prevented the Alaskan Rose crew from recovering him.

The searchers endured 25-foot seas, 42-knot winds and low temperatures. Heavy icing forced the Alaskan Rose and Bering Rose to leave the search area Tuesday. The Alaskan Rose is presently en route Dutch Harbor, Alaska, to turn Rundall's body over to the Alaska State Troopers. The vessel attempted to enter St. Paul Island harbor, but heavy weather forced the closure of that port.

The 14 missing Arctic Rose fishermen are Shawn M. Bouchard, 25; James Mills, 25; Angel Mendez, 35;
Kerry P. Egan, 35; Aaron R. Broderick, 22; Jimmy L. Conrad, 22; Robert Foreman, 30; Edward F. Haynes, 35; G.W. Kandris, 25; Kenneth R. Kivlin, 50; Jeff Meincke, 19; Michael Nevreiter, 37; Mike Olney, 47; and David Whitton, 30.

The Coast Guard learned of the Arctic Rose's distress after the vessel's emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) transmitted a distress signal at 3:35 a.m. Monday.

The Coast Guard is assembling a marine board of investigation to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the Arctic Rose and has already begun to collect evidence to support the board's inquiry. At this time, the members of the three-man board have not been named.
