Capt. Randy Mosley, of the North Augusta Public Safety Department, is the program coordinator for Project Lifesaver.
Click photo for options1. WHAT IS PROJECT LIFESAVER?

"Project Lifesaver is a tracking system. It's basically for people who can't look after themselves."

2. HOW DOES IT WORK?

"The client wears a wristwatch-size transmitter. It transmits every second. If that person does wander off, then (caregivers) would notify our office."

3. WHOM DOES IT BENEFIT?

"Folks may have Alzheimer's disease, autism, Down syndrome, Sotos syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, traumatic brain injuries or other conditions that cause wandering. Statistics show that 95 percent of Alzheimer's patients and 5 percent of special needs children wander."

4. WHY ARE YOU IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM?

"We saw a need as the baby boomers come of age. We're getting calls about people who wander every day. We've lost people over the last few years, and we haven't found them for months."

5. HAVE YOU USED THE SERVICES IN NORTH AUGUSTA OR AIKEN COUNTY YET?

"No. We're taking applications now. We hope to have clients using (the services) by Nov. 1. It's totally nonprofit, and it's totally going to be supported by donations."

Albert Einstein:
The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
