12/15/06-Gregg County
Forensic Facial Reconstruction Completed On Unidentified Body

In a further effort to identify the body of a homicide victim located near Kilgore on October 29, 2006 the Gregg County Sheriff's Office had requested the assistance of a forensic artist assigned to the Texas Rangers Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety in Austin. The deceased had been severely burned and this procedure is being utilized to attempt to gain positive identity.

Forensic artist Suzanne Birdwell has completed a facial reconstruction from the remains of the unidentified victim and has provided this agency with photographs of the forensic art sculpture that depicts the possible appearance of the deceased.

The three-dimensional sculpture is based on the information submitted from medical reports, crime scene findings, skeletal topography, age, sex and ethnicity. Sheriff's investigators and the medical examiners from the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas has remained in contact with Suzanne throughout the reconstruction procedure to provide her with every known detail that would assist her development of a reasonable likeness of the deceased. "We greatly appreciate the efforts afforded to us by the Texas Rangers service and their forensic artist, said Sheriff Maxey Cerliano".

The autopsy examination concluded that the victim appeared to be a young adult Caucasian female; possibly in the late teens to mid-twenties, approximately 5' 04" tall. The deceased was possibly wearing blue jeans and a mauve or purple colored long-sleeve sweater or blouse. The victim's hair may be blondish-red in color.

Dental records may be utilized for positive identification and requests for comparison are being directed to the medical examiners office.

Forensic model may crack case
Investigators reconstruct face of woman found in Kilgore

By ADAM J. HOLLAND

Saturday, December 16, 2006

Investigators can now place a possible face to an unidentified body found smoldering near Kilgore on October 29.

A forensic artist has completed a facial reconstruction from the remains of the victim, in an attempt to help law enforcement make a positive identification.

Sheriff's investigators found the body so badly burned that they could not initially determine race or approximate age, Capt. Ken Hartley of the Gregg County Sheriff's Department has previously said.

"An autopsy provided a more clear description, but due to the burned remains, we really have no clean identification," Hartley said in November.

The three-dimensional sculpture is based on the information from the autopsy, crime scene findings, skeletal topography, age, sex and ethnicity.

According to the autopsy examination, the victim appeared to be a young adult white female, about 5 feet 4 inches tall.

Evidence at the Fritz Swanson Road scene indicated the woman possibly was wearing blue jeans and a mauve or purplish-colored long sleeve shirt or sweater. Her hair may have been blondish-red in color.

Although the case is being investigated as a homicide, a cause of death has not been released.

In another local missing persons case involving 23-year-old Brandi Wells of Brownsboro, organizers are planning a second search on Dec. 23, of the area where she was last seen alive, or could have been.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Elks Lodge at 2101 E. Marshall Ave.

Wells was reported missing on Aug. 3 from Graham Central Station, a Longview night club. Her car was found abandoned a few days later on Interstate 20, near FM 2087.

She was eliminated as a possible match to the burned body on Nov. 16 by the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, where the autopsy was performed.

Gregg County Authorities Name "Person of Interest" in Grim Cold Case
Gregg County Shares New Info On Burned Body Of Woman Found In 2006

News Clip: http://www.kltv.com/global/video/popup/pop..._2&rnd=70799356

Gregg county authorities are announcing a lead in a cold case. A "person of interest" is announced in relation to a burned body found on the side of the road a year and a half ago.

On October 29, 2006 the body of an unidentified woman was found in Kilgore, off of Fritz Swanson Road". Today, Gregg county authorities released a picture of Joseph Wayne Burnette, 30 of Longview.

Authorities say Burnette was the last person with the woman before she died.

From jail, Burnette has apparently admitted that he gave a woman a ride in his blue greenish dodge pick-up truck. The woman he gave a ride to fits the description of the dead woman. Authorities say Burnette gave the woman a ride just hours before the unidentified woman was killed. "If anybody has specifically seen Joseph Wayne Burnette with this victim in this dodge pick-up truck, at a local restaurant , motel, or park, we want them to contact us. Hopefully, we can get some leads and identify who this victim is," said Mike Claxton of the Gregg County Sheriff's Department.

The woman is believed to be between 17-22 years of age, 5'03"-5'05", and probably average weight. Investigators say the victim was wearing blue jeans, a mauve and purplish colored long-sleeved shirt or sweater. If you recognize this woman, please call the Gregg County Sheriff's office.

urders, Disappearance Share Common Suspect

Staff Photo By Tom TurnerPRESS CONFERENCE: Gregg County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Mike Claxton speaks to reporters at a press conference at the Gregg County Sheriff’s Department in Longview on Monday.By KENNETH DEAN
Staff Writer

LONGVIEW - Authorities have identified a person of interest in the "sexual homicide" of a woman whose burned body was discovered near Kilgore in 2006, but the question remains - who is the woman?

The Gregg County Sheriff's Office hopes by releasing new information about a man they say is a sexual predator with a violent disposition will lead to the woman's identity.

A facial reconstruction done by a forensic artist of an unknown murder victim is displayed. They have also said the man, identified as 30-year-old Joseph Wayne Burnette, could possibly be responsible for the disappearance of a Brownsboro woman who has been missing for several years and the death of a local prostitute.

"This woman (whose burned body was found near Kilgore) was tragically murdered and we feel that someone out there knows who she is. We just hope anyone with information that could lead us to her identity will step forward," Lt. Mike Claxton said during a press conference Monday.

Staff photo by Tom TurnerJoseph Wayne Burnette is the owner of this Dodge pickup truck.Claxton said DNA is available to help match any missing woman. He said the victim is believed to be a white female between the age of 17 and 22, 5-3 to 5-5 in height, and weighed 100 to 120 pounds.

The woman was wearing a pair of size 7-8 "One Tuff Babe" jeans and a purple or mauve-colored shirt or sweatshirt. It is believed she had either blonde hair with red highlights or red hair with blonde highlights.

Courtesy Gregg County SheriffJoseph Wayne Burnette"We have spent a lot of time running down leads and we want to identify her," he said. We are asking for the public's help."

Claxton said based on information gathered in an interview with Burnette investigators are "very confident" he was with the victim when she died.

Burnette, who is currently in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for failure to comply with sex offender registration, was first convicted in Rusk County in 1997 of aggravated sexual assault. He was released on parole in July 2005. He was investigated by the Gregg County Sheriff's office for failure to comply with sex offender registration in August 2006 and was arrested in September 2006 but released from Upshur County Jail on bond the following day. Burnette was arrested in February 2007 on sex offender violations and was then sent to TDCJ in May.

Claxton said during the time Burnette was out of jail, the burned woman's body was found, Brandi Wells, 23, of Brownsboro went missing and the body of 40-year-old Deena Cedillio or Deena Garcia was found in Longview.

Ms. Wells was last seen at a Longview nightclub Aug, 3, 2006 and has not been heard from since. Ms. Cedillio's body was found Dec. 6, 2006 near East Whaley Street.

Claxton said Burnette has not been charged in any of the crimes and he stopped short of calling Burnette a serial killer. However, he said the man fits certain characteristics and that he found it odd that since Burnette was incarcerated in 2007 there have been no further reports of missing women in Longview.

Claxton said the crimes for which Burnette was convicted have an "element of brutality" to them, and said the man is a "continuing threat."

"We have two other cases that came up during this same time period and they could be connected," he said.

Claxton said during the time Burnette was out, he was caught in a New Diana neighborhood watching a high school girl perform cheerleading moves in her front yard. This act led to his arrest and subsequent return to prison.

Burnette is not scheduled for release for 10 years, but law enforcement wants him to remain behind bars. Claxton said Burnette's initial offense of aggravated sexual assault and his pattern of criminal activity "have elements of brutality," violence and of "conscious selection of victims."

Asked if Burnette is suspected of being a serial killer, Claxton said, "I can't say that, but I can say he is a sexual predator with a very violent temper, who under certain circumstances could escalate that violence."

Claxton would not say what specifically led authorities to Burnette in relation to the unidentified woman's body, but said there was evidence.

"I cannot get into that at this time," he said.

Claxton said he hopes photographs of the unidentified woman, Burnette and his green Dodge pickup might provide much needed information as to her identity.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Gregg County Sheriff's Office at 903-236-8400 or toll free at 800-765-2189.

"We know that this young woman belonged to someone out there, that someplace she has a family that loves her. We want to get her home," Claxton said.

Who is Lavender Doe?
Found in a wooded area of Kilgore, Texas on October 29, 2006. A teenaged girl or young woman remains a mystery. Who killed her? Who is she? She is estimated to be between 13 and 22 years of age. Her hair color was either blonde hair with red highlights or it could have been red hair with blonde highlights. Her height is around five feet three inches to five feet five inches. Her teeth were in good condition (most likely had come from a middle class background). On her body was found a pair of jeans 7/8 in size which were the "one tuff Babe" brand. The top she wore was mauve.
To solve the mystery of who killed her we must find out who she is. If you have any information as to her identity please contact the Dallas City Med Examiners Office at (214)920-5900.
