Due to lack of interest, tomorrow is canceled. Let the clocks be reset and the pendulums held.

The air circulating through the car smelled like Briar’s shampoo. Her hand was on the keys in the ignition, but she didn’t turn them even though it didn’t look like the rain was letting up anytime soon and she wanted badly to be inside. Something made her stop.

’Cause there’s nothing at all except the space in between finding out what you’re called and repeating your name.

The baby moved slightly and Briar smiled, rubbing her hand over her stomach.

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby. Do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya, know what you’re doing doing to me?

She felt the baby roll again and she smiled in surprise, cutting the power to the radio and pushing open her door to brave the storm. She slammed the door behind her, hardly able to hear the ‘beep’ of the lock over a sudden crash of thunder. Briar hurried up the walk as quickly as she could and burst into the house, beaming.

“Elliott!” she called, shaking some of the rain out of her hair and patting Kryptonite on the head, still looking impossibly happy. “Elliott!”

Elliott nearly ran out of the bedroom at the sound of Briar's voice. He had the overnight bag in his left hand and a very concerned look on his face. "Briar!" he responded. "I thought you'd be here a lot sooner." He stopped in front of her and dropped the bag and cupped her face in his hands instead. "I'm so glad you're here." He gave her a quick peck. "Now lets go- I've got everything," he said as he took his hands away and picked the bag up again.

She shrugged off her trench coat and let it fall to the floor in front of the door. She ignored him, too caught up in what she was trying to say. "I know her name! I was in the car, and there was this song playing on the radio, and then I just ... knew. Well, she knew, I guess." Briar pressed her hand to his chest, still beaming, "Ruby Grace. It's perfect, isn't it?"

"It's great!" he enthused as much as he could while freaking out. "Great- just in time to meet her," he said as he bent down picked her coat up off the floor. "Probably you've just ensured a full head of red hair with that," he pulled the coat around her shoulders. "Which is perfect. She'll be beautiful. Lets go make sure," he turned her around by the shoulders so she was facing the door to leave.

Briar blinked when she found herself facing the door. She turned back to him, noticing how worried he looked for the first time. She'd been too excited to see it right away. She reached up and cupped his his cheeks in her hands, speaking as soothingly as she could manage, "Elliott, we can't leave yet, they'll just tell us to go home." She smiled up at him fondly, "For now, I'm going to take a shower and try to lie down for a while. Maybe you should try to take a nap, it's going to be a long night. Alright?" She wasn't exactly as calm as she seemed to be, but she was not about to spend the next however many hours miserable in a plastic waiting room chair, not when she was still able to behave rationally.

He shook his head in her hands. "Alright," he took a breath. "We don't have to leave right now." He put his hands over hers. "But I won't- I can't sleep. I have to do something." He pulled her hands away from his face and held them against his chest. "Have you called your parents? What about Eoin? The OB? Kevin? I just- I've got to do something. I'm very bad at being patient. I'm sorry."

"I called the OB as soon as the contractions started. I was kind of freaking out. And I called my parents before I left work. But I didn't think we needed to worry Eoin quite yet, you know how he gets. I can't ... I don't want to have to think about Kevin today." She looked briefly pained at the idea of having to talk to Kevin, but then it was actual pain. She remembered to check her watch even as she fisted Elliott's shirt in her hand. Briar leaned her forehead against his shoulder, her jaw clenched, and waited. She exhaled without even realizing she'd been holding her breath while the cramping subsided. Glancing at her watch again, she made a mental note: twelve minutes apart. "Can you call Kevin? Please?" she requested, her voice slightly muffled by his shirt.

He let go of her hands and wrapped his arm around her shoulders as she grimaced in pain. He did not like this at all. He was not going to feel better until they were at the hospital; even though he knew Briar was right. They still had plenty of time. "I'll call him once we get to the hospital," he promised, then kissed the top of her head. It was no use to tell Kevin when he couldn't even do anything about it yet. It would probably drive him just as crazy as it was driving Elliott.

She nodded without moving her forehead from his shoulder. It was selfish, but she wanted it to be just them for as long as it could be. She'd spend the rest of her life sharing her daughter with Kevin; it seemed important that she not have to share this.

"Right. Shower." She backed up and took off her coat again, this time hanging it up properly on the hook beside the door. "Find something to keep busy, you're making me nervous," she added, giving his arm a gentle squeeze on her way into the bedroom.

"You're making me nervous," he countered, following after her. "I don't think you should be showering by yourself. What if a contraction hits and you slip? Maybe you should have a bath instead," he suggested. Unfortunately for Briar, there wasn't anything for Elliott to keep busy with aside from Briar. It was kind of unlucky for her that he'd already quit The Firm, because he would have at least had law briefs to work on. The past three weeks without them had given him an amazing amount of free time that he refused to fill with anything else because it was supposed to be time for the baby. But he wouldn't have been able to concentrate on them right now, anyway, so the point was moot.

Briar smiled, "You know, I'd normally be annoyed that you think I'm so helpless. But right now it's just terribly endearing." She sat on the arm of the overstuffed chair in front of the window in the bedroom, peeling off her wet socks. "Do I seem off to you?" she queried, unbuttoning her jeans and standing up to tug them down, "Because I feel like I should be more ... something. Like I should maybe be feeling more?" She laughed, because it sounded sort of strange when she said it out loud.

He shrugged dramatically and then began pacing in front of her. "I honestly don't know that I'd be able to tell because I know I'm incredibly neurotic right now. You can't help what you feel. You'll probably regret wanting to feel more later when the pain of pushing a baby out of your uterus escalates to unbearable levels. Or so I've been told," he stopped pacing, crossed his arms, and managed to give her a grin.

"And I don't think you're helpless," he told her honestly. "There's just a baby trying to come out of you and, I dunno, if that were happening to me I don't think I'd be able to keep my balance very well on a wet surface," he countered.

She laughed again and grinned back at him, massaging her lower back with her thumbs. "Well she's not exactly trying very hard yet." Briar went into the bathroom and closed the door halfway. She turned on the faucet, letting it run until it was warm but not too hot before stopping the drain. "I've just been waiting for so long that it doesn't feel real that it's actually happening now," she called out to him, tugging off her shirt and kicking it behind the door. "Does it feel real to you?"

Yeah... Elliott was not having this conversation with her through the bathroom door. He followed her into the bathroom and hoisted himself to sit on the counter by the sink. "I feel the opposite. I thought I'd be fine when it was finally happening because we're prepared and ready and had plenty of time and now everything is happening and time is speeding up and slowing down all at once and all I want to do is take you to the hospital and have this baby," he said in one breath. He gave a short laugh when he realized how ridiculous he sounded, but it came out a little forced. "When we were by the front door, and you had that contraction..." Elliott couldn't keep the concern out of his voice or from the look on his face. "That was very real to me."

She grabbed her towel from the rack and wrapped it around herself when he followed her in. For as much time as she spent walking around the house in her underwear, and, frankly, for the number of times he'd seen her naked, she shouldn't have been bothered. But something about right now seemed somehow private. Like maybe she needed to be alone to take it all in. She hadn't really had time to process anything, yet.

She was about to ask him to just give her a few minutes when she saw the look on his face. It frequently stopped her heart to consider how much she loved him, and this was one of those moments. And even though this was the time to let him take care of her if there ever was one, she couldn't help but want to make him feel better. "I know." She walked over to him and put her hand on his knee, "I know. But it really doesn't hurt as much as I thought it was going to. At least not yet." She pressed her lips gently to his forehead. "I wish I could put you at ease, Fix," she added wistfully, using his last name as a term of endearment, "You're always so good at doing that for me.

Elliott leaned in and kissed her sweetly. She was too good to him. She shouldn't be worrying about him at all. "I'll be fine," he promised, and he intended to mean it.

He slid off the counter. "I'm going to go lie down and find my sanity," he hoped that taking her advice would make her stop worrying about him, "and be comforted by the fact that you're having a bath instead of standing on top of a slippery surface under a cascade of rushing water." He smiled at her and did his best to keep all of his nervousness out of the action.

"Don't be afraid to ask if you need anything," he told her seriously. He was here for her; not the other way around. Of course they were always supposed to be there for each other, but now was not the time for her to be worrying about him at all. He wanted to make sure she knew that she could call on him for anything. "I won't be able to sleep so it's no use thinking you'll just not bother me so I can rest, alright? I'm here for you," he promised, quirking a quick smile at her again. Then he left, leaving the door part-way open, and went to lay down. On top of the sheets with his shoes still on- just in case.

Briar smiled softly up at him, waiting for him to leave before turning off the water and slowly lowering herself into the tub. She sank under the surface, enjoying the warmth after being out in the rain. She tried to wrap her mind around what was happening, but she couldn't. It had been somehow easier to comprehend when they'd been picking out colors for the nursery and cleaning the house and buying tiny onesies. It had seemed like they were ready, but now that they were going to be bringing the baby home, she wasn't so sure. Planning for being a parent was one thing, actually being one was completely different.

She sat back up, wiping the water away from her eyes and grimacing through another contraction. She tried not to make too much noise; it didn't help anyway, and she was trying to stop freaking Elliott out while she could still help it. She reached over the edge of the bathtub, fishing around for her watch, which she'd put on the floor so it wouldn't get wet. Briar sighed and leaned her head against the wall. Still twelve minutes. She would have liked to hurry things along before she had a chance to start being scared.

She washed her hair and then started draining the water, hoisting herself out of the tub by the bar attached to the wall. She'd planned on staying in longer, but it was hurting her back to not be able to stretch her legs out. A few minutes later, she came out with her wet hair in a braid and got dressed in a plain grey v-neck and black cotton sweatpants with OXFORD printed down the leg. She pulled the elastic cuffs over her heels and climbed into bed to lay down next to Elliott. "Could I have some water? In that huge bottle?" she requested. She felt like she could have gotten it herself, but maybe letting him help would make him feel more in control.

Elliott stared at the ceiling and slowed his breathing down. Everything was fine. Briar was fine. The baby would be fine. This was just a waiting game now. Unfortunately, Elliott had never done well waiting for things. But he was determined now to get at least some of his sanity back.

He felt much better by the time Briar laid down next to him. He was ready. Briar was ready. Everything was going to be fine. He nodded at her request and leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Sure thing, Sweetheart," he answered as he sat up and did just that.

He came back a few moments later and set the water bottle on the nightstand closest to Briar as he sat beside her on the edge of the bed. "How was your bath?" he asked as he ran a hand down her arm and took her hand in his.

"Thanks." Briar closed her eyes when took her hand, "Not as relaxing as I was hoping, but fine." She gave his hand a gentle squeeze and looked back up at him, twisting a stray piece of hair around her finger like she always did when she was tired. "Want to watch a movie in bed?" she asked, mostly just wanting him to lay back down. "I might fall asleep, but at least then you'd have something to do besides think." She smiled up at him.

"I'm okay," he smiled back at her. "Really," he promised as he climbed over Briar to lay down beside her. "I wouldn't want the TV to distract you if you're trying to sleep. But if you want to watch something, go for it." He brought the hand he was still holding to his lips and kissed it.
