Wrapped-up skeleton found buried By Angela Rozas and Steve Schmadeke Chicago Tribune Published March 20, 2007, 8:34 PM CDT Is it the body of a woman who disappeared years ago, a mobster or somebody else? Construction workers digging a sewer line for a new townhouse development near Willowbrook found a buried skeleton wrapped in a blue tarpaulin Tuesday morning. The body, which one worker described as a complete set of bones without any clothing, was discovered more than 5 feet down. "We've never found anything like that," said the construction worker, who declined to identify himself. "We've been doing it for 30 years." Authorities have said only that they found human remains at the site near Bluff Road and Illinois Highway 83, and that the DuPage County coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to try to determine an identity and cause of death. But the location of the body—in a swath of mostly vacant and wooded property between Argonne National Laboratory and the highway—had some neighbors and authorities buzzing. Police in Darien are awaiting word from the coroner's office about whether the body could be that of a woman reported missing more than seven years ago. The bones were found less than a half-mile from where Xu "Sue" Wang's pager and car were found, said Darien Police Chief Robert Pavelchik. Wang, a doctor at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, was reported missing Aug. 11, 1999, by her husband, Yijun Zeng, after she didn't show up at work. Her car and belongings were recovered near the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, which surrounds Argonne, but no other sign of her has been found. Pavelchik said it shouldn't take the coroner's office long to determine whether the body is that of Wang, because the agency has dental records from when she was reported missing. This is not the first time bodies have been found in this area. The bones are less than a half-mile from a purported burial ground for mob victims, where two bodies were found in 1988. A task force formed in the 1980s to solve cold mob cases got a tip about the location from an informant, and at the time sources said as many as seven bodies might be discovered. After five months of digging, authorities unearthed the bodies of Robert Anthony Hatridge, a minor associate of Gerald Scarpelli, a crime syndicate killer-turned-informant who later committed suicide; and Mark Oliver, another minor organized-crime figure. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was not called to the scene Tuesday, and local authorities are handling the investigation of the bones, a spokesman for the agency said. Construction has been under way for about a month on the property where the bones were found, said Josie Gallagher, a salesperson for the townhouse development. Nobody had touched the land for quite some time, she said. Longtime neighbors remembered the mob burial investigation, and wondered whether perhaps the federal government had missed a grave. "When that was found they dug up everything around here, so I don't know," said John Havrilla, whose Darien home-building firm is constructing the Bluff Road Townhomes nearby. "They missed this." Remains not those of Aurora doctor who disappeared in '99 Human remains discovered near Willowbrook in rural DuPage County aren't those of a suburban doctor who vanished in 1999 on her way to work, authorities said Thursday. Dr. Xu "Sue" Wang was reported missing after she failed to arrive for work at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Her car later was discovered parked in the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve near Argonne National Laboratory. The remains discovered Tuesday by a construction crew are those of an adult male, but his identity remains unknown. The body was discovered about a half-mile from where Wang's car was discovered and within a half-mile of a reputed mob burial ground where investigators unearthed two bodies in 1988. Both men were later identified by federal investigators as underworld figures who had mysteriously vanished. http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/310010,...metro23.article |

Remains are not missing Aurora doctor March 23, 2007 BY KRISTEN ZAMBO Staff Writer Investigators still are searching for a DuPage County woman who disappeared eight years ago after police said Thursday that remains found this week don't belong to the Aurora doctor. Construction workers excavating a site for a townhouse development just outside of Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve on Tuesday unearthed human remains. They were wrapped in a tarp near Bluff Road and Route 83 in Downers Grove Township, near Argonne National Laboratory. But they aren't the remains of missing Darien woman Xu "Sue" Wang, who was reported missing Jan. 11, 1999, after she failed to show up for work at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. She was 39 at the time. Wang's car and personal items were found in the preserve shortly after her disappearance. "It's still an open missing-persons case," Darien Police Chief Robert Pavelchik said. "The remains they found are not Dr. Wang." The decomposing remains were found about a half-mile from the preserve's guard residence, in an area undeveloped until recently. The body was of an adult male, possibly about 5-foot-7, bearing tattoos, DuPage County Coroner Pete A. Siekmann said. A cause of death has yet to be determined. "The autopsy showed no signs of advanced age. Hopefully tomorrow morning we might be able to give you more of a description," he said. For years, the region was known as a reputed mob dumping ground. Based on the tattoos and clothing found, federal investigators are trying to determine whether the remains are of a man previously reported missing, Siekmann added. "I'm not going to comment about the gender, the race -- anything to do with the circumstances," said Paul Darrah, communications manager for DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett, who clamped down on other local agencies' release of information in the case. "The investigation continues." Rafat Iqbal, who works part-time at the Clark gas station just down the street from the preserve, said a number of customers asked Thursday about the discovery. He said he wonders what happened to the person. "Maybe a murder? Scary," he said. http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/beaconn...ONES_S1.article |
