Decomposed Body Found in Smiths

A decomposed human body was discovered in Smiths shortly before noon Wednesday by a local couple who were collecting aluminum cans and bottles.
Sgt. Jay Jones of the Lee County Sheriff's Department said the body was found a few feet from the roadside on a road off of Highway 280-431, about 20 miles south of Opelika.
Jones said the body was partially obscured by brush. Jones said the body was impossible to identify because of the state of decomposition, but he did say investigators believe it is a female adult. Investigators will not speculate at this point if foul play was involved.
The body was taken to the Department of Forensic Science laboratory in Montgomery where an autopsy is being performed. Jones said officials may have the results of the autopsy as early as this afternoon.
