Missing person appeals on YouTube
Thursday, December 7, 2006
A missing person's charity is using online videos in a ground breaking campaign to get children to return home.

The National Missing Persons Helpline launches its video podcasting appeal today with four mothers giving personal messages appealing for their children to return home.

And one of the mothers taking part in the Message from Mum initiative, Nadine Fudge, hopes it might encourage her son Philip to get in touch.

"I would do anything to try and get in touch with him," Ms Fudge said.

"I am trying not to get my hopes up but this campaign shows what a person might look today so I am hoping it might help."

The podcasts are going to be available on websites including You Tube and Yahoo Video. Her son has been missing since December 10 1995 and in her message Ms Fudge says: "You left home on December 10 1995 to go to a Christmas party at HMS Eaglett barracks in Liverpool with some friends.

"I never realised that this would be the last time I would see you - you were only 21 years old them. My prayers and wishes now are for you to get in touch with me and come home for Christmas."

The other mothers taking part are Nicki Durbin, whose son Luke vanished on May 12 last year, and the mothers of Nicola Payne, who has been missing since Decmber 1991 and Carmel Fenech, who disappeared from Crawley eight years ago.

Paul Tuohy, the chief executive fo the National Missing Persons Helpline, said the mothers were being very brave to make the appeals.

He said: "It's the first time we have ever done anything like this and it is going to be an intense campaign. We have to embrace 21st century communications if we are serious about trynig to get younger people to go back to their families. In a way it's worse than a death as parents don't know anything, they are left in limbo, just numbness."

Carmel Fenech

Age at disappearance: 16

Carmel disappeared from her home in Crawley, Sussex on 23 May 1998. Though it is thought that Carmel may have travelled to Brixton in London, as she used to live in nearby Peckham, her current whereabouts are not unknown.

There is great concern for Carmel's welfare and her mum, Deidre, is desperately worried. She urges Carmel to get in touch even if it is just to let her know that she is alright. Deidre says: "Carmel, if you don't want anyone to know where you are that’s fine - we just want to know that you are safe and well. Please just pick up the phone, all you need to say is 'Hi mum, it’s me, I'm fine'. We all love and miss you".

Carmel can call the confidential service Message Home on Freefone 0800 700 740 where she can get help and support.

Carmel, who may be using the surname Pendry, is 5ft tall with black bobbed hair and brown eyes. She is half Maltese with a Mediterranean complexion and has a 2" scar in the middle of her forehead.
