Ada dropped her bags by the fireplace she'd just emerged from. She was just getting home from answering the call she'd gotten from David at around 2 AM, and she was wired on adrenaline. She kicked off her shoes and slipped into the bedroom. "Charlie," she whispered, curling up in the space next to him on the bed. "I just got to harvest acromantula venom."

Which was exciting in two different ways. First because it was acromantula venom; it was practically the holy grail for potions dealers, and David had let her harvest it on her own. Second because it was the last ingredient she needed for the potion she'd been working on perfecting in her free time: a faster-working alternative to Skele-gro, that not only repaired bones twice as fast, but also left them nearly impervious to future breaks.

"It was huge," she added, grinning.

Charlie had historically been a deep sleeper, but with Ada working so often on nights and their schedules being so out of sync his body had learned to wake up at significant mattress weight shifts. Especially since he'd moved the bed up against the wall to prevent Ada from falling out of it- no more false alarms. Whether she was coming or going, he wanted to know about it, and thankfully his body had taken quite well to the training.

He'd woken up a moment after she found herself next to him in bed. He turned to face her and automatically threw an arm over her waist, but did not open his eyes. None of what she'd said sounded appealing in anyway. "That sounds terrifying," he commented, and tried to get closer to her, but she was on top of the blankets and he was underneath them, so it didn't work. He blinked his eyes open at her. "Please tell me the giant spider was dead." It had to be, right?

"No!" she argued, nuzzling his neck, "It wasn't, it was really ... beautiful." She paused thoughtfully for a moment, "And sad." She moved closer to him, but didn't get under the covers; there was no way she was going back to sleep now. She was used to the irregularity of her schedule at this point and nights where she only had a few hours of rest. It didn't matter, everything she was doing was new and exciting, and David gave her way more freedom than any other boss would. Probably more than he should give her, actually, not that she was complaining. And for that, Ada figured answering calls in the middle of the night was a small price to pay.

She rolled onto her back and sighed at the ceiling. "It was dying when we got there. That's how it works. The venom dries up within a few hours, and they're ... you know, giant venomous spiders, they'll kill you if you try to harvest it while they're alive. That's why it's so rare- come to think of it, I wonder how David happened to find that spider before anyone else...." Probably better not to think on that too long. What they were doing was pretty far underground, but she kind of got the impression that he'd been involved in shadier dealings in the past.

Charlie did not want to get up yet, but if Ada wasn't going to stay in bed with him, he would. Time was precious and he could sleep when Ada was away or when they were both tired. He'd slept five hours; that was enough for now. But he was going to stay in bed as long as possible, so that meant he wouldn't get up until Ada did. Which meant, just in case he got to go back to sleep, he wouldn't force himself into complete wakefulness just yet.

Which is the only reason why the next words he said came out of his mouth at all. "That's lovely, that is... giant eight legged monster, would have killed you in other circumstances, but got your love instead in it's final moments... that's poetry..." he murmured sleepily, staring at the side of her face as she stared at the ceiling.

"It was really lovely," she agreed, ignoring the potential sarcasm on his part. "I don't think I could make you understand why any more than you could make anything about Parliament or ... whatever beautiful to me." She turned her head to study him for a minute. He was decidedly really lovely himself, but telling him so usually only got an eye-roll in response. So instead she rolled back over to give him a quick kiss, then continued rolling over him and off the side of her bed to land on her feet. "Anyway, now I can finish that potion!" she announced excitedly. "...I think," she added after a second's hesitation, backing slowly out the door, "Go back to sleep, I just wanted you to know I was home."

Charlie was not being sarcastic. He might not have thought the giant spider was beautiful by itself, but he did think that Ada caring about it was. He shook his head lightly as she went on; he did not think Parliament was beautiful. "Parliament's not beautiful; you're beautiful," he told her quickly as she kissed him and rolled off the bed.

He sat up and started to get out of bed, shaking his head at the last thing she said. "I don't want to sleep- I want to be awake with you. I'll sleep when you sleep," he told her smiling. He rubbed his eyes and stood up. "I can make breakfast or help with the potion..." he suggested as he pulled a t-shirt out of the bureau and pulled it over his head.

She smiled, "You'll never sleep, then."

"Both!" she declared in response to his suggestion. She blew him a kiss from the doorway, then twirled back into the living room. "I'm sta-arving," she added, lugging her copper cauldron out of what was supposed to be the linen closet and setting it down on the kitchen table.
