Tuesday, September 28, 2038. 4:45 pm. Charlie nearly toppled over as the weight of another human collided with his back; arms wrapped around his neck and legs fastened themselves securely around his waist. His arms automatically held onto the legs, lest he be dragged down onto the floor. Though this particular event was unexpected, it wasn't like it was anything out of the ordinary. "Can't you just say 'hi' and wave like a normal person?" Charlie exasperated as he tried to look over his shoulder at Zoe Beckett. She threw her head back and laughed, as if the idea was preposterous. "No way! This is too much fun. Giddy up!" she said as she leaned forward and bounced, urging him on. "I liked you better before we were friends," Charlie lamented. "You were nicer before you learned how to talk to girls," Zoe returned, sliding off his back when she realized he wasn't going to continue walking. "You only have yourself to blame for that," Charlie said as he crouched to let her off, then stood up and fixed his shirt collar. "I'm honored," she bowed. Charlie smirked. "Look at that!" she pointed at his face. "I take full responsibility for that as well. Charlie Gray- smirking! Ha!" Zoe grabbed his hand and started off down the corridor. "You haven't met my father," Charlie told her. Peter Gray, as it turned out, was the king of sarcasm and cynical wit. He almost always smirked instead of smiled. Charlie hadn't understood it growing up, and between Hogwarts and living with his mother most of the time, hadn't really been exposed to it in his adolescence. He got a crash course in it when he moved in with his father after being kicked out of his step-father's house. After spending the entire summer with the man he was pretty certain he'd become well versed in the art. "Is that an invitation?" Zoe's eyes practically sparked at the thought. "No!" Charlie answered quickly and forcefully. He realized she was still holding his hand and pulled it away. "Jesus, have a heart attack already," Zoe rolled her eyes and walked on ahead. "Zoe!" he called after her. She kept walking. He sighed, then jogged to catch up."Come on," he pleaded. As annoying as he often found Zoe, she was actually his best friend. In a very, very weird way. Or maybe all best friend relationships were this weird. He didn't know- this was is first one. "You don't really want to meet my dad," he reasoned. "Why not? You've met mine," she countered. It was true. Charlie had been over at the Beckett household a lot during the summer. It was just more convenient- Charlie could Apparate and Zoe couldn't. Plus, Charlie didn't feel comfortable inviting people over to his dad's house. He knew his dad wouldn't care, but... it just didn't feel like home. Only Hogwarts really did now, and this was his last year. "Yeah, but not because I wanted to. I mean- just because he was there! I didn't make any special effort or... you know, I don't mean it to sound like this at all." "Like you're a giant prick?" she offered. "Yeah, that," Charlie sighed. Zoe hugged his arm and leaned her head against his bicep. "Well, luckily for you, I know your not one." She sighed wistfully. "I just get carried away sometimes. I feel like the more I try to get to know you, the more mysterious you are." Charlie looked down at her incredulously, shaking his head. "I am not mysterious," he insisted. "Believe me; no one knows me like you do." She grinned up at him. "That just solidifies my point! I know you better than anyone else and yet I still feel like I have so much to learn. You are mysterious. Don't worry; it's a good thing. Most girls find it very attractive." He did his best to fight a blush as he led them into the library. "You're the only one," he tried to deflect. "That finds you attractive? Doubt it. I think I just scare the rest of them off," she told him casually. Charlie broke out into a coughing fit, having nearly choked on his own spit. When he'd said she was the 'only one,' he'd meant the only one who thought he was mysterious- not attractive. "What?!" he managed. Zoe pulled him down an isle to keep him from attracting the attention of the librarian. "Charlie," she let go of him and crossed her arms. "You're not seriously that dense." He stared at her, slack jawed. "Oh, God, you are!" She thumped his chest. "What?!" he said again, this time in protest. "How was I supposed to know?!" he was, sadly, genuinely clueless. He was blushing furiously now- he couldn't help it. "You're hopeless, Charlie Gray; completely hopeless." She shook her head, but couldn't help smiling. "I spend most of my free time with you." "That's what friends do!" he protested fiercely. "I touch you every time you're in my reach," she stepped closer to him. "That's what girls do?" he was less sure of himself now, and blushed deeper. She shook her head. "I told your sister I was going to marry you." "That was a joke," defended weakly. She shrugged and lifted her left hand to hold onto the bookcase behind his right shoulder. She opened her mouth to reply, but Charlie beat her to it. "You said 'probably.'" Zoe raised an eyebrow at him. "What?" It was her turn to be confused. "You told Sorry that you were probably going to marry me." Was that a hit of smugness in his tone? His blush was fading and he looked less surprised and more serious. Zoe laughed and rested her left foot on the first shelf off the floor. "Well, you can't expect a girl to be certain about everything at fifteen years old." "You were certain we'd be best friends," he returned quickly. "I'll always be certain of that," she promised. "What if..." Zoe put her right index finger on his lips, silencing him. She pulled herself up so that she nearly eye level with Charlie, sanding on the shelf with her left foot and her right hanging in the air. "Always." She moved her right hand to his left shoulder to help support her weight. "Even if kissing you turns out to be a terrible idea." And before he could stop her, she did just that. |
