Sunday March 18, 2040 Early evening (just before Sunday dinner) Briar was in the shower when she first noticed it. Under her left arm, a hard, unmovable lump, about half an inch in diameter. After the steam had cleared from the mirror, she stood in front of it with a towel wrapped around her hair, pressing her fingertips against every inch of her skin. Just the one. She frowned and knit her eyebrows, “What….” She raised her arm up to look at it, but it wasn’t close enough to the surface. She stepped into the bedroom with her arm above her head, still trying to get a better look. "Elliott, could you just-" She took his hand without actually waiting for a yes and guided it to where hers had just been, "That hasn't always been there, right? I'm not crazy." She glanced up at him finally, still looking bewildered. It wasn't exactly a spot that was touched often, but it still would have made sense for him to notice it given its close proximity to other things that definitely were. |

"Well, I'm sure your lymph node has always been there," he started off teasing, but then grew concerned once he felt what she felt. "But it certainly hasn't always been hard as a rock. Does it hurt? Is it just this one?" he automatically brought his other hand around to check the other side and felt nothing. "Have you been sick? Or feeling tired?" Briar was notoriously bad at taking care of herself. She had morning sickness for weeks before actually going to the clinic and learning she was pregnant. She interviewed a new chef while she was in labor. "If you've been having glandular fever and just ignoring it, Briar... you lot at the restaurant eat after each other all the time." He moved his hands from under her arms to feel at her neck instead; those lymph nodes were more likely to swell if she had glandular fever. He didn't think anything felt different there, though. |

She rolled her eyes, "I have a hyperactive toddler and a beyond-full-time job. I'm always exhausted." She moved her hand back under her arm while he searched her neck. "It doesn't hurt, my throat is fine, no headaches. My back has been hurting a bit, I guess, but I feel ... I mean, I feel ...." If she was being honest, not very good, but she was notoriously stoic when it came to these kinds of things. She'd gotten so used to having to ignore feeling sick that she genuinely didn't feel much anymore. Usually Elliott or Noah noticed she was sick well before she did. "Not completely terrible. Maybe a little off," she admitted, shrugging. |

"The bubonic plague, then," Elliott's words were teasing but his tone was not. For Briar to admit she was feeling badly at all meant that something was definitely going on. He stepped in closer and wrapped his arms around her back and started massaging his fingers along the sides of her spine. He pursed his lips, thinking, and then looked into her eyes. "You should call your mum." It was an easier suggesting than trying to force Briar to actually make an appointment with a doctor. |

She tried to force a smile, but it came out as more of a grimace as his fingers reached her upper spine. Not because it hurt all that much, really, but because she was starting to definitely feel anxious. Whatever this was, it hadn't been there even two weeks ago. She checked, she'd always checked, once a month like she was supposed to. She might not be good about taking care of herself when she was sick, but that didn't mean she had a death wish. And ignoring a lump in a lymph node was completely different than ignoring a cold. She wasn't that irresponsible. She closed her eyes, still not saying anything for a long moment. When she looked back at him again, she mirrored his expression. "Yeah ... I think I should," she conceded easily. She was trying to sound nonchalant, but her body language betrayed her unease. |

Elliott didn't like anything about the way she was acting. Which probably meant, unsurprisingly, that she was feeling worse than she was letting on. He moved his hands up her back to her head and undid the towel from her hair and let it drop to the floor. He ran his hands over her damp hair, pushed it away from her face, and kissed her forehead. "But before that, I'm going to brush your hair," Elliott said, then let go, stepped around her, and picked up the towel and started toward the bathroom to hang the towel up and get her hairbrush. |

She smiled when he kissed her forehead. This was the Elliott she really loved, the one who had her so perfectly figured out. Because talking about it probably wasn't going to make her feel better right now, and that meant a distraction was necessary. She could even sort of handle letting him take care of her when it was small like this. It was mostly the attempts at grand gestures that she couldn't tolerate. Still, she'd never allowed it before without putting up at least a small fight, and she wasn't going to start now. "You really don't have to," she insisted halfheartedly as he started for the bathroom, "We might be late." |

"We won't be late," he promised as he picked up her hairbrush and came back into the room. He sat on the bed with his back to the propped up pillows and patted the space between his legs for her to sit. |

She smiled fondly at him and rolled her eyes, then climbed onto the bed and settled herself between his legs. She hugged her knees and leaned back against him for a second. "See? I can let you take care of me," she joked lightly, "Brush away." |
