http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20070325...ppened-to-woman Family still wonders what happened to woman DANIEL GILES/TimesDaily Matt Aday and his wife, Amy, look over newspaper clippings and family photos with Lori Smith Martin and her daughter, Katlynn, and her father, Davis Smith. By Jonathan Willis Region Bureau Published: Sunday, March 25, 2007 at 3:30 a.m. Last Modified: Sunday, March 25, 2007 at 12:29 a.m. FLORENCE -- Lori Martin was 3 months old when her grandmother, Dora Ruth Smith, disappeared. Related Links:Cold case But for the now 30-year-old former Florence resident, the search for Smith is not over. "You don't just disappear when you just have a new grandchild and you are as involved in the church and community as she was," Martin said. Smith's husband, Wilbur, told his children that he heard his wife leave the house and saw her get into a lime green LTD in the middle of the night. The family thought they were close to finding out what happened in 2003 when residents of Smith's old home on Weakley Street in Weeden Heights found a letter beneath some old wallpaper. "There was a letter and $200 in an envelope like she was going to send it to someone," Martin said. "The letter said, 'They are trying to take my food away and kill me. Please help me.' " Florence police called for a special team of cadaver dogs to search the property. The dogs alerted their trainers to something in an old shed behind the home. After digging several feet belo w the surface, officers hit concrete or hard rocks and were forced to stop the dig. Smith's son, David Smith, thought at the time that he might finally have closure about his mother's disappearance. "I had my biggest hopes of finding out what happened to her when they found the money and the letter," Smith said. "Until then, we had always been told that she just left. I never really believed that." David Smith reported his mother missing several days after last seeing her on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1977. She had left behind her purse, clothes and dentures. Wilbur Smith remarried a few years later and lived in the house until his death in 1995. David Smith said his father never really talked about Ruth Smith's disappearance. Florence police Lt. Randy England said he recently opened the file on the case and it is still on his desk. "It wasn't classified as a murder because a body was never found," England said. He said, however, that there is no statute of limitations on the case. "We have some theories on the case but there's nothing that we have been able to prove," he said. "I hope that anyone that might still have some potential evidence will call me." Several members of the Smith family have indicated that they would like to dig deeper in the area where the dogs searched. "I have always wanted to know what happened to her because I am the oldest grandchild," Martin said. "I think it would bring some closure to our entire family if we could know what happened." |
