Tuesday, December 14, 2038. 5:15 pm. "Thank God you're here!" The voice of Eoin greeted Alex as soon as he stepped inside the door and into their flat. "I, uh, generally leave that up to my mother- thanking God for my existence. Seems sort of self-serving to do it myself," Alex replied to Eoin nonchalantly as he hung up his coat on the rack. "Haha, you're hilarious," Eoin said, annoyed. "Listen: you know about babies, right?" Alex finally turned around and noticed that Eoin was holding his red-headed niece, Ruby. Ruby did not look happy; she was squirming and grunting and flailing her arms at him. He did know about babies. He had a nephew that he'd spent a lot of time with when he was a baby. This was not a happy baby. "What'd you do to her?" Alex accused. On a list of everyone he knew ranked by how much he would trust them alone with a baby, Eoin was last. Dead last. No contest. "Nothing!" Eoin protested, shifting Ruby to his other arm in the vain hope that, all along, resting against the wrong arm was the problem. "And just how long have you been doing nothing to her?" Alex asked as he rounded the couch to stand in front of Eoin with his arms crossed. Eoin rolled his eyes at him. "Be serious!" It's a strange request, coming from Eoin. "I am being serious. How long has she been fussing at you while you just sit there?" Eoin scowled. Alex did this a lot. This, 'I'm going to explain how you're wrong in the form of a question that makes you look like a bleeding idiot' thing. All the time. Condescending prick. And it wasn't like he hadn't tried things. They just hadn't worked. "I don't know!" Eoin whined without thinking. "Kevin dropped her off and said he'd been just about to feed her, so I did instead, and she was fine and then she wasn't and nothing is making her happy again!" he finished his tirade with a huff. And then, "Twenty minutes, I guess." "Did you burp her?" "What?" Eoin gave him an incredulous look, as though Alex had suggested that Eoin should actually burp on Ruby. "Just- give her to me," Alex said as he uncrossed his arms and reached down for baby Ruby. Eoin gave her up reluctantly because he was still mad at Alex for being a prick even though he knew his prickish ways were probably going to make Ruby happy again. Alex settled Ruby against his shoulder and she started crying then. "Your making it worse," Eoin couldn't help being a little smug. "No, see, her tiny belly has so much air trapped inside that it actually hurts her now that there's pressure on it," Alex said over the crying and the light thumping noise his hand made while patting Ruby's back. "Did she come with a bag?" he asked while searching the room. "Behind the couch," at least Eoin knew the answer to that question. Alex took two long strides and, yes, Ruby spit up on him before he could get to it anyway. But she traded crying for whimpering afterward, and that made him smile as he shifted her over to his clean shoulder. "How did you end up with Ruby right now anyway?" He decided to be conversational as he searched for a burp cloth. "By being the only one available." "You could have called someone when you couldn't figure out what was wrong." He pulled a yellow floral patterned burp cloth out of the nappy bag and dabbed up the majority of the spit up from his shoulder. "Once again: only one available." "Not even for phone advice?" he asked as she shifted Ruby back over, on top of the burp cloth now. He'd done it again. The 'I'm questioning your intelligence with common sense' thing. "...Didn't think of it," Eoin admitted. Yeah, he was kind of an idiot sometimes. "Your mum's a pediatrician," Alex deadpanned as he came back around and sat on the couch. "Didn't think of it," Eoin repeated. "Yeah, alright, well, good job." Alex traded patting Ruby for patting Eoin for two pats, then switched back. Ruby burped again, sans spit-up this time, and Alex switched from patting to rubbing. "So, she's good?" Eoin asked, genuinely concerned. "Well, she'll probably need a new nappy as well." "Ugh, seriously? What time is it?" "It's about-" "Wait, what day is it?" "Do you really not know?" "I lose track when I have a few days off in a row. It's either sometime after Wednesday or sometime before. Or actually Wednesday." Eoin always had Wednesdays off because the restaurant was closed then. He liked to group his days off in a row, so that meant grouping by Wednesdays. It made perfect sense to him. It just sounded incredibly stupid they way he'd just said it. "Well, sounds like you've narrowed it down to one of about seven days, then." "I wish you didn't work weekends sometimes; that would make it easier to guess. Or you could just tell me and I wouldn't have to guess," Eoin said as he attempted to figure out what day it was by counting on his fingers. "It's Tuesday. You've gone the whole day blissfully unaware, why do you need to suddenly know now?" "I'm trying to figure out of Jane is coming over. She might do this nappy change thing if she does." Alex rolled his eyes. "You are a horrible boyfriend." "Well, that's good, because I don't think I ever agreed to be anyone's boyfriend." Alex gave him a look that clearly said 'really?!' "Fine. You're a horrible human being." Eoin grinned. "Yes, that's much more accurate." Alex shook his head and passed Ruby back to Eoin. "Change her," he told him sternly, "while I go change my shirt." "Boooooo," Eoin pouted as he accepted Ruby back into his arms. He scrunched his nose at her. Babies were more trouble than they were worth. Still, he got up to change her and Alex went upstairs to change his shirt. ((Briar and Jane, feel free to show up at any point after this.)) |

It was Tuesday and Jane was indeed coming over, in fact, she was just making her way up the steps to Eoin's flat. It wouldn't have surprised her, however, to know that Eoin had forgotten, she had long since gotten used to his unique way of viewing the week. When she let herself in she was greeted with the bizarre sight of Eoin handling a baby, not something she saw everyday. It was clear from the red hair on the child's head that this was Ruby, but Jane was still surprised to see the baby in Eoin's arms. He appeared to be attempting to change her, again, not something Jane was used to seeing. "Shouldn't Briar be doing that?" Jane said, as she entered, too surprised to offer so much as a "hello." She had automatically assumed that no one would have left a baby in the care of Eoin alone and that Briar was probably just around the corner in the next room. She wasn't even entirely sure of the situation posed more of a threat to the baby or to Eoin, both seemed in a precarious state. |

"HA!" Eoin responded, not at all surprised by Jane's presence. Ruby was smiling now, happily kicking her feet at him as she laid on her changing mat. Eoin had a new diaper tucked under his chin and he was trying to hold Ruby's feet down, but she was too squirmy. And super strong, apparently. "Briar isn't here," he informed Jane. "Would you like to have a go at it?" he asked as he wrestled with Ruby's legs. Ruby giggled at him and waved her arms. |

Jane was actually quite good with children and babies, not that she would have readily admitted it to herself or anyone else. She had always seen herself as the too fun aunt that the kids likes but their parents slightly disapproved of. Though that was true in some cases, she also had pretty good instincts when it came to young children and the experience from her niece and nephews to put it to work. When she saw Eoin struggling with Ruby those instincts kicked it. "Here," she said laughing, butting Eoin out of the way playfully with her hip. She took the diaper that he had been storing under his chin and gave him a quick kiss as she did so. "I'll take that thank you," she said, and set to work. Ruby had turned the entire process into a game, which Jane played along with, tickling her and cooing as she changed her diaper. Once Jane had finished she picked up Ruby who immediately latched onto her hair. "Here, you can be helpful." She said, nodding at the neatly wrapped up dirty diaper and flashing Eoin a grin. "Where are all the responsible adults anyway?" Jane asked, trying to distract Ruby from her hair, which she was now putting in her mouth, with one of the toys from the bag. |

"The responsible adults got spit up on and had to go change," Alex answered from the bottom of the stairs as he made his way over to the living room. He was now in a light blue and white checked button down and blue jeans. He saw Jane holding Ruby in front of the changing pad and could hardly believe that Eoin had actually got his way. "I can't believe you had her change that nappy. You're a child," he accused Eoin, shaking his head. He turned to Jane. "I don't know how you put up with him. Never mind; yes I do. I do it all the time. But I actually have to. You have a choice- that's what's so mind-boggling." "Hahaha," Eoin faked laughed for, what, the third time in a span of five minutes? "Look," he said, and picked up the discarded nappy. "I'm going to toss the old one like a responsible adult." He walked to the kitchen to throw it away. "What progress," Alex deadpanned, rolling his eyes. He turned to Jane again. "It's good to see you," he told her with a smile. "Sorry if this is putting a wrench in your plans." He knew Eoin didn't necessarily know about any plans, but that didn't mean their weren't any. And Alex was always a gentleman, even if Eoin wasn't. |

"Oh, I manage." Jane responded to Alex with a cheeky grin on her face. Eoin didn't seem too amused but Jane still found it funny. "His pretty face makes it bearable." She teased. Jane shrugged at Alex's apology, she wasn't one to make stringent plans, especially in the middle of a work week. "Nah, it's fine, couldn't be helped. Honestly, I'm glad I got here in time, Eoin might've been hurt." She looked down at Ruby, "Right? You very vicious creature." Ruby was sucking on the toy now and simply looked up at Jane with large eyes. "Anyway, how've you been?" She asked Alex. |

Alex laughed when Jane called Ruby a vicious creature. Cutest vicious creature he'd ever seen. He shrugged when she asked how he'd been. He wasn't the best at small talk. "Same old, same old, yeah? What about you? See any dragons recently?" It was still hard to believe, but undeniably cool. Eoin took that moment to return from the kitchen. "Psh, they've got her good and chained to a desk like you," he commented. He held out his hands to Ruby. "Hey there little bird, all happy now?" |

It was still slightly disconcerting to have Alex ask about the magical world. Eoin was one thing, but Jane still didn't know Alex that well and it was a bit strange to have him know after spending so long making up a fake back story for herself. It didn't make her uncomfortable exactly, that was what she was fighting for after all. "Unfortunately Eoin's right." Jane answered. "The Ministry isn't nearly as exciting as the reservations are, though undeniably there is less chance of loss of limb when you're chained to a desk." Jane disentangled herself from Ruby handed the baby into Eoin's open arms. |

"God ... I hope Alex is home." She didn't have to explain why. It was the first thing she'd said since they'd gotten in the car, but in the silence her disappointment was palpable. This was the first date she and Elliott had had in weeks, and Kevin's unpredictable schedule had cut the night short. They hadn't even made it to dinner when Kevin called. It wasn't the first time he'd had to drop Ruby off early, but it was the first time she'd had to resort to calling Eoin to watch the baby, and that she didn't like. She already hated being away from the baby, and the fact that she was with her somewhat clueless uncle didn't make Briar feel any better. They parked on the street and she kissed Elliott gently before getting out of the car, "I'm sorry, Fix. He promised-" She cut herself off before she said anything negative about her ex, and just forced a smile instead. Briar knocked once, but didn't wait for an answer before she pushed into her twin's flat. "I'm so sorry, we got here as fast as we could." She felt like she'd been apologizing a lot lately. She took Ruby from Eoin and kissed the top of her head, "I hope this didn't ruin your plans, Eoin didn't say you were here," she added, smiling softly at Jane. |

"Fine, yes, I was all done bonding with my niece; you take her then," Eoin teased as Briar took Ruby out of his hands. He took a coin out of his pocket and walked it across the fingers of his right hand instead. "Eoin didn't even know what day it was until I told him," Alex quipped when Briar told Jane she hoped she wasn't ruining any plans. Eoin shot him a dark look and chucked his coin at him. "Hey!" Alex protested as it bounced off his shoulder. Eoin leaned down and caught it in his left hand and immediately went back to walking it across his finger. Elliott laughed. "I never wanted a brother," Eoin told him sourly. It only made Elliott laugh harder. "I'm going to object at your wedding. It's going to be awful having you in the family. Marriage should be abolished, anyhow. It's all very silly," Eoin was only half joking. "I'm touched, Eoin. I know that came from the very bottom of your cold, dead heart," Elliott said as he rolled his eyes, then put his arm around Briar and kissed the top of Ruby's head. "That's why Hart is my middle name," Eoin quipped as he caught the coin. He vanished it, then caught Jane around her waist and pulled her down with him onto the couch. He leaned his face close to Jane's and grinned. "Have we got plans or are we sticking with this lot?" he asked her. "We've got sort of an event happening now, haven't we?" he asked the rest of the room. |

"No, no, these are your plans. This is definitely an event," Briar agreed enthusiastically. "We've got a few hours until Ruby needs to be in bed," she added. She looked up at Elliott, pleading with him silently -and probably unnecessarily- and shifted the baby onto her hip, leading him to the love-seat with her now-free hand. She needed to be somewhere other than her house for a few hours, even if all that meant was sitting around at Eoin's. To avoid too much stress, she'd decided to wait until after the holidays to go back to work, but having so much free time at home was nearly driving her to drink - something she unfortunately still couldn't do. Briar leaned against Elliott, holding Ruby so she could look out at everyone. |
