25 January 2039 Thursday 6:37 “Do you want to go in?” Penelope asked, as PJ craned her neck to get one last look in the shop window. “No. Of course not,” PJ said a little too quickly, shaking her head. “PJ, that’s the third children’s store you’ve almost broken your neck looking at.” “One was a toy store,” PJ argued. Penelope rolled her eyes at her. PJ knew that her sister was right. She didn’t have much of a case. “Baby fever?” Penny asked with a sympathetic smile. “I was sort of hoping that we would be back at your place for this,” PJ admitted. The logical part of her knew that this was a really bad idea. Her head had known better than to drag a child into the mess that was their life together. She shouldn’t have gotten pregnant but she was, and she couldn’t be anything but happy about it. On some level and for some reason that she couldn’t define, it was absolutely right. She just knew. And Colin knew. And he was every bit as happy as she was. Penny was all head, though, and she couldn’t care less if Colin was happy. PJ had no idea how her sister would react. She wanted her to be happy for them, or at least for her. Actually, she wanted her to go to their next appointment, but she hadn’t run it by Colin. There was no point if this went badly. “For what,” she asked cautiously, but PJ smiled. “Telling you I’m pregnant,” she said beaming. “You too?” Penny asked, unable to come up with an appropriate response due to her surprise. “Yeah. I’m about three weeks behind M‘Kenzie, not quite, though,” PJ explained, laughing at her sister’s response. “Congratulations,” she said forcing a smile and trying to sound upbeat. PJ figured there was a touch of disapproval counter behind it. The middle of the sidewalk wasn’t the best place for this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Penny walked in and put her shopping bags on the kitchen counter. “Want something to drink before you go?” she asked. “Penny?” PJ asked, ignoring her question. Something was bothering her. “Yeah?” she asked, shutting the refrigerator and leaning on the counter opposite PJ. “Listen, I know you weren’t real excited earlier, but you’re important to me. I want the baby to be close to you, too. I know Colin’s not your favorite person, but if you could just get past that-“ “You mean you thought,” Penny shook her head. “That’s fine. I mean, that has nothing to do with anything.” “What then?’ “Nothing. I’m happy.” “Not really.” “Look, just drop it, alright?” “No it’s not alright! I want my favorite sister to be a little excited about this with me, and she won’t even tell me what’s bothering her.” “Maybe I’m tired of being an aunt, okay?” she snapped. PJ looked aghast. “How can you get tired of that?” she asked, shock all through her voice. That was like getting tired of Christmas. Penelope shook her head. That wasn’t exactly what she meant, even if it was what she said. PJ didn’t get it. “Maybe I want to be the mum for once!” Penelope snapped though her voice was low. She looked away. PJ stared at her for a minute, unsure of what to do, then stepped around the counter. She put her hand on Penny’s shoulder, but Penny shrugged it off. She tried again and Penelope let her, though she fiddled with the hem of her sweater and refused to look up. “And Paul doesn’t want that, too?” she asked softly. Penelope shook her head. “That’s not it. It just… it just hasn’t happened,” she said as her voice cracked. PJ put both arms around her. “How long?” “Long enough that I’m worried, but not long enough to actually see somebody about it,” she said, trying to be vague. She actually knew to the day. “And we were all just teasing you,” PJ realized, berating herself in her head. “About not knowing how. Yeah. I remember.” It wasn’t exactly the highlight of her Christmas holiday. “I am so sorry.” “Don’t tell anyone,” Penelope asked, he voice pleading. “I won’t. Promise.” |
