DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)-- Deputies believe human remains found in Dunn County may be a man reported missing more than 10 years ago. The Dunn County Sheriff's Department says Douglas Poach of New Haven was last seen on January 3, 2006. This past Sunday, hunters found the remains in northern Dunn County. Deputies say based on what they found at the scene, they feel it is very likely to be the remains of Poach. They say a DNA sample will be processed, but it could take about 30 days to positively identify the person. Poach was last seen at a family member's home near Amery. Dunn County Sheriff, Dennis Smith, told WEAU earlier this year that Poach was a familiar face around the department as he had been booked numerous times. He added that it was typical of him to disappear for 6 months to a year at a time, but he would always come back and says for him to be gone this long is extremely unusual. At the time of his disappearance, there were some reports that Poach may have traveled to parts of Minnesota, but no one has had contact with him since 2006. |

Human remains identified as those of missing man BARBARA LYON Lee Newspapers 8 hrs ago 0 MENOMONIE — Human remains found by hunters north of Connorsville in 2016 have at last been identified as those of a man missing for more than 13 years. The family of Douglas L. Poach reported him missing on Jan. 3, 2006. He was last seen at a relative’s home in Amery that morning. Poach was 53 at the time and living in the Town of New Haven. A Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Missing & Exploited Children & Adults notice about Poach stated, “There are concerns about his mental well-being, regarding statements he has made.” Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith said that at the time he went missing, Poach had problems with drinking, among others, and had spent quite a bit of time in and out of jail. A year or two after his disappearance, the sheriff said a member of Poach’s family contacted the Sheriff’s Office and agreed to provide DNA samples which had been kept on file ever since. On Tuesday morning, the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office reported that examination and testing results from the National Missing Persons Program had been received. Genetic data obtained from samples confirmed that previously unidentified skeletal remains are those of Poach. About the discovery On Oct. 16, 2016, the sheriff’s office was notified of suspected human remains in the Town of New Haven. A human skull was found next to clothing and hunting boots which contained a skeleton. After County Medical Examiner Chris Kruse determined that the remains were human, they were excavated and collected as evidence while investigators who searched the area and processed the scene. The remains were transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Although the cause of death was not determined, the autopsy revealed that no physical trauma was observed. The only clue to a possible identification lay in the location of the remains, which were submitted to the National Missing Persons Program at the University of North Texas for comparison with the family member reference samples. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the samples showed that they were 7.9 billion times more likely to have originated from a biological sibling as opposed to the unidentified remains originating from an unrelated individual. As a result, they are confident in concluding that the skeletal remains are those of Douglas L. Poach. “There’s no reason to think there was any foul play. We’re satisfied it’s him,” Sheriff Smith said Tuesday. “They couldn’t come up with a cause of death, but his family can get closure, and his remains can now be put to rest.” http://chippewa.com/news/local/human-remai...d6819e6cc5.html |
