Sunday, August 1st

Jane was sitting on her couch, working on a few Ministry documents, when she heard a knock on her door. Reluctantly, she got up from her comfortable spot to see who it was. Upon opening the door, she was slightly surprised to see Philip, though hardly disappointed. "Hey." she started to say, but he was already pushing past her.

"I need to talk to you." He looked uncomfortable, nervous and even cross. Jane was not used to seeing him this way. It took a lot to get Philip mad, so it had to be something serious.

"All right..." She said, watching him carefully, he was still facing away from her. She swung the door shot behind her and took a seat on one of the stools up against the kitchen counter.

Philip finally turned around, but didn't take a seat. "A document came through the auror office with your name on it." He said cryptically, his face grim.

"So?" Jane asked, still confused and a little put off by his demeanour. She signed plenty of documents that went through the auror office. Leads on black market trading of dragon goods, forms for transporting live dragons and the list went on. She didn't see what the big deal was, unless she'd completely messed something up, in which case why was Philip coming to her flat to discuss it? That sort of thing should be dealt with at the office.

"Not that kind of document." Philip said, as if he could read her thoughts. Jane was beginning to get annoyed now.

"What are you getting at?"

"Your name's been put on a watch list as a potential associate of Colin Beckett." He said finally. The fact that he had used Colin's full name did not escape Jane's notice.

"Are you even supposed to be telling me that? Isn't that against some... I don't know... special auror code or something?" Philip was obviously displeased at Jane's reaction, but what was she supposed to do? She'd known what she was getting into from the start and something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. Colin had been dealing with it for ages. "Frankly, I'm a bit offended that I'm only on a 'potential watch list,' honestly." Jane continued coolly. This only caused Philip's scowl to deepen.

"Jane, you need to take this more seriously. You work at the Ministry! I'm not joking around here. You're endangering your entire career."

"Philip, that's my choice and I made it a long time ago." She shot back, getting up from her seat.

"I thought you would have gotten your priorities straightened out by now. I thought you would have come to your senses."

"I could say the same for you." Philip looked flustered, this obviously wasn't going the way he wanted it to.

"Could you at least think of someone besides yourself? I'm an auror, Jane. I'm not even supposed to be telling you all this. I'm risking my carreer to try to get some sense into you. This is serious stuff your dealing with -- "

"Don't you think I know that?" She interrupted, but Philip continued to speak over her.

"Dad's an obliviator. Thomas works in International Cooperation. Your family is literally cleaning up the mess you make." At this point they were positively shooting daggers at each other.

"So that's what this is about? You're afraid I'm going to ruin your reputation? Put your career in jeopardy?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying, and dad's and Thomas' careers. You're breaking the law, Jane."

"This is something I believe in, Philip. And I would have expected you to." They both knew well enough which words were tabooed and they did not need to voice them to get their point across.

"This isn't the way to go about it. And how much is it about that anyway? This is how you've always been. You've always wanted to be on the opposing side, always looking for what's going to cause the biggest stir. But you're not at Hogwarts anymore, the stakes are higher." It was a low blow and Philip knew it. Even in the moment he wasn't entirely sure if he believed everything he was saying, but when he got angry it always got the better of him. He seemed to have rendered Jane speechless, who was looking at him with a combination of hurt and utter outrage. The pained look in her eyes soon disappeared, though.

"I think you should leave." She said coldly. Philip realized that he had gone too far, but he didn't know how to back out of what he'd said, even if he'd wanted to. But the truth was that he was far to proud to go back on what he'd said. He opened his mouth to say something, but instead turned and left her flat.
