Dad's plea to girl on 15th anniversary of her disappearance

Mr Cheesman appeals for his daughter's return

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryADVERTISEMENTPublished Date: 03 November 2008
A father who last saw his daughter 15 years ago today has made an emotional appeal for her to call home.
After years of searching, dad Eric Cheesman has pleaded for his daughter to "get in touch and let us know you are all right."

Jaime Cheesman was just 16 when she left her Wellingborough home to visit friends in Grimsby. She never returned home and down the years her father has worked tirelessly to find her.

Despite more than a decade of disappointment, Mr Cheesman still holds out hope that Jaime is alive and well and may respond to this latest appeal.

Mr Cheesman said: "I would just like her to get in touch. It has been difficult over the years but we have had to take it in our stride. We are just hoping nothing has happened to her.

"Some of her friends have been in touch with me about what she might or might not be doing but there is no actual proof."

Police officers, who are still looking into the case, know that Jaime arrived safely in Grimsby in November, 1993.

She signed on for unemployment benefit and was staying with friends.
However, she is said to have an argument and gone to stay with someone else in north Lincolnshire. She has not been seen since.

There have been some reported sightings of her in Wellingborough's Swansgate shopping centre and nearby Cambridge Street but it is still uncertain whether these were genuine sightings or false alarms.

Mr Cheesman also believes he may have seen his daughter in the town on occasions but cannot be sure whether it was really her.

Since Jaime left Mr Cheesman has been determined to maintain the profile of the search for Jaime.

He has fronted numerous television campaigns and distributed many leaflets and posters appealing for information about her whereabouts.

STILL MISSING – Jaime Cheesman was last seen by her father, Eric, inset, in 1993

Jaime Cheesman vanished on November 5, 1993.
Ever since the girl, who was 16 at the time, failed to return from a trip to Grimsby with friends, relatives and police officers have kept up the search and remain optimistic about her returning to her Wellingborough home.

They have searched hours of CCTV footage, released several appeals and spoken to Jaime's old friends about where she might be now.

Dad Eric Cheesman, 66, believes his daughter could still be alive and might be willing to hear some family news – if only he could find her and make contact.

He said: "Sometimes her friends ring me to see if anything has happened. I also ring them to see if they have heard anything. We have heard she might be in London or Leicester or even Northampton.

"However, there have been a few false alarms in various places around the country. I hope she will turn up one day. I keep in regular touch with the police and Missing People."

Jaime grew up with her parents Eric and Barbara in Wellingborough and attended Christopher Hatton School in Wellingborough and later Lings School, Northampton.

Jaime was popular and had many friends in and out of school. She enjoyed letter writing and kept in touch with friends by letter. She also made a number of friends who were part of the traveller communities in Wellingborough, Northampton and Irchester.

The drama of her disappearance started when Jaime reportedly had an argument with friends while in Grimsby and went to stay with someone else in the north Lincolnshire area. Her parents have never heard from her since.

Police know she arrived safely in Grimsby, as she signed on for unemployment benefit. She stayed that night with friends at an address in Coomber Place, Grimsby, as she had done on previous occasions. It was reported that overnight, Jaime became involved in an argument and left the address, leaving her possessions behind. She never returned to Coomber Place or her parents' home. Jaime had a number of friends in Grimsby, but at the time nobody was identified who admitted seeing her after she left Coomber Place.

There were numerous sightings after her disappearance, although there is uncertainty about whether these were actually Jaime or simply girls who looked like her.

In January or February 1994, a security guard in Wellingborough's Swansgate shopping centre said he had chatted to Jaime, not knowing she was a missing person.

And in 1996, a family friend told Mr Cheesman he saw Jaime leaving the old Leather Bottle pub, in Cambridge Street, Wellingborough. According to the witness Jaime was with friends and called out, but then laughed and ran off.

The trail then went cold for years until 2004, when Mr Cheesman thought he saw someone who might have been Jaime walking through Wellingborough market. He did not call out but often wonders what might have happened had he shouted her name.

He said: "I was talking to one of the traders and this woman came down the next row.
I thought ‘is it or isn’t it?’ She was about the right height and the right age. I didn’t call out but I suppose I should’ve done.”

Mr Cheesman later told the police and looked through CCTV tapes of the market from that day. However he could not spot her.

A couple of years later he thought he might have seen her again when he was driving in Great Park Street, Wellingborough.

He said: “There was a girl on a bike and it looked so much like her. I often have to take a double look when I see people who look like her.”

In the past few months Mr Cheesman has been in contact with Police Community Support Officers about putting a new appeal poster in the Swansgate centre.

n The search for Jaime Cheesman continues. Anyone with information about her whereabouts should call Northamptonshire police on 08453 700700 or the National Missing Persons Helpline on 0500 700 700

Renewed Appeals For Girl Missing For 13 Years Back

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Location: Northants Police Online > News > Web News > Archives 2006

Police and the family of Jaime Cheesman, who has been missing for 13 years, are renewing their appeals for Jaime or anyone who knows where she is to contact them.

Jaime, who lived with her parents Eric and Barbara in Wellingborough, was 16 when she was reported missing in November 1993 after staying with friends in Grimsby.

Media appeals at the time of her disappearance led to a number of unconfirmed sightings of Jaime, but none of these were ever corroborated. Checks of official records have also failed to locate Jaime and she is officially recorded as a missing person – her details are registered with the National Missing Persons Helpline and on the Missing Kids UK website.

Inspector Martin Kinchin, of Northamptonshire Police, who is leading the appeals for information, said: "Jaime has now been missing for 13 years and obviously I will have concerns for her welfare until she is found.

"Jaime was 16 when she went missing, so would now be 29 and her life might have changed dramatically. Obviously at 29 Jaime is not going to be taken home like a child, but her family would desperately like to know that she is safe and happy, if nothing else.

"At the time of Jaime going missing, enquiries were carried out in Northamptonshire and Grimsby, without any success. I know that some of Jaime’s associates were involved in minor crime and may have been reluctant to talk to the police at the time; others may have agreed to not reveal her location. It is my hope that after 13 years people may now feel able to help me piece together Jaime’s story.

"There is no known reason for Jaime not to have made contact with her family. However, after her disappearance, two rumours circulated: one that she was pregnant, and another that she had decided to live a Traveller lifestyle. If Jaime was pregnant her child would now be 12 years old. Jaime is not in any kind of trouble and her family, who still live in Wellingborough, are desperate to hear from her.

"Jaime's appearance will have changed over 13 years and even people who knew her well might find it difficult to confidently recognise her now. For this reason I am not appealing for sightings of Jaime, by people who don't know her. Instead I would appeal for anybody and everybody who has ever known Jaime to contact me, even if they have been spoken to by us before. I want to know everything about Jaime - what she was like, what she liked, her lifestyle, habits and interests and who else she knew. Ultimately I would like to know where she went in November 1993 and, importantly, where she is now.

"I would love Jaime or somebody who knows her whereabouts to contact me, in confidence, to confirm she is safe and well, but I have to acknowledge the possibility that Jamie has died since 1993, perhaps under a different identity, and I welcome any information whatsoever."

Jaime’s father, Eric Cheesman, 64, from Wellingborough, said: "We would really like to hear from Jaime or anyone who knows what’s happened to her over the past 13 years. She was an outgoing girl with quite a few friends and someone must know something."

Jaime was reported missing to Police on 8 November 1993. It is known that at the beginning of that month Jaime returned to her parents' home around the time of her grandfather’s birthday. On 3 November she left home with two friends to travel to Grimsby. It is known that she arrived safely in Grimsby, as she signed on for unemployment benefit. She stayed that night with friends at an address in Coomber Place, Grimsby, as she had done on previous occasions. It was reported that overnight, Jaime became involved in an argument and left the address, leaving her possessions behind. She never returned to Coomber Place or her parents’ home. Jaime had a number of associates in Grimsby, but at the time nobody was identified who admitted seeing her after she left Coomber Place.

Jaime grew up with her parents in Wellingborough and attended Christopher Hatton School in Wellingborough and later Lings School in Northampton. She had a poor attendance record at school and regularly played truant in the later years.

Jaime was popular and had many friends both in and out of school. She enjoyed letter writing and kept in touch with friends by letter. She also made a number of friends who were part of the Traveller communities in Wellingborough, Northampton and Irchester.

In 1993, Jaime left school and started travelling frequently, with her parents knowledge, to meet and stay with friends in Grimsby. Although she was often in Grimsby for some time she maintained contact with her parents. Jaime registered to claim benefits in Grimsby shortly before her disappearance.

Jaime or anyone who knows her whereabouts now or anyone with any information is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 08453 700700 or, if you would prefer to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Alternatively, Jaime or anyone who knew her or knows her can contact Inspector Martin Kinchin by e-mail on martin.kinchin@northants.pnn.police.uk
