Saturday, May 14, 2039. 5:50 am. Trent opened his eyes and found his daughter staring at him, only inches away from his face. "You okay, Bug?" he asked, speaking quietly, as he sat up on the couch and opened his arms up to her. Benjamin was asleep in a travel crib beside the couch. They were sill at Cassie's place. Hogsmeade wasn't safe anymore. It was like one giant target- 'Here be Wizards'- and he wouldn't risk it. And Cassie was a great help. He knew they couldn't stay forever, but 'for now' was fine. Natalie shrugged noncommittally, but climbed into his lap anyway. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. He remembered something as he became more awake. "Hey, did you remember? It's your birthday today." He smiled down at her. She nodded up at him. She had been counting down the days since the beginning of the month. But she wasn't sure what to feel about it anymore. "I was going to bring you your birthday doughnut in bed. Do you want it now?" It was quite early. But he didn't blame her for having trouble sleeping. She was so like her mother, though- fiercely independent- she hadn't wanted to share a bed with him or anyone else. She'd never been one for nightmares, anyway, and she wasn't even having them now. She just didn't sleep as long as she should. She shrugged in answer. He rubbed her back and kept trying. "Your gran sent a book over last night that she read to me when I was six. Would you like me to read you something from it?" "Okay," she could let him do that. She was always interested in things her parents had when they were little. Trent reached over to the end table with one hand and grabbed the book, then flipped it open and riffled through until he found what he was looking for. "When I was One, I had just begun. When I was Two, I was nearly new. When I was Three I was hardly me. When I was Four, I was not much more. When I was Five, I was just alive. But now I am Six, I'm as clever as clever, So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever. " Natalie smirked up at him. "I am pretty clever," she declared. Trent laughed. There was the little girl he knew; his smart-alec smirking girl. "Alright, clever girl, you read me one next." She flipped through the book and decided on 'Fury Bear.' She read it aloud to him, and only needed help on a few big words. She shut the book and turned, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Being six is alright, I guess," she told him, smiling shyly this time. "Being six is fantastic!" he promised, still trying to keep his voice quiet so he wouldn't wake Benjamin. She rolled her eyes at him. "You didn't stay six forever and ever," she accused. "Not on purpose," he teased. She sighed and bit her lip. "I just didn't want to be six without Mummy," she confessed. Trent wrapped her in his arms and held her tight. "Oh, Lady-Bug, Mummy is happy that you're six; I know she is." Natalie buried her face in his neck. "Isn't she sad that she's not here? I'm sad she's not here." "Of course! Of course she wants to be here." He kissed her head and shut his eyes tight for one brief moment. He ran his hand over her long brown hair; so like Marie's. "But she would want you to be happy on your birthday, I know it. She would want you to be happy, because knowing you're happy makes her feel happy." She thought about this for a moment. "I can be happy to be six and sad Mummy's gone at the same time." From the mouths of babes... he kissed her head again. "You absolutely can. I'm sad about Mummy, too, but I am so, so happy that you are safe here with me." She loosened her grip and pecked him on the cheek. "I think I'm like Mummy. I feel happy when you're happy, too, Daddy." He smiled at her. "I feel happy when you're happy, too." She grinned and let go of his neck. "Birthday doughnuts make me happy." He laughed and stood up with her in his arms and went into the kitchen for a birthday doughnut. |
