He shrugged. "It clearly didn't bother me," he said with a smile. He was a pretty deep sleeper, too. "I'll try to condition myself to fight harder for them in the future." |

"Not a chance, weakling. You were going to fight to keep me in bed, too, remember?" she teased, "And look how well that turned out for you." |

He laughed. "I think I forgot to even try. I had other things on my mind," he teased back. "Speaking of other things," he sat up, "didn't we get a letter last night?" |

She shook her head, "Excuses, excuses." Her smile fell when he reminded her about the letter. It was only - well, she didn't know what time, exactly, but too early to deal with that. She freed her other arm, sighed, and rubbed her eyes. "No, I think it's just for me." She always kept her wand with her while she was sleeping, no matter where she was. She grabbed it and brought the letter flying through the air to land on her lap. She sat up and leaned her back against the wall, brushing her fingers over the red seal. "I'd be extremely surprised if my parents knew I was with you," she elaborated, looking at him, then back to the letter. It was the guilt that was making it so difficult for her to open it. She very rarely regretted anything she did, mainly because she only did things for herself. And because she'd never hurt anyone before. But this had possibly been the meanest thing she'd ever done, and she didn't want to face it. She took a deep breath and turned the scroll end over end in her hands. "I didn't say goodbye," she explained quietly. "When I left the castle, I didn't say goodbye to my family." Contrary to popular belief, it didn't feel better to admit it. |

Charlie sat up against the wall with her. He was a little shocked to know that her parents didn't know she was living with him. He hadn't expected her to ask permission- they were of age, after all- but he hadn't thought that she wouldn't tell them. His parents knew. He'd written his mother a letter and his father had actually been somewhat weirdly proud that he was all grown up and living on his own. He was the reason he'd gotten in at the Ministry- he was sure of it. He sighed and put his arm around her shoulder when she said she didn't say goodbye. "Oh, Ada..." he started, but wasn't sure how to finish. It was a supremely bad decision on her part, but he was sure she didn't need to hear that just then. "You should tell them where you are," not that she could say exactly where she was; the fidelius charm did not allow for that. But she could generalize, and say who she was with. "They're probably just worried." Plus, he hadn't exactly sworn his parents to secrecy and not that they would talk about him all that much, but 'What's your kid doing after graduation?' was bound to be a common topic and word would get out and he didn't want to be accosted my any member of her family while he was at work (the only place they'd be able to find him on purpose, really). |

Ada didn't move closer to him when he put his arm around her, but she didn't push him away, either. She liked to be alone when she was trying to process things, but there was nowhere in the flat to be alone. She nodded when he said they were probably just worried, even though she doubted that was true; they'd never been worried about her, as far as she could tell. She didn't feel like disagreeing with him right now, though. It would only lead to an argument, and she didn't want him to think this had anything to do with him, because it didn't. Instead she tried to explain. "I didn't mean to- to not say goodbye. I went to see them before we left, but when I got there..." it was hard to explain, because nothing had really happened. "They just looked, you know... happy. They looked really happy. So I left." She felt suddenly like she might cry. So she did what she always did when she had feelings she didn't want to deal with: she ignored it. She stood up, tossed the unopened letter back on the desk, and, after a bit of searching, located her pajamas. She threw them on quickly, and turned back to Charlie while she put her hair up in a high bun. "Tea?" she asked, as if it were not a complete non sequitur. |

He really, really empathized with her about her family looking happy without her. He'd seen the Christmas card photo with his mother, step-dad, and half-siblings this year even though he was sure he wasn't meant to. He wasn't in it and they were all smiling and red-haired and belonged perfectly. It looked better without his brown hair and awkward waving and shifting eyes. He wanted to tell her that he knew, that he understood. But she got up so quickly and asked about tea and he didn't know how. He blinked at the sudden shift and scratched the top of his head. "Uh, sure." |

She was already halfway out the door by the time he answered, so she didn't notice his confusion. She went to the kitchen and put the kettle on, then sat down to wait. She crossed her arms over her stomach and leaned forward to rest her forehead on the edge of the table, feeling a little badly for not trying harder to explain. She didn't want to keep him at a distance, but talking about her family meant feeling too many things at once, and that wasn't something she was good at handling. "It's bad luck to start the day without tea," she posited. |
