Kryptonite whined again and nudged the bottom of Briar's bare foot with his nose, then ran to the small garden and batted the bright green hose with his paw. He darted back to where Briar and Elliott were lounging -on the hanging daybed suspended from the roof of the back patio- and barked sharply. She stopped absentmindedly running her fingers up and down Elliott's calf and pressed a soft kiss to his knee before looking down at the dog. "Does it look like I want to play with you right now?" she asked seriously from her very comfortable position sitting between her boyfriend's legs. She raised an eyebrow and he barked one more time, then curled back up on the cool paving stones under the bed. She nestled back against Elliott's chest and sighed contentedly, flipping silently through the pages of yet another resumé. "I just think working in a restaurant would be so fun." She scoffed and flipped that one immediately into the rejection pile. Perhaps she was a bit less patient than she had been with hiring before she'd found herself seriously pregnant and still without a trained sous chef to cover for Noah when he took over for her in a few months. But there wasn't much time left, and she knew she had to be careful in her selection. So for that reason, she tossed every applicant who mentioned 'fun,' 'exciting,' or 'interesting change of pace.' Anyone who had worked in a kitchen for longer than a month knew it wasn't fun, or even usually exciting in a positive way, and she didn't have time for a caterer looking for a 'change of pace.' She groaned when she saw the age of the next hopeful -barely twenty-three.- She dropped the rest of the papers into her lap, her now freed hand returning to Elliott's leg to run between his ankle and his knee slowly.

"Maybe," she'd toyed with the idea privately already, "I just won't take any time off." She turned her head to gauge his reaction, but was instantly distracted. She smiled up at him fondly, "You need a hair cut."

Elliott laughed when she said she wasn't going to take any time off and smirked when she said he needed a haircut. "I almost always need a haircut. My hair grows too fast and going to get it cut always seems like an awful waste of time." He took his right hand back from where it had been resting on her belly and ran it through his hair self-consciously. The ends had started to curl. That was a sure sign that is was far too long to be respectable.

"And, Briar, honestly- not taking time off with a new baby?" he raised an eyebrow at her and offered an amused smile. "You'd be a mess. Besides, I'm quitting an entire job for this baby. I think you can manage a few months away," he said, then leaned in a kissed her cheek.

He brought his hand out of his hair and around to pick up the top resume. "What's wrong with this one?" he gave it a playful shake in his hand and wagged his eyebrows at her mock-enticingly.

She grimaced, then laughed, "Months? God no. Then I would be a mess." Maybe one month. Maybe. "Not because I don't want to, but because I'm afraid it would be too much fun to sit at home with you and the baby and I'd never leave." This was true, but on the flip side, she wasn't sure she would be able to bear keeping herself out of the kitchen for that long. The endless, coffee-fueled hours had become a drug whose high she couldn't imagine living without.

"That one," she sighed in exasperation, "Thinks it will be 'fun.' Which is a dead giveaway that she has no clue what she's doing. And inexperience is not what I need on my line. Especially with Noah being in charge for the first time in his career." It would be interesting to see how this all panned out. Hopefully, everything would work itself out, because in spite of the inconvenience her pregnancy had been, it was an inconvenience she wanted the chance to experience again. "You could quit all of your jobs," she suggested jokingly, grinning, "And be a full-time dad. Eh?" She gave him a playful nudge in the ribs with her elbow, laughing lightly.

"Oh, come on," he rolled his eyes and chuckled. "A little idealism never hurt anyone, yeah? Besides, maybe it will be fun for her. Some people thrive on stress," he said, giving her a knowing look. He set the resume back down in her lap and wrapped his arms around her.

He nuzzled his face in her neck and chuckled at her suggestion. "If I weren't an MP and trying to change the world, sure. I'd be your kept man," he joked in return.

She brought his hand up to her lips and kissed his palm, humming thoughtfully. "I'm not sure I make the money that kind of relationship would require," she mused. "If only." She pushed the paper aside and let his hand fall.

Briar closed her eyes. They sat in comfortable silence for a beat before she spoke again. "I like your hair long, but I could cut it for you." She thought about combing her fingers through his curls and sighed wistfully, "But not too short."

He smiled at her suggestion. "That'd be nice, actually. I don't like it too short, either. I look too much like my dad. I suppose never getting it cut short enough in the first place is why I need it trimmed so often." He ran his hand through his hair again. There was a lot of it and it was dark and that made it extra hot in the summertime.

"I can only hope you still look that good when you're his age," she shot back, laughing again and pushing herself up into a more upright position. She swung her legs over the edge and stood up -after failing and falling back down on the first attempt-, "Okay! I'll be right back." Briar went inside through the French doors, which were already propped open in the hope of luring the comfortable breeze into the house. She returned a minute later with a brightly tie-dyed bed sheet, a comb, and the scissors she'd bought to trim her bangs in between salon trips. She was dragging a chair from the kitchen table, "Don't worry," she assured him, grinning, "I'm practically a professional." She was not. But as the person who probably cared most about Elliott's hair -after Elliott himself, of course- she would be careful not to mess up.

Elliott's father was, according to his mother, ageing like a fine wine. But he wasn't even that old yet; just barely past middle age. And as much as he tried to deny it, Michael's hairline was actually receding. Elliott hoped he didn't inherit that part.

He laughed when Briar got up. "What, now?" he asked. But she was already disappearing into the house. That was fine. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stretched. It was a beautiful evening and still quite bright. He looked over as he heard her come back out and laughed at how she looked with her supplies.

He stood up, shaking his head, and went over to her. "I'm not worried," he assured her. "What is this?" he asked, taking hold of the brightly colored sheet. His tone and expression were clearly amused.

She raised an eyebrow at him while slipping the comb and scissors into her back pocket, "Hey, look, you can make fun of my embarrassing bed set- which, by the way, my mother picked out," she laughed, because it was actually ridiculous to imagine Bridget at the checkout with anything that vibrant, "In some attempt to connect with me when I dropped out of med school. I think in her mind, it was MD or vagrant." She grinned and tugged the sheet back. "But that won't help keep the hair off of you. It's either this or you take off your shirt. And we both know how distracting that is for me," she teased, flashing him a quick smirk.

He laughed when she said it was 'MD or vagrant.' It was the same way with his father. 'MP or vagrant.' The difference is that he had gone along with it. He couldn't help it, though. He loved politics. He was more like his father than he was willing to admit.

He grinned down at her at the last thing she said. "I like distracting you," he said cheekily. He reached down and pulled his shirt off in one fluid motion, then tossed it onto the bed. Besides, he was too warm to wrap himself up in a sheet just to protect his shirt.

He winked at her, then sat down in the chair. He rand both his hands through his hair. "I think I'm going to miss it," he said, sighing dramatically. "Be gentle," he teased. If he wasn't supposed to look so damn important all the time, he would have kept it longer. Mostly out of vanity- he knew it gave him an extra edge of cuteness when it started to curl that Briar couldn't resist running her fingers though, and he really liked that feeling.

She stared for longer than was probably polite when he pulled off his shirt, then sighed and shook her head, smiling softly. It was amazing (to Briar at least) how attractive she found him. All the time. Even after all the time she'd spent looking at him- apparently it was not one of those things that wore off.

She moved to stand behind him, raking her fingers back through his hair a few times before responding in an overly somber tone, "This is definitely going to hurt me more than it will hurt you." Definitely. She massaged his scalp, "Maybe we should say a few words. I'll start." She cleared her throat, "Hair ... you were good hair. Great, even. And it's been very nice to have you to run my fingers through. But now you're getting long, too long, and that makes the balding, much less beautiful MPs very anxious. So it's time to part ways." She nodded once, decisively, then hurriedly tagged on, "And please don't take Elliott's ingratitude out on his hairline later in life. ...amen."

Elliott hummed appreciatively at the feel of her hands in his hair. He laughed lightly when she said that it was going to hurt her more that it would hurt him. He stifled it, though, when she suggested she should say some words. This was going to be good. He couldn't help it though- when she ended with 'amen' he cracked up. He reached up and grabbed her right hand with his and brought it down to his lips and kissed it. "Thank you, darling, I couldn't have said it better myself."

He dropped her hand and tilted his head back as far as he could to look up at her and grin. "I'm ready if you are. Just remember: this hair is part of what over 75,000 people in North West England recognize about their Representative in Parliament. So if you shave it all off, you'll have to answer to them as well. Not to pressure you or anything," he teased.

She grinned, "Let's be honest, kid. This hair is probably what got you elected to begin with. Luckily, they're pretty well stuck with you now." She leaned forward as far as she could, which was just enough to press her lips lightly to his forehead, "Now stay just like that." Briar went to the side of the house and turned on the tap, then went back to grab the garden hose. She adjusted the dial on the end of the sprayer attachment to 'mist.' She only had one spray bottle that she used when she was baking bread, but she hadn't been able to find it for the past few months. Which likely meant that it was in a cabinet she couldn't reach now that she was unable to just hop up onto the counter.

Briar squeezed the handle and misted Elliott's hair until it was damp enough to cut, then tossed the hose back into the grass. She grabbed the comb and scissors from her back pocket, "Just remember: whatever happens, I love you." And then she started cutting, the back first, careful not to take too much off. While she worked, she hummed the song that had been stuck in her head all day; she always hummed when she was really concentrating.

Elliott did has he was told and didn't move. He closed his eyes and relaxed until Briar returned. He opened his eyes, saw the hose and laughed, and closed his eyes again. He laughed at her declaration. "I thought you said you were practically professional!" he admonished teasingly, eyes still closed. "But I'll love you even if you accidentally miss and take an ear off," he promised. Besides, the ear could be easily fixed.

She stopped humming, "Well, using the term 'professional' loosely ...." She grinned, even though he couldn't see her. "And anyway, I doubt I can do any damage you couldn't fix right up," she teased. "Come to think of it, can't you, you know, just give your wand a wave and tell your hair to behave itself?" she asked curiously, thinking of his untamable bed-head.

He opened his eyes and looked back up at her as he answered. "I could cut my hair with my wand, but that would look just as bad as if I'd cut it myself with shears. Transfiguring the actual characteristics of my hair would be much harder; mostly because you have to have the will for things to happen behind the spell, and I really like my hair the way it is. It actually might be magic that makes it grow so fast," he explained. "If mum could do magic she could probably tell my hair what to do very easily," he joked.

She laughed softly at his comment about his mother and started working on the sides of his head. "Well then I don't see what good being a wizard is if you have someone as excellent as me to take care of you," she joked, laughing again and raising an eyebrow while she trimmed around his ear, "What could you possibly need magic for when I do all the hard work around here?"

"If you're talking about cutting my hair being hard work, remember: you volunteered," he teased. "But if you're seriously asking, you could possibly be doing less work. Magic is pretty handy. I'm great with household spells," he informed her, closing his eyes again as she trimmed around his ear.

She smiled down at him fondly, "No, I was not seriously asking. I don't want to do less." She stepped to the other side of the chair to trim around his other ear. "This is the way I love you," she explained simply. Briar was in her element when she was allowed to be domestic. She took care of people, it was just what she did.

He opened his eyes and tried to look at her, but couldn't. He smiled at her words and reached a hand out to her. It found her baby belly first, then crawled across to her hip and gave it an affectionate squeeze. "Then I won't stop you," he promised.
