"Hmm, good." She moved to stand behind him again, combing the front of his hair forward and making quick snips at the rest. "But I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to magic some paint onto the walls of the nursery," she hinted obviously. "I can't do it myself ... chemicals or something. And I'm pretty sure Eoin is worthless at any type of work," she explained, laughing softly.

His fingers slipped away from her as she stepped behind him and he moved his hand to rest on his leg instead. He closed his eyes again as she brushed his hair forward. "I can definitely do that," he was glad to be useful for something, at least. "Have you got colors picked out?" Elliott hardly had any sense for interior decorating.

"Mhmm. I found this terrific yellow crib at the boot sale last weekend, so I was thinking an aqua for the walls ... seafoam, maybe." Briar was slowly moving towards his forehead. "And I'm having a grey cushion made for the window seat. A very light grey, you know?" Luckily, she did know how to decorate. That much was obvious by the rest of her house.

"Like a rocky beach on the sea." Elliott could clearly picture it with his eyes closed. "That'll be nice," he said, sighing contentedly. It was easy to relax with his eyes closed while Briar was touching him- even if it was just a haircut.

"Have you thought any more about names?" He hadn't asked in a while and her due date was drawing nearer everyday.

She shrugged and chewed on the inside of her cheek instead of answering his question. Everyone seemed to want to know whether or not she had a name picked out, but she didn't really see the rush. Sure, maybe it wasn't normal that she was still referring to the baby as The Baby, but Briar felt sort of weird about naming her daughter before she'd even met her.

"It's not that I'm not thinking about it, I just don't know how to even start narrowing it down without knowing who she is." She stood in front of him again. "What about you?" she shot back, "Have you given any thought to names?" Briar paused briefly to even out the length of Elliott's hair, "Specifically her surname?" She hadn't specifically broached the subject yet, but she knew it had to be obvious enough.

Elliott blinked his eyes open at Briar and considered her. He didn't have the right. Legally speaking, of course. In the law, he was nobody to this baby until he married Briar. Kevin would be there to register the baby's name. Kevin's name was going to be on the birth certificate. There was no way he would consent to giving his child another man's surname.

"I haven't the right," he told her. "Under the law, it's got to be your surname or Kevin's. Unless you want to rush a wedding," he told her, and the look on his face suggested that he thought would be a very bad idea indeed.

"Given the choice between the two, I'd much rather her be a Donahue than a Homilton. The Homilton name in the wizarding world holds certain connotations. Old money, mansions, blood purity... things she won't ever be a part of. Really, the Homilton family has been against discrimination based on blood purity in modern times, but that didn't seem to stop them from marrying purebloods anyway and having pureblood children..." he shrugged.

"Cariana was one of my best friends growing up. I saw how people treated her at school. I've been to her family's mansion. I just think, to have that name, and not be raised that way.... it's going to make trouble for her when she goes to Hogwarts," he concluded. He furrowed his brow. He didn't want to think that far ahead. Plenty of kids were from non-traditional families these days. She'd be fine. Surely by the time she got to Hogwarts she'd understand.

"Cariana is a beautiful name," he said, changing the subject. He'd always thought so. Cariana had been entirely reasonable about everything, of course. Elliott had expected nothing less from her. She was no-nonsense. Being there for the baby was the most important thing, not worrying about hurt feelings. She and Elliott remained good friends.

She pursed her lips and kept trimming his bangs in silence while he talked. She knew the law, that wasn't what she had been asking about. She didn't know exactly what Elliott was talking about in regards to the connotations Kevin's name held, but it wasn't like she needed persuading. She had no plan of trying to keep Kevin from their daughter, but there was no way Briar was going to let him have the kind of claim over her that giving her his last name would award. On the other hand, there was certainly no chance that Kevin would even ever consider letting Elliott have something he couldn't have.

But Briar didn't see the big deal about getting married before the baby was born. It would probably make things easier, anyway, and it wasn't exactly like she was going to be any more in the mood for a lavish ceremony when she was awake all night with a crying newborn. Really, wouldn't it make sense to just have a small ceremony now, invite the necessary guests, and let the baby have Elliott's name? Wouldn't it be better for her daughter to start her life in an already solidified family, rather than one that might exist in the abstract future?

"Cariana is a perfectly nice name, but it's not ..." she stopped cutting and gestured with the scissors, trying to find the right word. It just wasn't it, that was all. And she barely knew the younger woman, anyway. Naming the baby after her ex-boyfriend's semi-stranger of a sister didn't really seem right. But she interrupted that thought to argue her point, "Would it be so bad, Elliott? It could be small, just our parents and Eoin ... maybe a few other people. Simple. I don't want anything elaborate anyway, I'd be happy enough just to have you."

Elliott had closed his eyes when Briar had started cutting his bangs, but opened them again when she stopped and tried to convince him to marry her in the next two months. He sighed. "You will have me. We're going to get married," he promised, looking into her eyes. "But I haven't even asked you properly and the last thing we both need right now is another stressor. Lets focus on getting you through the rest of this pregnancy in good mental and physical health, alright? You're already driving yourself crazy with applicants for the restaurant. I don't want to add a wedding on top of that," he told her gently.

He reached out and rested his hands on her hips. "We can get married after the baby gets into a good routine and we can stand to be away from her for a night or two for the worlds shortest honeymoon," he suggested with a smile. "And I know you don't want anything elaborate, but Briar... I can't give you a small wedding. It can be sweet and simple and you can have Noah cater it if you want; it doesn't matter. But I can't have a small wedding," he finished, giving her a pointed look. A couple gets married for each other and has a wedding for everyone else. She should have realized that already. She probably did. She was probably just trying her luck. But the truth was that Elliott Fix was a politician, and a politician can't have a tiny shotgun wedding to a woman pregnant with someone else's baby and hope to keep his career.

Briar covered his hands with hers when they rested on her hips. What he was describing sounded like it was going to be more distantly in the future than she really wanted. When did babies even start following routines? She wasn't exactly sure -it wasn't like she was an expert on newborns, but she had a feeling it wouldn't be soon. A flicker of disappointment flashed through her eyes, but then she registered the look he was giving her. She smiled and leaned in to kiss him. "I'm being selfish. Not just right now, but lately in general. I'm sorry," she apologized. And she really was sorry, she didn't have any ulterior motives.

"Of course you can't have a small wedding, you're Very Important," she teased lightly, kissing him again and then taking a step back, "I'd been wondering when being in love with a politician would get interesting." She very easily could have a small wedding. Her job left her with nearly no time for friends, so aside from Noah and his wife, there was really no one outside of her family she wanted there. Elliott, on the other hand, knew a ridiculous number of people who he'd doubtless want to invite. He'd probably have to invite people he didn't want to invite. "I'll stop trying to rush things along, and if I keep trying to make everything all about me, you're going to have to tell me to sod off." She looked down at him with one eyebrow lifted seriously.

Elliott stood up and slid his hand's from Briar's hips to wrap around her back and hug her as close as her pregnant belly would let him, not even thinking about the bits of hair that were undoubtedly stuck on him. "I love you. I don't want you to sod off," he leaned in and kissed her. "I would marry you tonight if I didn't have social obligations," he said as he pulled back and smiled at her. "I want this," he promised again. "But I can't rush it."

He leaned in and kissed her again, slowly and tenderly. "Lets not even think about the wedding anymore until after the baby's born. One thing at a time," he said, smiling gently. "You can worry about how interesting life with a politician is after that, too," he teased.

To solidify is stance, he brought the subject back around to baby names. "My mum's always joked that I would have to name my first daughter for her for all the trouble I put her through as a kid," he told her with a grin. He had been a handful as a kid, but she had teased him about naming a daughter after her so often that he didn't think he could ever actually do it. Giving his mother exactly what she wanted was very dangerous.

She made a face; being told that 'social obligations' trumped whatever Elliott was feeling was not exactly romantic. And he'd been doing so well, too. She reached up to brush some hair from where it had landed on his cheek and laughed when he suggested they stop thinking about the wedding. "I'll let you do all the thinking about that. I'm complete rubbish at weddings, anyway. You tell me where and when to show up and I'll be there. I'll be the one in an off-white dress." She grinned.

Briar slipped her scissors into her back pocket and tousled Elliott's hair while he talked, trying to make sure it would lay right. "Oh, that would be good. I'm sure my mum would be really appreciative of our choosing your mum's name over hers." She paused for a moment, considering both what he had said and his hair, which now looked more or less exactly as it had a couple weeks ago, just before it had gotten too shaggy to be acceptable. She could always trim it again in a week if that was the cost of keeping him a little less clean cut. "But maybe as a middle name?"

Elliott let go of Briar and laughed and shook his head; not to disagree, but to try and make his hair fall into its natural place. "I would never seriously suggest 'Andrea' as a first name, anyway. I think she'd lord it over me the rest of her life," he said as he did his best to brush stray bits of hair of his shoulders and chest. "I love your mum," he added. "But I don't love her name," he confessed. "What's her middle name?" He was open to all ideas. Anything to get Briar to talk about it and consider her options rather than just continue to put it off. He didn't care if she picked one before the baby was actually born, but not even having the slightest idea made him nervous.

She laughed at his confession, "Why do you think my dad always calls her Bee? Bridget is a horrible name. And thinking about a baby named Bridget is even worse." She started helping him brush the hair off his chest, chewing her lower lip absentmindedly. "It's Grace, too. Hers was for my nan's sister, mine was for my dad's mum. But ... still. Grace wouldn't be bad, do you think?"

He sighed in relief, "Oh, good; Bridget is an awful name. I wouldn't inflict it on my worst enemy," he admitted. There were too many consonant sounds all close together. There was nothing feminine about it and it sounded like a noise someone made when they were sick. He ran his hand vigorously through the back on his hair to release any remaining cut hairs, then turned so Briar could brush off his back.

"Grace is nice. I like that it's a family name, too." Elliott's first name was his grandmother's surname, and his middle name was his father's name. He liked connections like that. "Do you think you prefer shorter names?"

"I don't know," she admitted, starting to brush off his back, sweeping her hand over his shoulder blades. "I've never had to decide on a name that's so important before. I don't want to make a mistake." She sighed softly, "I just don't like the idea of calling her the wrong name now before we know just because everyone is anxious for me to decide. And I don't want to decide alone; she's going to be your daughter, too, you should have some say."

"You don't have to pick a name until after she's born," he assured her as he turned back around. "I just think it's prudent to talk about now so you at least have some idea when she finally makes her debut." He took her hand and led her back over to the bed and sat down.

"I think you and I have fairly similar taste. I'm sure I'll like whatever you pick, and I'll definitely tell you I think something's awful. For instance, the name Gretchen. I'm warning you now; I think it's terrible. Don't even try," he teased lightly.

"What does Kevin like?" he asked conversationally. Elliott felt like Kevin was entitled to more of an opinion than he was, but part of him knew that was a little stupid to think so. It was just biology. He was in this for good, too, so it didn't matter whose DNA she had. They should all be able to agree on a name together. And if they couldn't, well obviously Briar's opinion mattered most, seeing as she was doing the whole nine months as a baby incubator.

Briar sat down next to him and closed her eyes, resting her cheek against his shoulder. "I don't really know, he's never said." She sighed deeply. "I don't want to talk about Kevin right now, ok?" she requested, her voice slightly strained. Or ever, for that matter. He was being very difficult lately, which was honestly not something she'd anticipated. He he'd always been pretty sensible before ... but, then again, she knew that things changed when you had a child to think about. Kevin wasn't the type of person to run from responsibility, and she'd been making running hard for him not to do. She knew he was still frustrated with her for choosing Elliott, angry that the distance made it almost impossible for him to really be supportive. But still, that didn't excuse the fact that he was all but ignoring her calls. She wanted him to be there for the birth, but if he was going to keep trying to make her feel guilty (which she did - very much so) then she wouldn't be able to let him.

She sat up, staring out across the yard. "I just wish it had been anyone but Kevin," she tried to explain, "Anyone who would have just left. I can't ... I don't know how to be around him anymore. And he hates me now. Every time I think about it I feel so guilty. Because if it wasn't Kevin, it wouldn't be her, it wouldn't be this baby ... but ... I don't know."

Elliott dropped Briar's hand and put his arm around her as she leaned into him. He hadn't actually wanted to talk about Kevin, either. He was just trying to keep the baby names coming. He was a little surprised to hear that she hadn't heard from him. That wasn't good. Maybe he'd talk to Cariana and see what she knew. He ran his hand up and down her arm and kissed her temple, hoping it was at least a small comfort.

"I think you should stop worrying about it," he advised softly. "It isn't healthy and feeling guilty isn't going to change anything. No one is going to judge you for occasionally wishing that things had gone a little differently. Everyone has moments like that." He kissed her temple again.

"Kevin will come around. Mum's warned me that a lot of fathers have a hard time caring about the baby until it's born- until they hold it in their arms. It's a lot easier for mums because the baby is quite literally a part of them until its born. And it's easier for me because I've got the evidence right in front of me all the time and my psychologist mother explaining how to make it feel more real for me," he told her gently. He couldn't believe he was defending Kevin. No, defending him wasn't the right word. Empathizing with him, maybe. He would have never thought... but then, he knew Kevin wasn't a bad guy. He'd never liked him, for reasons unrelated to his general personality and mostly based on his dating history, but he knew he was an overall good guy.

Briar sat up and stared at him. "I wish you would stop being so reasonable all the time. I don't want you to defend Kevin to me, I just want to feel like someone is on my side for once." She smiled weakly, "Call him a worthless prick, or whatever it is boyfriends are supposed to do." She wasn't being completely serious, obviously. Kevin was far from worthless, but that only made it worse that he was acting this way. She'd counted on him staying the good guy, not that that was even remotely fair. She knew that Elliott's mother was probably right -she usually was- but that didn't mean Briar wanted to hear it.

He rolled his eyes at her and gave her a small smile. "Have it your way. Kevin is a hot-headed, cocky, Ministry-made cookie-cutter fool of a thug. I have never like him. He's inconsistent, inconsiderate, and insufferable. I sent him an owl when I found out you were dating warning him not to fuck up, and he did just that. Not that I can really complain..." he raised an eyebrow at her and smirked.

He ran his hand up from her arm to her cheek and stroked it with his thumb. "Don't worry about Kevin," he advised her again. "You've left the door open for him to be a father if he wants. If he comes around, great. If he never does, so what?" He put his other hand on her belly. "She'll have you and she'll have me. She'll have neurotic grandparents and an even crazier uncle. She'll be surrounded by cooks, politicians, and medical professionals. She'll either be incredibly well rounded or eclectic and eccentric, but either way she'll have everything she needs to be exactly who she wants to be. And that's what really matters, yeah?" he reminded her gently and leaned in and kissed her forehead.
