July 10, 2038. 10 pm.

The wedding had been beautiful. The food: delectable. Now all that was left was drinking, dancing, and occasional small talk among acquaintances and big talk among friends.

Eoin had shed his jacket hours ago, but but still managed to look sharp in his black slacks and white oxford shirt. His tie matched Jane's dress perfectly. He was clean shaven for the first time in ages. He didn't look like himself. He felt more like himself than he usually did, though. He was truly a social creature. He forgot himself when he was alone. He knew exactly who he was tonight.

He had only meant to be gone a minute, but he'd ran into another friend at the bar and the minute quickly became five. He realized suddenly that he'd left Jane alone and glanced back over to her at the table. His hands tightened around the two glasses in his hands at the sight of her. He quickly remembered why he had gone to get drinks in the first place. He downed half of his drink right then.

He'd always thought that Jane was good looking. But tonight was the first time he'd ever seen her in a dress. She was actually drop-dead gorgeous. She was just very good at hiding it in everyday circumstances.

As Eoin stared, his friend became to realize that he was no longer being paid any attention. His gaze followed Eoin's to Jane. Aha. Well, he was very interested in just how distracted she managed to make Eoin. He tested his theory "... New Zealand has me particularly concerned. If any place were to host a sheep uprising, it'd be there. More sheep than people, you know. Imagine if they got a hold of nuclear warheads. Wool everywhere. Isn't that right, Eoin?" he asked, smirking.

Eoin barely managed to register his name and that it had been part of a question. He tore his gaze from Jane and looked back to Jack. "Yeah, definitely," he nodded. He had no bloody clue what he was agreeing about. Jack laughed. Eoin raised his eyebrows, clearly missing the joke.

"She must be something special," Jack said with a slight nod toward Jane, still smirking.

Eoin quickly shook his head, then realized how incredibly stupid that was because now he couldn't even pretend not to know what Jack was talking about. His second thought was, now that he had admitted to knowing what he was talking about, how untrue it was that he was shaking his head. He nodded instead. Jack laughed again. "She's a philanthropist and much too good for me," Eoin told him frankly, then finished his drink.

"A philanthropist? Surely she's attracted to hopeless causes like yourself," Jack teased.

"Tried that line already," Eoin admitted with a laugh. He put his empty glass on the bar and help up his index finger to the barkeep, indicating that he needed one more.

"She's here with you tonight, isn't she?" Jack offered.

"That part I'm good at," Eoin conceded. "I have no problem getting her to spend time with me. Anything beyond that..." he shook his head, "...she's bloody impossible."

"Oh, it's her and not you, then?" Jack teased.

"Damn straight," Eoin laughed. "You know the kind of girls I usually go with."

"Yeah: pretty, mildly entertaining, disposable. She's definitely not it. Too much class," Jack observed.

"What would I do with a girl that held my interest for more than three weeks?" Eoin questioned hypothetically, teasing.

"You're afraid that she'd get bored of you first," Jack answered anyway.

Eoin choked on his own spit. "That's ridiculous."

"You're ridiculous," Jack countered.

"I like a little variety, that's all. I get twitchy when girls want to keep me around." The bartender returned with Eoin's drink. He picked it up.

"No, you get stupid and then cut and run."

Eoin bristled. "I appreciate the complimentary psychoanalysis, but I think I've had enough for one night." Eoin rolled his eyes and started to leave.

Jack caught his elbow. "Hey! You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

"I'm not expecting different results," Eoin insisted.

"Tell her that," Jack shot back.

"Sod off," Eoin pulled his elbow away then stalked back towards Jane. Jack didn't know what he was talking about. He'd gotten married just a few months ago himself; he was clearly still in his honeymoon phase and obviously thought he knew everything there was to know about relationships now. As if.

His pace slowed as he approached Jane. Well, shit. He'd gotten drinks so he could distract himself from Jane, but Jack had insured that that hadn't happened. And now he was too annoyed with Jack to sit and drink. Well, he was already passed buzzed and fast approaching drunk. Probably best to slow down on the drinking anyway. He smiled at Jane and set the drinks on the table. "Hey, sorry about the wait. Got accosted at the bar," he grinned at her, then held out his hand. "Wanna dance?" he raised his eyebrows suggestively. The wedding band was playing Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl'. How fitting.

So far the wedding had been enjoyable, even if she didn't know anyone. The only frustrating thing was constantly having to lie about what she did and things like where she'd gone to school. Of course, by now Jane had a good cover story, but she still relied mostly on being vague and people's enthusiasm when asked about themselves. If she'd been able to tell the truth Jane would have liked to talk about herself as much as the next person, but as it were she had to rely on distracting people from probing too deep into her fake life by asking her own invasive questions.

Eoin had left the table a few minutes ago and Jane sat playing absentmindedly with her empty glass, tilting it back and forth and watching the last few drops roll about. Jane's hand flitted up to her hair before remembering she was on strict instructions not to touch it. She quickly withdrew it again. A couple of her work friends had been very excited when she'd asked them to help her out and had wasted no time in discussing with each other exactly what Jane should wear and how they should do her hair. She'd had little say in the matter, the only thing she'd added herself, to the annoyance of Amelia and Aurora, was the dragon earwrap she wore on her right ear. It amused her. Otherwise, Amelia and Aurora had done her hair, or rather Amelia had. It was pulled up into a style that she supposed had a name, but one she was unaware of. Her hair, which was usually ramrod straight, was now slightly curled at the ends, as were her bangs, which framed her face. A variety of spells, almost all of which Jane had never heard of, were used to achieve the effect. The magic, of course, had kept her hair and makeup perfect throughout the night. There was no slipping into the bathroom to fix her appearance for Jane. Ah, the wonders of magic.

After a few minutes, Eoin did return to the table, drinks in hand. Instead of sitting down, though, he put the glasses on the table and offered his hand, with an invitation to dance. Jane returned his grin and put her hand in his. “Good plan.” She said, standing up. It had been quickly established that Jane should wear flats. Since she was taller than Eoin there was definitely no need for the added height. There had been no resistance from Jane concerning this as she had little success with heels anyway.

"I keep expecting The Devilish Doxies or The Cauldron Culprits to start playing. Great dance music." Jane remarked as they walked to the dance floor. "I'll have to introduce you to their music or has Colin already made you listen to The Devilish Doxies?" It was difficult to know Colin for more than ten minutes and not know that he fan The Devilish Doxies.

Eoin had actually worn shoes with a bit of lift in them. Between Jane's very flat shoes and the cleverly hidden rise in his, they appeared to be at about the same height as he led her onto the dance floor. He shook his head at her question. "I think I've maybe seen him in one of their t-shirts," the name did sound familiar, after all, "but I haven't heard any of their songs."

He stopped at an open spot on the dance floor and took her other hand as well, now facing Jane with both of her hands in his. He started dancing with a basic side step while the band played.

So hard to find my way
Now that I'm all on my own
I saw you just the other day
My, how you have grown

"Do you know this song?" he asked. "Do you even listen to... my kind of music?" he wondered with a smirk.

Jane followed Eoin's simple steps as they moved to the music. It was a bit odd to be with Eoin in such of formal situation as they normally spent their time together at his sister's restaurant or playing video games at his flat. It was nice though and, as Jane had suspected, he cleaned up quite nicely. Shaving did wonders.

"This song I do recognize. But it's quite old isn't it? My dad's muggle-born so some of the older stuff I've heard." She returned his smirk when he asked if she listened to "his" kind of music. Before answering though, she glanced around to check the no one was approaching them, but everyone seemed to be caught up in their own conversations. "To be honest, not that much. Though don't go quizzing me on wizarding pop culture either. Living in the Swedish mountains for ages can get you quite out of touch with both worlds."

Eoin laughed lightly when she asked if the song was old. It shouldn't have been that funny, but for some reason it was. Perhaps it was the way she asked. More probably it was the alcohol. "It's a classic!" he told her with a grin, shaking his head. The song had been nearing the end when they'd started dancing, and it was currently in it's final set of 'sha la las'. Maybe that's why it was funny. Maybe it was the song itself. Sha la la ti da.

He shook his head, stifling another laugh, when she mentioned living in the mountains. "Mmmm," he hummed. "I just can't see you as a mountain woman. All that time being away from everyone is bound to make a person crazy. Or maybe that's just me. Maybe I just can't see myself as a mountain woman. Probably you were great at it," he conceded laughing.

The band leader said something about 'slowing things down' over the last few notes of 'Brown Eyed Girl' and then launched into an Iron and Wine type cover of 'Such Great Heights.' Eoin wagged his eyebrows at Jane and dropped her left hand and put his newly freed right hand on her left hip and stepped closer to her. He still held onto her right hand with his left, elbows bent and hands close to their shoulders. He moved side to side slowly with the music.

Jane had to stifle her laughter when Eoin starting talking about her as a "mountain woman" and missed a step when he said that maybe it was because he couldn't see himself as a mountain woman. "It was on a reservation, you know." She said, still giggling. "I wasn't living in a tent, there were other researchers there... and dragons. Dragons are the best company." She added, a bit of nostalgia creeping into her voice. "It just wasn't... culturally diverse." She said, the carefulness of her word choice a bit exaggerated. What she meant, of course, what that she hadn't had much touch with the muggle world, making her even more out of touch with its pop culture.

Jane's heart quickened when the music changed and Eoin put his hand on her hip. However, she immediately chastised herself for the feeling, this was Eoin. Sure, she'd been attracted to him when they'd first met, but they'd been nothing more than friends. She looked at him carefully, but he just looked amused. It was too bad she wasn't a Legilimens. Though she supposed that maybe using magic to peak into the mind of someone you fancied was against some ancient, strict set of rules.

Eoin laughed when Jane said dragons were the best company and it turned into a snicker when she said living on the reservation wasn't culturally diverse. He was sure dragon loving witches and wizards were a tiny subset of people.

He grinned at her allowing him to be close to her. He wanted to be closer. He didn't want to push his luck. Any other girl might have already wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned her head on his shoulder. But Jane was not like other girls. She was clearly incomprehensible and it left him uncertain about how to act. Which he hated.

He caught her eye as she studied him and held her gaze. She really was beautiful. The vocalist started singing, but he talked over him. "I know I already told you that you looked good when I picked you up, but it bears repeating: you look absolutely stunning," he told her honestly. "It's really hard to not want to be looking at you all the time," as usual, too blunt for his own good.

Bluntness was good because otherwise, Jane would probably never get the message. She was, and had always been, rather oblivious to this sort of thing. With Eoin it was even more confusing as he was a flirtatious person in general and it was difficult to tell exactly what his motivations were. Nonetheless, it made her smile when he complimented her appearance. She didn't often get dressed up nor did she like to, but somewhere buried deep down she was enough of a girl to want to be complimented when she put in the effort.

Yet, she still wasn't sure what he was getting at. His words and the way he looked at her made her feel both excited and absurd. Absurd because he made her feel like a love struck teenager, embarrassed and unsure. It was ridiculous and Jane didn't like it. She leaned forward, her left hand sliding behind his shoulder, bringing her lips close to his ear. "You," she whispered, "are confusing me." She wanted to stay that close to him but she reluctantly drew away to see his reaction. She looked at him with a half sheepish, half amused smirk on her face.

He grinned as she leaned in closer to him. Yes, this was the reaction he was looking for. He slid his right hand from her hip around to her back as her hand slid behind his shoulder. His grip on her left hand tightened as she spoke in his ear and goosebumps spread involuntarily, but thankfully imperceptibly, across his flesh. His ears had always been sensitive and prone to ticklishness.

Her words caused a different reaction. Confusing? He didn't think he'd been anywhere close to vague.

And then she was drawing away and his smile faltered, but only a little, and his grip on her hand loosened and he was worried for the briefest second that she was just going to walk away and leave him to be the confused one. But she stopped; right when he could see her face and just before he would have had to take his arm back from around her. And she was smirking at him. Well, if that's how she wanted to play things...

He smirked back; a crooked little half smile that promised too much. "Then let me make myself perfectly clear," he said, holding her gaze. "I think you're beautiful." He let go of her hand and put his left hand on her shoulder instead. "You're attractive to me in almost every way." His hand trailed over her shoulder and up the side of her neck, stopping with his fingers and the base of her neck and his thumb on her cheek. He leaned in slowly, his eyes leaving hers and sliding down to focus on her lips until he was too close to her face to focus on anything anymore. "I'm going to kiss you now," he whispered right before his lips met hers.

It was soft and warm with the sweet taste of wedding cake with the playful bite of alcohol and he was oh so greedy, taking it all and pressing her close with his hand on her back and her skin beneath his fingers and it was dizzying with his eyes closed, and he knew that was the alcohol, but that didn't stop it from feeling good, from feeling right as the words to the song washed over him, voicing his thoughts with startling accuracy. God himself did make us into corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay. Or maybe it was the other way around and the words of the song and filled up his head because every other thought had escaped the moment his lips touched Jane's. That would certainly explain the poor sentence structure of his stream of consciousness.

Her smirk broadened into an actual smile when he gave her his crooked half smile. It was contagious and always caused her to smile back. His words and the way he was holding her made her feel like melting inside. She felt her face flush with pleasure and her heart picked up again. She almost felt silly, but it was a good kind of silly and she didn't want the feeling to go away.

As he drew closer her eyes fluttered closed and she barely registered his whispered words because she was already moving to meet him. And then he kissed her and it was wonderful and it was right and she didn't ever want to stop. Her hand slid up from his shoulder and she laced her fingers in his hair. She had completely forgotten that they were standing in the middle of a dance floor at someone else's wedding.

She didn't want to draw away, but eventually their kiss broke. She kept her arms wrapped around his neck, not wanting to move away. "Okay, I think I get it now." She said, then laughed at herself. She realized now that his advances hadn't exactly been well disguised, but Jane was not one to quickly pick up on things like that.

He bit back a groan when she broke the kiss and turned it into a nearly silent sigh. He moved his hand from her neck to join his other, wrapping around her waist and holding her close. He smirked at her words and at her laughter. "Are you sure?" he asked, leaning forward and whispering in her ear. "Because I can explain again," he teased as he stepped side-to-side slowly along with the music. As if to prove his point he kissed her on her jaw, just below her ear.

Now that everything was happening, Jane couldn't believe that it had taken so long. She did have to admit, though, that this was probably mostly her fault. This thought didn't stay in her mind long, however. When he kissed her jawline, Jane whispered coyly in his ear "How much later are you obliged to stay?"

Eoin smiled into her neck at her words. He never would have guessed that she would respond that way. Hope and dream, yes. Rationally expect, no. He supposed he didn't think she'd be blind to his advances forever, but since it seemed like it had been forever, he thought it would still take more time once she finally noticed. Apparently not. Well, he was pleased, anyway.

He moved his lips to her ear and answered her. "I'm not," he told her, and it was true. It was at least a quarter past ten. Everything important was done- the speeches, the cake, the flower toss. They weren't the first to leave. He would not be missed.

He quickly kissed her cheek and pulled away. His right hand dropped from it's place around her back and his left slid up and over her shoulder and his fingers ran across her arm until they found her right hand. He took hold of it and brought their joined hands down from around his neck. He turned and headed back towards their table with a grin, tugging her along with him and trying hard not to skip.

Jane couldn't help but laugh at Eoin's reaction, something she seemed to be doing a lot of in the last few minutes. But that was the way it was. He had that simple yet extraordinary ability to make her laugh and smile. He didn't even necessarily have to say anything, his own smile was enough to cause her grin back. At the moment he seemed barely short of throwing her over his shoulder, but he managed to exercise some self control.

---------------------------------------
It was late morning by the time Jane awoke the next day. She rolled over and nestled up next to Eoin, who appeared to still be sleeping. Her hand found his and she laced her fingers through his. As she went over the previous night in her head, she couldn't quite remember how they had appeared in her flat. Until she recalled that they had done just that, simply appeared there. After they'd left the reception, Jane had pulled Eoin out of view of anyone and apparated them there.

She didn't quite want to get out of bed yet, so decided to not disturb Eoin and wait for him to wake. It was certainly nice enough to just lie with her head resting against his shoulder. Once again she was struck by how silly she had been to wait so long, but she supposed it was also nice to have been friends first. It was good to know that their relationship was already strong.

Something was happening to his fingers and it woke him up. He supposed he was already going that direction, anyway. As his awareness grew he realized the something happening to his fingers was other fingers and the weight on his shoulder he had assumed was his cat was, in fact, Jane Lester's head. Heck. Yes.

He became fully awake at the realization and casually rolled over on top of Jane, pinning their laced fingers into the mattress and resting most of his weight there so he could look down at her. "Sneaky," he accused with a smirk. Then he was finished looking and leaned down and pressed his lips to hers as he snaked his free arm up under her back and buried his hand her hair.

Jane grinned up at Eoin as he rolled over and accused her of being sneaky. When he leaned down to kiss her, she smiled against his lips as she kissed him back, she could get used to this. Her own free hand slid down his back. Unfortunately, their kiss eventually broke and Jane smiled up at him. "How about we just stay here? Yeah, I think that's an excellent idea." She said, her hand moving to his chest.

However, it was late morning and she was actually getting quite hungry. Her stomach seemed to respond to this thought as it started growling. She dropped her arm over her face, half groaning half laughing.

Eoin laughed into her shoulder at her tummy rumbling. He didn't blame her- he was hungry, too. He was almost always hungry. He kissed her clavicle and then pushed himself up. "New plan," he said, rolling off of her. "I'm making breakfast." He sat up and swung his legs out over the side of the bed. He stood up, gave her a grin and a wink, and the started the search for his underpants.

"What have you got in your kitchen?" he asked as he searched. "Flour? Eggs? Aha!-" he found them and picked them up. "Milk?" he continued asking as he stepped into his boxers.

Breakfast sounded like an excellent plan and the fact that Eoin was going to make it was even better. Jane had never been able to cook. Part of the problem was that she'd barely ever had any occasion to learn. Even after she left Hogwarts, the reservation had had its own team of house elves to cook for the researchers and keepers. She'd never cared to learn either, her mother had tried when she was younger, but she would have none it, preferring to play Quidditch outside.

Unfortunately this caused her kitchen to be rather bare. She looked at Eoin as if flour was some rare potion ingredient that was only found in Estonia and had to be picked during the full moon. "I'm pretty sure there are eggs and there should be milk. Coffee, though, there's definitely coffee." As Eoin started to get dressed, Jane followed suit and started to get dressed, or at least half dressed, with just underwear and a t-shirt.

Despite what Briar thought, Eoin was a fine cook. Not as good as Briar, or as good as their father, but better than the average person. He made a face when Jane mentioned coffee. How was it that he had ended up surrounded by coffee drinkers? "What about tea? And bread?" he asked as he tilted his head slightly to the side and watched her get dressed. It was moments like these that made it very disappointing that food was necessary for life.

Jane laughed at the face he made. "There's tea too... I think. I blame the reservation. That's where I started drinking coffee. Though I wouldn't bank on there being bread." When Jane ate at home it was usually take out or delivery. She grabbed his hand and pulled him out of her room.

Her flat was fairly modest considering the fact that she earned a good living. It was comfortable, though, and she liked it, plus she was too lazy to move even if she'd wanted to. It was very clearly inhabited by a witch, with magic in almost every corner. Her owl was asleep in its cage by the window, a racing broom propped against the wall next to that. The bookshelf which flanked her work desk, were filled with books on spells and dragons. Sleeping soundly on a the desk, across the paperwork from the Ministry, was a replica of a Swedish shortsnout about the size of a small cat, which got up and stretched its wings when Jane and Eoin walked out.

Jane made her way over to the kitchen area and opened the fridge. There were indeed a few eggs and maybe half a carton of milk. Otherwise the contents was rather sad: a take out box from a Chinese restaurant, mustard and a couple of Fire Whiskeys. "Hmm, it looks like you might have to work your own magic." She said, looking over her shoulder at Eoin.
