Thursday, September 30, 2038. 4:15 pm. Eoin was sitting on his sister's couch, his niece held against his shoulder. She was sleeping. He was leaning into the couch heavily and feeling very relaxed indeed. "I think this one's a keeper," he told his sister, smiling. Eoin was much more reasonable now that Ruby was no longer inside his sister. This he could deal with. This was good. |

Briar returned the smile from the armchair beside the couch. "Well that's easy for you to say, isn't it. She's so sweet when she's sleeping. Usually it's not until around the fourth time she's woken me up that I wish I'd kept the receipt." That wasn't entirely true. Briar hated having her sleep interrupted under any circumstances. The only difference was that that feeling wore off after a few minutes of holding her daughter. She was starting to look forward to the time she spent with Ruby when no one else was awake. She figured it would probably be much different if she were waking up in the morning to work, but she didn't have to, at least not yet. |

Eoin smirked at that. He might have laughed, but he didn't want to accidentally wake up the baby. "Yeah, I talked to Elliott yesterday. He sounded like a wreck. I don't think he's sleeping at all." It wasn't just a lack of sleep that had Elliott on edge. He told Eoin about asking Briar to marry him. The fact that she still hadn't given him an answer was eating him alive. Eoin tilted his head slightly as he considered his twin. He really, really didn't understand her sometimes. Wasn't that exactly what she wanted? Wasn't she upset when Elliott wanted to wait to have the wedding until after Ruby was born? What had changed? Maybe something neither of them was telling him. Eoin was glad he was set on never getting married. He was never going to have this problem. |

"He stayed at his flat last night. I'm sure he slept fine there," she stated simply in response. She knew he hadn't been getting much rest with the baby crying all night, but being sleep-deprived was pretty much the definition of new parents. Briar had kind of expected to have Elliott around; one night without him had made her feel completely alone. The (somewhat small, recently) rational part of her knew he needed to sleep to function at work, but she was still hurt. |

"Seriously?" Eoin replayed his conversation with Elliott in his head, making sure he didn't say anything that could be misconstrued as 'obviously my sister no longer cares about you; give up now.' Nope, nothing but encouragement. Or as encouraging as Eoin got, anyway. As far as Eoin was concerned, Elliott and Briar were both being incredibly stupid. "That man is a fucking coward, and you're a bleeding idiot." "I can't believe he asked you to marry him and you didn't give him a fucking answer. And he's such a ball-less tosser he won't talk to you about it. He's not just losing sleep over the baby, Briar- he thinks you might actually reject him." |

Briar stared at her brother for a moment. Her first instinct was to tell him to watch his language; babies absorb all kinds of things, or at least that's what the books said. Her second was to defend Elliott. Instead she laughed. Because honestly, the thought of Elliott actually being worried about her turning him down was ridiculous. "Right." Her smile fell almost as quickly. "How could he even think that? I chose him, didn't I?" She set her mug down on the coffee table and raked her fingers back through her hair. "I mean, Jesus Christ, I'm sorry I wasn't functional enough to accept his proposal fifteen minutes after I'd pushed a child out of my-" she stopped and threw up her hands in frustration, pressing her fingertips to her eyelids. |

Eoin scoffed, rolling his eyes. He didn't mean to get Briar so worked up. Okay, maybe a little worked up. Nevertheless, he was still relaxing with his adorable niece, and his tone portrayed nothing different. "No, you didn't choose him. From what I heard you choose-'this isn't good enough for me.' But that's just his side of the story. All I know is that it's been about 1,157,760 minutes since then, so the 'I just pushed a baby out' excuse doesn't really hold up anymore." "Look, I'm not accusing you of anything sinister here," he told her gently. "I'm just saying- you're both fuck ups and you need to do something about it before you're really fucked. That's all." |

"I shouldn't have waited to begin with, but once I did, it's been hard to find the right time." Briar chewed on the corner of her thumbnail and stared across the room. There probably wasn't a right time anymore, but she wasn't quite ready to give up on it yet. Unless .... When she looked back at Eoin, her eyebrows were knitted together in concern, "You don't think he'll change his mind do you? Take back the ring once I say yes, I mean?" Elliott had done enough stupid and rash things in his life that she had to at least consider that possibility, as stupid as it sounded once she said it. |

"Don't be ridiculous; he wouldn't take it back if you said 'yes,'" Eoin rolled his eyes. He then cocked his head to the side, seeming to consider his words. "He might if you continue to wait, though. Elliott's not patient- he fakes it pretty well most of the time, but it sounded like he is quite literally driving himself mad. He did something he was certain would yield the result he wanted- you agreeing to marry him- and it didn't. So now he's questioning everything. Maybe you don't want him after all, or maybe you don't want to be a family, or maybe you decided he'd make a horrible father, or maybe you decided you'll find someone better. I honestly don't know- he told me a lot of crap, but he was all over the place. I tried to be encouraging or whatever, but I'm not all that great at it." |

Briar rolled her eyes back at him in response to his not being encouraging or whatever. "Obviously." She didn't say anything else for a second, then added, "I guess I'd better hurry up and say yes, then." |

Eoin sighed and returned her eye roll. He put his hand on Ruby's back and stood up from the couch and crossed over to Briar. He leaned over and kissed her cheek. "If that's what you want. I'm not trying to pressure you into marrying him- you know that's not really my thing. I think you just owe him an answer either way. Do what makes you happy. I'll love you forever; no matter what." He smiled at her, then handed her daughter back over to her. He reached out and tugged on a bit of her hair. "Don't kill yourself thinking about it. And you know I'm much better at encouraging you than I am anyone else, so call me, yeah? I'm still bad at getting really emotional, though, so I'm gonna leave." He ruffed up her hair and couldn't help smirking for a second, then turned to walk away. His smirk softened back into a smile. He turned around and walked backward. "I'm serious about you calling, though. Even if it's two seconds from now. I'm trying for character growth here," his voice was teasing, but Briar would know he was sincere. He blew a kiss to both her and Ruby, and then he left. |
