"Briar? What are you still doing here?"

Briar barely looked up from the inventory list spread across her desk. "It's like three o'clock, Noah."

"Yeah ... don't you have that thing today?"

"What-"

"The benefit tea? For, you know, your husband?"

"The ben- shit!" She pushed back from her desk suddenly and pushed up her sleeve to look at her watch. 3:15. "Shit, shit, shit!" That left forty-five minutes to get home, get ready, and get to Altrincham. Fortunately Elliott could make the last bit take practically no time at all. She groaned and scrambled to get her keys and sweep the papers into a drawer, "He's going to kill me."

Briar was already halfway out of the restaurant when she realized she'd forgotten the baby; Kevin had just dropped her off. She spun around and nearly ran into Noah, who was holding a still-napping Ruby out to her. Luckily she was an abnormally sound sleeper. She started to thank him, but he turned her around and gave her a gentle push out the door, "You're welcome. Don't drive like a girl. Elliott would probably actually kill you if you wrecked your car speeding home- bad publicity, and all that." She turned her head and rolled her eyes at him, then buckled Ruby into her car seat and drove home as fast as was legally possible.

She burst through the front door, already kicking off her shoes while she balanced Ruby on her hip. "I am so, so, so sorry!" she called out, not sure where Elliott was.

Elliott walked out of their bedroom, looking down at his tie as he tied it. "Are you alright?" he asked, still not looking up as he looped his fingers around. "I was about to phone."

He looked up then and his eyebrows raised at the sight of Ruby. "I thought she was with Kevin...?" Apparently not. It was alright that she came; it just didn't give them much time to get her calmed down after Apperating... and Floo was out of the question because arriving covered in soot would not go over well and Elliott couldn't be trusted to not miss spots.

His brain then registered that she had been apologizing and he back tracked as he tightened his knot. "Wait, sorry for what?" They still had time, not much, especially with Ruby...which now that he thought about it he remembered vaguely deciding that it would be good for her to come to afternoon events. Not for that, then. For her timing? Probably, though he'd only just noticed himself that she was later than she ought to have been. "You weren't seen, were you?" That would be a big one. That would be 'no, you are not coming, because you can't be two places at once.'

She was already to the bedroom when he started talking. She set Ruby down in the middle of the bed and built a pillow-fence around her so she could finish her nap while Briar got ready. "What? Oh, no, I try to be careful about that. I went out the back, only Noah knew I was in today," she explained, leaving a trail of clothes behind her while she undressed on her way into the closet, "I'm just sorry I'm late." She was moving too fast to notice that he actually wasn't cross with her. She came out with two dresses and stood in front of the mirror. She held up the first dress and tilted her head appraisingly. "And she was with Kevin, but I thought you decided she should be there, so he went into work," she added, addressing his first question. She switched to the other dress, "Is that still alright? I can probably call Eoin...."

"No- no Eoin!" Elliott answered probably more shortly than necessary. It was just... it was a Saturday afternoon and... Eoin wasn't at work, so... he highly doubted he was sober. Besides, Eoin was terrible at the actually taking care of a baby parts. He'd changed maybe one diaper. And that was, as far as Elliott knew, a generous estimate. "I want her there- you're right- you were just both gone and I then when you weren't here earlier I thought maybe I was confusing events." Which was very easy to do during campaign season.

"We'll just have to be quick," he declared. He pointed at Briar. "Don't deliberate- just pick," he told Briar. He himself was wearing a light pink shirt, if that influenced Briar's decision at all. "I'm getting that green-ish dress with the pink roses for Ruby," he told her as he left their room for the nursery. "Unless you have a better idea," he called out as he searched through Ruby's closet.

She rolled her eyes at his suggestion and settled on the first dress. She tossed the other onto the bed. "It doesn't matter," she called after him, stepping into the dress but leaving it unzipped for the moment, "She'll hate any dress you put her in." Or any clothes, really, especially when the weather was this warm. "Oh, could you possibly switch everything into the nicer diaper bag while you're out there? It's in the hall closet." They had to have two; she couldn't very well ask Kevin or Elliott to carry something that looked more or less like a purse, but she wasn't about to let a bag with plastic buckles and velcro ruin her outfit.

Briar started braiding her hair while she looked through the closet for shoes. After a brief search, she found the match to a tan peep-toe and slipped them on on her way back over to the mirror to check her makeup. A little lipstick later, Briar could finally relax. She sat down on the edge of the bed and gave Ruby's foot a squeeze, "I hope she behaves...." Not that there was any real reason to be worried. But if she was fussy, Elliott was usually much better at making her happy and he'd be kind of busy shaking hands and making smalltalk.

"Sure thing!" Elliott called back as he pulled the dress out of the closet and slung Ruby's 'casual' diaper bag over his shoulder. He stopped at the hall closet, rummaged around for a moment, and then found the other bag and added it to his shoulder.

He came back into their bedroom, handed Ruby's dress to Briar, and sat beside her on the bed and shifted the bags over to his lap and started switching things over. He glanced over his shoulder and smiled fondly at Ruby. "She'll be fine." He wasn't too worried. If she decided to throw a fit, well, she was a baby. Babies did that sometimes. But she was napping so well now, he was sure she'd manage for two hours.

"She's a pretty good kid ... probably doesn't get that from me," she observed, smiling too. Briar got Ruby dressed in record time; it was much easier to get her into a dress when she wasn't squirming away. She picked her up and started rubbing circles on her back to ease her into being awake- it wouldn't be pretty if apparating was what woke her up. She leaned over to kiss Elliott, suddenly realizing she hadn't even really said hello yet. "Are you nervous?" It was only a benefit, there was nothing much to be nervous about. But still, it was crucial that even the very small events were treated like important ones. If he wasn't reelected, well, she tried not to think about that. It felt like bad luck.

Elliott was about to remark that it certainly hadn't been from him, but managed to close his mouth before he said it. The funny thing was that he hadn't even been thinking about the fact that he wasn't biologically related to Ruby. He was just thinking about how energetic he was as a kid. His mother had been fabulous at channeling his energies into constructive activities; he supposed she would have made a rather rubbish child psychologist if she hadn't been, though.

He smiled into Briar's kiss and shrugged at her question. "I always am a bit, I suppose, but I'm so good at faking otherwise that I hardly notice."

Briar smiled and shook her head, then kissed him again. "You are very convincing," she confirmed, wiping a smudge of lipstick from the corner of his mouth with her thumb. She wanted to say more, but she was nervous, too, and not as good at hiding it. Which meant she wouldn't be able to come up with anything useful to say to reassure him.

Luckily, Ruby chose that moment to finally wake herself up. She looked startled, then drowsily let her head fall back onto Briar's shoulder. For a minute, it looked like she might cry, but instead she just rubbed her eyes and reached silently for Elliott. Briar smoothed her hair, which was sticking up everywhere, "Could you hold her, just for the apparating." Briar hated apparating. Hated. She didn't think she'd ever get used to it. It made her panic, and Ruby always seemed to sense that, which made it much harder to calm her down. If she wasn't holding her, maybe it would be easier.
