Hayley Marie Dodd

Age: 17 Height: 155cm (5'1 Hair: Long Brown Eyes: Grey

Major Crime Investigation Unit are seeking public assistance with their investigation of the disappearance of Hayley Marie Dodd in 1999 from Badgingarra.

On Thursday July 29, 1999 Hayley Marie Dodd, 17 years, travelled to the Dandaragan area on foot with the intention of staying at a friends farming property on the North West Road between Badgingarra and Moora, approximately 18kms from the Badgingarra Townsite. Hayley never arrived at her intended destination.

Police investigating her disappearance are now wanting to speak to :

- The occupants of shiny blue/green sedan travelling east along the North West Road just after 12.00pm on Thursday July 29, 1999

- The occupants of an older army style furniture truck travelling west along the North West road just after 12.00pm on July 29, 1999.

- 4 to 5 youths on a property close to the North West Road who were asked directions by a female driver just after 12.00pm on Thursday July 29, 1999.

It has now been three years since Hayleys disappearance and it is believed that Hayley has become the victim of a violent crime.

A reward of $250,000.00 has been granted by the West Australian State Government for information that may bring Hayley Marie Dodd back to her family and friends, and which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her disappearance.

If you believe this may be you, police are appealing for you to come forward as no matter how trivial or insignificant your information may appear to you, for police it may be hold the vital link in assisting us to solve this disappearance.

Police are asking people to cast their minds back to the day of the disappearance on July 29, 1999. The news at the time was about the tragic deaths of 13 young Australians on a Swiss Canyoning adventure holiday when a wall of water swept them away to their deaths. Maybe that tragedy could trigger a memory that can help police.

Police consider new information in missing teen case
Mid west WA police are investigating new information from a woman who may have been the last person to see missing teenager Hayley Dodd alive. The 17-year-old vanished three years ago when she left Dongara to hitchhike to a friend's farm in Badgingarra. A reward for information on her whereabouts has recently increased to $250,000. Detective Sergeant Eddie Rowe says a woman revealed she saw Hayley walking on the isolated North-West Road towards Moora the day she disappeared. He says the woman also saw a shiny blue-green car and an army-style truck travelling along the road that day, and later asked some youths at a property for directions to Moora. "All of this information is new to the investigation and we'd call upon the owners or drivers of those vehicles to come forward so that we can eliminate them from our inquiries, and for those people if they remember on this day a woman with her daughter travelling in the Badgingarra area to come forward so we can also eliminate them in our inquiries,"

Missing without a trace - a Perth mother still searching for answers.
Broadcast: 28/07/2006

Reporter: Layla Tucak

Print Email
REBECCA CARMODY (PRESENTER): Seven years ago tomorrow one family's worst nightmare began, when 17-year-old Hayley Dodd disappeared near Badgingarra. Her mother, Margaret Dodd, has now resigned herself to thinking her daughter is dead, but she has never given up the search to find her body. Next week is missing person's week and Margaret Dodd, like many other family members in Western Australia, is hoping, once again, that with all the publicity someone might remember something. Layla Tucak reports.

MARGARET DODD: I think about her every day. When you're laid there in bed at night time you can't help but think about things that she used to do. Then you think about what's happened since then and where she could be and you don't sleep very well for it. I've seen her friends grow up and now they've got two, three kids. They're adults.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): Hayley Dodd was just 17 when she went missing, last seen walking along the North West Road between Moora and Badgingarra in 1999. Volunteer searchers and a ten-person police task force failed to find any trace of her. Tomorrow is the seventh anniversary of her disappearance. While Margaret Dodd has given up hope of finding her daughter alive, she has never given up hope that her body will one day be found.

MARGARET DODD: Every single year something always crops up. You get a telephone call, but you have got to look into it. It doesn't matter whether it's from a psychic, somebody claiming they have got information or whatever, I have got to take every single piece seriously.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): It's been seven years since Hayley disappeared what's happened in that time in terms of the investigation, what have you learnt over that time?

MARGARET DODD: We have got more information off the police. At first we didn't have anything whatsoever but over the past year or so they've now told us statements of people who has seen her the day she disappeared, like the guy that gave her a lift. She actually approached him at a roadhouse and asked him if he was going to Perth, he said yes. She said can you give me a lift to Badgingarra and he did. We got to find out the conversation and I heard what was said and I said yeah that was Hayley, she'd do something like that.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): Has there been any recent progress on her case, in particular, I'm thinking about the British profiler that the police said last year they were going to get across, links to Bradley John Murdoch when he was sentenced in December and also there was talk of an investigation into links with Lalita Horseman's killer. Has there been any progress there?

MARGARET DODD: Regarding the geographical profiler, Colin Johnson, I have emailed him to find out if there was anything he could suggest, if there was anything that might've helped and he's never replied. The police haven't really been very helpful with any outcome he may have come up with, they've just said he was no help. Regarding Bradley Murdoch, the police are in progress looking at him and that's as much as I know. With McCartney. We still have not been able to establish his whereabouts when Hayley went missing.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): How do you now reflect on her disappearance it doesn't sound like you believe she'd alive anymore, when did you start thinking about that prospect? 00:22:11

MARGARET DODD: We know our daughter. We know her very, very well. So, when her friend rang me to say she hadn't arrived, I rang triple-0 straight away to say Hayley's missing and went down to the police and after three days I thought 'oh my God, after three it's usually something really bad has happened. From that day I'd tried to tell myself in my mind perhaps she's taken a shortcut, perhaps she's injured, but in my heart I knew something serious had happened.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): How often have you and your family visited, gone to visit that part of the road?

MARGARET DODD: Well first off we used to go every single year. We usually go on the 29th, the anniversary, I usually go on her birthday.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): Margaret Saturday is the anniversary of Hayley's disappearance, what sort of memories come back to you at this time?

MARGARET DODD: I like to think of how I remember her. Smiling, laughing. Like the funniest thing I ever remember her doing is when she was about three years old singing to the Agado song and she was doing all the actions and she was only tiny so it was really funny.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): Today the Dodds were the first to place a plague at a memorial in Mandurah, near their home. It's a missing persons memorial built by the Peel Region Zonta Club, an international women's club.

MARGARET DODD: It's just very simple, it's just Hayley Dodd, missing without a trace July 29th 1999, Badgingarra. I think it's an absolutely wonderful idea because people in our position you still want somewhere to sit and think and place a flower or something, shed a tear or whatever.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER): Do you still hold hope that someone might come forward with some information?

MARGARET DODD: Miracles do happen. I'm hoping, unlikely, that maybe the person responsible might get a conscience and say I've put this family through enough, I'm going to tell them where she is. That's about the best we can hope for.

LAYLA TUCAK (REPORTER):
No mother, I'm sure, expects to outlive their children, let alone have a child disappear, never to be seen again. But you're not alone in WA, and next week is missing person's week, what do you hope for at this time? 00:23:56

MARGARET DODD: I wish that Hayley was a Natasha Ryan. She'd be alive somewhere, but unfortunately she isn't and I'd like to say to say to people like Natasha, people leave home for all sorts of reasons, don't let your family think that you're a Hayley Dodd. Phone home, let somebody know where you are.

British profiler to help search for missing wheatbelt woman
WA police have confirmed that a visiting profiler will apply his methods to the unsolved disappearance of Hayley Dodd.

The 17-year-old was last seen in the wheatbelt six years ago.

London-based investigator Colin Johnson is one of only a small number of geographic profilers in the world and will work with police in three states during his two week visit to Australia.

Superintendent Jeff Byleveld from Major Crime says investigators hope to use Detective Sergeant Johnson's knowledge to solve long-standing investigations.

"We'll be talking to him about Hayley Dodd in particular and some others and hopefully gain some insight into how we can apply his methodology into that investigation and others," he said.

Hayley's mother Margaret Dodd says she does not hold any more hope of finding her daughter, but hopes new methods will help police track down any person responsible for her disappearance.

WHAT would have been Hayley Dodd’s 21st birthday on Saturday marked the end of the $250,000 reward being offered by the State Government for information on her whereabouts.

Hayley was only 18 when she went missing from Northwest Road, near Badgingarra, on July 29, 1999.

Her mother Margaret travelled to the road on Saturday to commemorate what should have been a happy occasion.

It is believed Hayley was walking to a friend’s farm on Northwest Road at the time of her disappearance three years ago. Earlier in the day it is believed she hitch-hiked from Dongara and also from Badgingarra to Northwest Road.

Dogged persistence from Mrs Dodd saw Police Minister Michelle Roberts increase the reward from $100,000 to $250,000 earlier this year.

The bigger reward saw some new information given to police, allowing them to extend the time that Hayley was last seen to about midday.

The reward for information on Hayley’s whereabouts now stands at $100,000.

If you can help police with their inquiries, please contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Killer Given Victim Video, Showed Inmates

REVELATIONS a killer was given access to a video of his victim's semi-naked body, and showed the tape to inmates, have added to pressure on Western Australia's embattled Justice Department.
A week after opening a $2 million prisons inquiry, prompted by a string of serious blunders, the department was forced to admit it had again "dropped the ball", issuing an unreserved apology to the family of Lalita Horsman.
Robin David Macartney was sentenced to life in September 2001 for the murder of 27-year-old Ms Horsman, whose remains were recovered from sand dunes two days after her disappearance in December 1999.
Macartney, who will represent himself in an appeal against his conviction next month, has been given access to all the case evidence, including the crime scene tape of Ms Horsman's body.
It has since emerged the he viewed the tape unsupervised and showed it to other prisoners.
WA Opposition justice spokesman Rob Johnson said the Government should review jailed appellants' access to evidence.
"This situation could now open the floodgates for convicted rapists and pedophiles to get access to graphic footage of their victims by simply launching an appeal against their conviction and representing themselves in court," Mr Johnson said.
An investigation was also needed to examine whether copies of the tape had been distributed within prison, following a talkback radio caller's claim he was given a copy by Macartney and had taken it home, he said.
Brian Tennant, a veteran law reform campaigner who hopes to act as Macartney's advocate at the appeal, said he too had a copy of the tape and had shown it to "scientists and doctors".
Ms Horsman's father, Roger Horsman, who now lives in Hobart, said he felt the justice department was sanctioning Macartney's perversions.
"It's obvious to me Macartney and his friends are just getting their jollies from watching this tape," he told 6PR radio.
"It's like he gets to do it all over again and the justice system supports this.
"I could hardly speak when I was told the other night and since then I have got more upset, more depressed, more angry."
Ian Johnson, acting director for WA prisons, said he had apologised to the Horsmans.
"We're (now) making sure the only time he (Macartney) has access to the actual police interview tapes is during lockdown," he said.
"If he wants to look at any other tape ... then that's to be done under strict supervision."
WA prisons have been plagued by security breaches and violent incidents in recent months, including the alleged repeated rape of a prison tutor by an inmate, and at least four escapes.
Meanwhile, forensic police have spent two days in Geraldton searching cars linked to Macartney for clues to the disappearance of teenager Hayley Dodd, 17, in 1999.

PRISON officers have seized thousands of videotapes from prisoners after a killer showed crime scene footage of his semi-naked victim to fellow inmates.
Convicted killer Robin Macartney is believed to have made several copies of the graphic police tape, one of which he sent to the mother of a teenager he is suspected of murdering.
West Australian Prisons acting executive director Ian Johnson ordered all videotapes confiscated in prisons throughout the state to find out how many copies of the tape existed and whether any other prisoners had tapes of other crime scenes.
"What I wanted them (prison officers) to do was lock it down, get in the cells, search them all and seize the videotapes," he said.
Mr Johnson said officers would watch the videos seized from the state's 3500 prisoners, beginning with those belonging to inmates who share Macartney's cell block at Perth's maximum-security Casuarina prison.
Macartney was jailed for life in 2001 for the murder of Lalita Horsman, 27.
He had taped up her mouth, tied a plastic bag over her head and then sexually assaulted her in sand dunes near Geraldton, 430km north of Perth.
From 12 videos relating to the case, Macartney compiled and edited a tape containing the police crime scene footage of his victim's corpse being exhumed from a beachside grave.
He was entitled to the tapes because he is representing himself in an appeal against his conviction.
He sent copies to Margaret Dodd, the mother of missing teenager Hayley Dodd, to his legal advocate Brian Tennant and a NSW journalist.
It is understood Macartney may face criminal charges for showing the tapes to unauthorised people.
He will still be allowed to view the material for up to two hours each day under supervision.
Mr Tennant visited Macartney yesterday and said his client was distressed and claimed he had only shown the tape to fellow prisoners for research purposes.
"There's ex-policemen, ex-lawyers and ex-teachers in there and he takes advantage of their expertise," Mr Tennant said.
"Now other prisoners have had their tapes taken and it doesn't make him popular."
Mr Johnson said other prisoners preparing appeals would have their tapes reviewed as a priority, and officers would return all other legitimate tapes as soon as possible.
"I don't want to punish 3500 people for what a small percentage does but I'm assuming the worst, which is why I went statewide rather than just Macartney's cell block," Mr Johnson said.
"Until I know the extent of the problem, I can't fix it."

Murdoch cold-blooded, court hears

Dec 17, 2005

Police are reviewing the movements of convicted killer Bradley John Murdoch for possible links to a string of unsolved murders and disappearances in Western Australia.

Murdoch, from Broome in WA's far north, was jailed this week in the Northern Territory for a minimum 28 years after being convicted of the murder of British tourist Peter Falconio and the assault on his girlfriend Joanne Lees.

WA police on Saturday said Murdoch had been checked for possible links to several missing women across the state.

"His profile has been looked at on a number of occasions, and we are looking at him again on a cold case basis," WA Police Sergeant Graham Clifford said.

Clifford said Murdoch's methodology and criminal profile were being scrutinised.

Details from the court case will be examined for extra information on Murdoch's whereabouts at the time of unsolved crimes or any links to disappearances which may have gone unrecorded.

The cold cases being investigated in relation to Murdoch include Perth's Claremont serial killings.

Three young women vanished between 1996 and 19977 after partying in the affluent Perth suburb.

Murdoch's movements also are being examined in relation to the disappearance of teenager Hayley Dodd, 17, who was last seen in 1999 near Badgingarra north of Perth, and a Broome woman missing since 1996.

"Police have been aware of him (Murdoch) for a while, and that doesn't mean he won't come to our attention again," Clifford said.

"It's normal police procedure to revisit (unsolved crimes) on a regular basis.

"Maybe something has come out of this latest court case that will be of some interest."

Coroner to investigate Hayley Dodd mystery

29th November 2008, 9:00 WST

The disappearance and suspected murder of teenager Hayley Dodd in 1999 will be investigated by the State Coroner after the missing girl’s mother demanded an inquest, claiming that police had botched the case.

A spokeswoman for Coroner Alastair Hope told The West Australian yesterday he had decided to hold an inquest into Hayley’s disappearance but it would not be done before April because of a backlog.

Mrs Dodd claimed yesterday that police had abandoned the search for her daughter’s killer and a coronial inquiry was the last option to keep the case alive.

Hayley, then 17, was last seen hitch-hiking on North West Road near Badgingarra, 205km north of Perth, on July 29, 1999. Police believe she was abducted and killed.

Mrs Dodd said she was appalled at the police handling of her daughter’s suspected murder and claimed they had not been interested in solving it from the start. She hoped an inquest would result in a number of possible witnesses police had not interviewed being put on the stand to answer questions about what they saw the day Hayley disappeared. The drivers of a removal truck, a blue-green car and a utility, and 14 shearers were yet to be interviewed and eliminated from the inquiry, she claimed.

“I don’t want to give up on solving Hayley’s case, like the police have, and I think a coronial inquest will stimulate the case again, get it back in the public’s mind and maybe provide new leads,” she said.

“The police investigation, from the initial search all the way through, has been very, very poor. They put in no effort at all at the start so the trail went cold and then it just became too hard for them so they didn’t bother to follow a lot of the leads.

“So we need to try a different way to get the case going again. Whoever is responsible for Hayley disappearing is still out there and I still desperately want them to be caught.”

Mrs Dodd, a mother of five, has pushed detectives into pursuing fresh leads, arranged searches and kicked up a fuss that lifted the reward for information from $50,000 to $250,000.

She said tomorrow would have been Hayley’s 27th birthday and she would head to the Mandurah foreshore with family to place flowers next to a missing persons’ monument.

“It’s always very tough when her birthday comes up because I start to remember giving birth to her and all the fun we used to have on her birthday,” she said.

Hayley had been working as a roustabout in Dongara with a girlfriend when she set off for Moora on July 29 to visit a friend. She got a lift to Winjardie Road and North West Road, walked along North West Road and was last seen about 3km past the Badgingarra-Dandaragan Road corner. Her clothes, bag and personal items have not been found.

Police declined to comment yesterday, saying it was a matter for the coroner.

Witness links young men to Dodd mystery

20th December 2008, 11:45 WST

Police are investigating a fresh lead in the 1999 disappearance and suspected murder of Hayley Dodd after a man came forward claiming that he saw two “suspicious young men” by the side of the road near where the teenager went missing just hours after she was last seen.

Det-Sen. Sgt Gary Nicolau, of the special crime squad, said detectives had spoken to the man and would interview him formally later.

He said police would then consider searching the area where the witness claimed he had seen the men acting suspiciously next to a utility vehicle.

The man came forward after a recent media report about State Coroner Alastair Hope’s decision to hold a coronial inquest into Ms Dodd’s disappearance.

The potential witness rang The West Australian and was put in contact with Hayley’s mother Margaret Dodd, who said his recollection of the day was vivid and credible.

Hayley, then 17, was last seen hitch-hiking on North West Road near Badgingarra, 205km north of Perth, on July 29, 1999. Police believe she was abducted and killed.

Hayley had been working as a roustabout in Dongara with a girlfriend when she set off for Moora that day to visit a friend.

The man who has come forward said he been driving along North West Road near Badgingarra when he had seen two men in their 20s next to a four-wheel-drive vehicle in bush on the side of the road.

He said they looked “out of place and very suspicious” and he regretted having sat on the information for so long.

The man said he had first contacted police two years ago but had never been interviewed. “I remember that day and that moment very clearly and can pinpoint the location where those guys were so there would be no problem doing a search of the area,” he said. “Something about them didn’t seem right.”

A spokeswoman for Mr Hope revealed recently that the Coroner had decided to hold an inquest into Ms Dodd’s disappearance but it would not be done before April because of a backlog.

Mrs Dodd said she had asked for an inquest because she was appalled at the police handling of her daughter’s suspected murder, claiming they had not been interested in solving it from the start.

She hoped an inquest would lead to possible witnesses police had not interviewed giving evidence.

The drivers of a removal truck, a blue-green car and a utility, and 14 shearers were yet to be interviewed and eliminated from the inquiry, she claimed.

Mrs Dodd, a mother of five, has pushed detectives into pursuing leads, arranged searches and kicked up a fuss that lifted the reward for information from $50,000 to $250,000.

Missing teen's mother unaware of killer's confession
Posted Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:38pm AEDT

Map: Dongara 6525 The mother of a West Australian teenager missing for nearly a decade says police did not tell her they had new evidence into the disappearance of her daughter.

Hayley Dodd, 17, was last seen hitchhiking from Dongara, south of Geraldton, to a friend's house in July 1999 when she disappeared somewhere between Badgingarra and Moora.

Her body had never been found.

Hayley's mother Margaret Dodd says police have confirmed they are now investigating a claim made by one of the original suspects, Robin David Macartney.

Macartney, who is currently in prison for the murder in Lalita Horsman in 1999, has given a detailed statement to police, confessing to the murder.

Ms Dodd says she is angry police did not inform her of the new evidence.

"They're supposed to be keeping me informed and I was actually surprised they didn't tell me this," he said.

"[The police officer] did say to me that he didn't want me to talk to the media and I said, 'perhaps you should have told me and I wouldn't have heard it from the media'."

She says police should have investigated Macartney after her daughter's disappearance.

"Back in 1999, when Robin Macartney was arrested, I did ask then if they'd be looking at him to see if he had any involvement in Hayley's case," she said.

"I was actually told by a police officer, 'might do, might not' and they didn't investigate him then. If they had, they might have had more of a chance to locate him the day Hayley went missing."

She was wearing silver sunglasses and carrying a light brown backpack with the word EQUIP on the front.

July 29, 1999
*Hayley vanished after leaving Dongara, where she was working as a roustabout, to visit a friend in Moora.
*Hayley reportedly made a telephone call at 10.30am and was given a lift by a woman to North West Rd, Badgingarra, about 200km north of Perth.
*The last sighting of Hayley was by a motorist who saw her walking towards the farm where she was going at 11.35am that day.

December 2000
*Detectives investigate a report from a hitchiker that two men tried to coax him into a car six days before Hayley went missing.

October 2001
*Claims surface from several York shearers that two brothers, both also shearers, indicated they knew something about the crime. One claimed to know where Hayley's grave was and the shovel that had been used to dig it had not been interviewed by police. The shearers later provide alibis and are ruled out as suspects.

July 2004
*Police say they will interview two rouseabouts in connection with Hayley's disappearance after the men are overheard discussing details of Hayley's murder in a Jurien hotel. Police say the men are not suspects.
*Hayley's mother Margaret Dodd demands police conduct a ``cold case review'' of the police investigation.

September 2004
*Police interview a man who is nominated as a suspect by his former wife after newspaper clippings about Hayley's disappearance. There are claims he had a premonition of a woman being raped and murdered and dragged into bushes on the day Hayley went missing. Forensic tests are conducted on the man's car.

January 2005
*Hayley's parents visit Robin David Macartney four times in Casuarina Prison after he requested a meeting, claiming he had information about Hayley's case. During the meetings, he denies having anything to do with Hayley's disappearance but names a person whom he believed had not only killed Hayley, but was also responsible for Lalita Horsman's murder in December 1999.

February 2005
*Macartney sends Mrs Dodd a copy of a police videotape, which shows graphic footage of the police recovery of Ms Horsman's body. Macartney was given access to the tape in preparation for an appeal against his conviction.
*Mrs Dodd severs contact with Macartney and forwards the tape to a leading WA forensic expert.

April 2005
*Detectives impound and forensically examine two cars that belonged to Macartney in 1999.

October 2005
*A Scotland Yard criminal profiler conducts an informal geographical assessment of several outstanding WA cases, including the Claremont serial killings and suspected murder of Hayley Dodd.

July 2007
*Two farmers claim that reports made to Moora police in October 2005 about tattered clothing found on a farm, 50km northeast of Badgingarra, were never followed up.
*A week later police said they would examine the clothing remnants to determine whether they belonged to Hayley. Hayley's family have not been advised of any results of the clothing examination.

October 2010
*A released prisoner comes forward to police claiming that Macartney has confessed to Hayley's murder. The former inmate also claims that in another Macartney told him he knew the whereabouts of Hayley's body. Police refuse to comment.

Hayley's family mount fresh search

THE family of missing teenager Hayley Dodd will mount a search for her remains with sniffer dogs from Queensland in a bid to crack one of WA's most mysterious crime cases.

Margaret Dodd last week told PerthNow the family was in negotiations with authorities in Queensland to loan cadaver dogs in their 12-year hunt for answers about her daughter's disappearance.

It is understood the family this week secured the dogs, which are trained to detect human remains.

Hayley was 17 when she was last seen walking along North West Rd near Badgingarra in the WA Wheatbelt on July 29, 1999, after picking up a lift while hitch-hiking. She is missing, presumed murdered.

Mrs Dodd said her family had painstakingly mounted several independent ground searches for Hayley, with family, friends and the local community volunteering their time to help search for clues.

Cadaver dogs would help in future searches, she said.

The dogs have previously been used in WA by police searching for missing millionaire Craig Puddy, who is presumed murdered, and unsuccessfully in the hunt for murdered couple Frank and Kim La Rosa, who were later found buried in at a Chittering property in January 2009.

But the success of the use of cadaver dogs in the Dodd case is unclear.

PerthNow understands the trained sniffer dogs have the best ability to detect the odours of decomposing flesh, not bones or skeletal remains. Their sense of smell is so sensitive the canines can unearth buried bodies, depending on their depth below the surface.

Hayley vanished after she hitched a ride from Dongara, where she was working as a roustabout, on July 29, 1999.

She was last seen walking along North West Rd, near Badgingarra, about 200km north of Perth.

Police are convinced Hayley was abducted and murdered, though her body has never been found.

A $250,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for Hayley's disappearance.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hayley Dodd's mum pins last hopes on cadaver dog

Margaret Dodd. Margaret Dodd.

Exclusive: A CADAVER dog arrived in WA from Queensland on Monday to search the area around Badgingarra for missing Mandurah teenager Hayley Dodd.
Margaret Dodd said labrador Baz was her last port of call in searching for her daughter Hayley, who disappeared while hitchhiking in July 1999.

After a police investigation failed to shed light into what happened to the 17-year-old, Mrs Dodd tried Aboriginal trackers, a private detective, a geographic profiler and clairvoyants to find answers.

With all other avenues exhausted, she said everything was pinned on the cadaver dog.

“It will be 12 years since Hayley went missing on July 29, but I hope we won’t get to that date without finding her.”

Mrs Dodd said cadaver dogs were trained to track bones and could find body remains after many years.

Mrs Dodd has been planning to use the cadaver dog for a year.

Her family raised money for airfares and accommodation, while dog handler Martin Dominick offered his services free of charge.
