"Right. Right, I am fine."

"If you could pull your shirt up."

Briar complied, holding it above her stomach with her free hand. "I can't believe you're here." She looked up at Elliott and for a brief second, she looked like she might cry. But she blinked twice and smiled, "I'm kind of relieved it's you instead." She paused and considered, laughing lightly, "Really relieved actually."

"Alright. This will be a little cold."

She sucked in her breath when the gel hit her stomach and turned her head to look at the monitor, unintentionally squeezing Elliott's hand.

"And ..." he repositioned the device to get a better angle, "That is your baby."

Her eyes widened and she laughed, grinning, "Definitely a step up from a bean." She tore her eyes away to look up at Elliott. "What do you think? Dad." she asked softly, unable to stop smiling even for a second.

Elliott smiled back at her and returned her hand squeeze automatically. He fixed his eyes on the monitor. He couldn't make out any definite baby type shape. But the tech spoke, and sure enough, there it was. Clearly a baby this time. He laughed when Briar said it was a step up form a bean and looked down at her. He grinned like an idiot at her words. When Eoin called him 'Dad' it made Elliott want to punch him in the face. It felt entirely opposite coming from Briar. "Definitely looks less like and alien and more like a baby," he told her, then brought her hand up to her lips and kissed her knuckles.

She laughed at his observation and looked back at the tech, resting the fingertips of her free hand on the side of her stomach. "Can you tell? What it is, I mean."

"I'm fairly certain, but if she'd hold still a little longer I could make sure."

Her eyes widened again, "You did just say 'she' didn't you?"

"There we go." He froze the image on the screen and pointed to what was apparently, to the trained eye, the signifier. She didn't know the difference. "Yes, I did."

"And you're positive. Because two seconds ago you weren't sure and now apparently you are. And this is a very big deal, in case you were unaware of that. A very big deal."

He smiled, "I know it is. I'm sure."

She shook her head, "No you don't understand." She paused, "My brother just won ...a lot of money." She was laughing at how ridiculous it was that that was the first thing she thought of, and the next second she was crying. She moved the hand that was not holding Elliott's up to her forehead, looking nothing if not relieved. "I'm sorry. I'm not crazy. I'm just so glad. I mean, really, so, just-" She'd been hoping hard for a girl. Partly because it be easier for her, partly because she sort of thought it would be easier for Elliott to love a child that wasn't his if that child was a girl. It was stupid, and incredibly selfish and cowardly and unnecessarily mistrusting, so she'd kept it to herself.

Elliott was a little shocked at Briar's reaction. Not completely shocked. This kind of behavior wasn't totally unfamiliar to him, given her condition...but he hadn't realized she'd wanted a girl quite that badly. But maybe she didn't. Maybe it was still just the hormones.

He smiled down at her and moved his free hand to her cheek and used his thumb to wipe away her tears. "Hey now...you don't have to apologize for being happy." If this was what she wanted, then Elliott was glad, too. Honestly, the past few months had been very stressful for Briar. If this made things easier for her, he was perfectly alright with that.

Just then, the door opened creaked partly open. "Hey, uh, I think I'm okay now if you're okay," Eoin ventured.

Briar smiled up at him, "I am happy." She quickly wiped the back of her hand across her cheeks to dry the rest of her tears. "Yeah! Come in!"

Eoin slipped through the door and came and stood beside Elliott. He could tell that Briar had been crying, but she was also smiling brightly. He put a hand on her knee. Then he forced himself to look at the monitor. Okay, well, that wasn't so bad. Very baby like. Still inside his sister, though. He put his other hand on Elliott's back. "So...what's the verdict?"

Elliott looked at Briar- she smiled and nodded at him. He looked over at Eoin. "That's your niece," he told him, smiling.

"You're having a girl?!" he looked over at Briar. "Also, how much money did I just win?"

Elliott smacked him.

"Thank you, Elliott!" She laughed, "Is that all you can think about!" She couldn't reach her brother to punch him, so she gave Elliott a light shove into him instead. "For God's sake, Eoin," she paused and laughed again, "A hundred and twenty pounds."

"Alright!" Eoin would have loved a high five at this moment, but could tell he wasn't going to get one. He patted Elliott on the shoulder instead. "Also, no! That's not all I can think about," he tried to sound indignant, but behind the grinning he pretty much fail. "I am also thinking about what you're going to name her."

"Definitely not after you," Elliott told him with a laugh.

Eoin tried to act offended. "What, no little Eoina? You wound me, Elliott." He looked over to Briar. "Seriously, Briar, any contenders?" he asked his twin.

She threw up her hands, "How should I know what to name her, I just found out!" She hadn't even thought about it. Not at all. She'd made the mistake early on of thinking too much about the future. It just made her nervous, so now she was trying to take things one at a time. "Do either of you have any bright ideas?"

"Jeeze, Briar, keep your knickers on." Eoin took his hand off her knee and rolled his eyes.

"Eoin," Elliott said, giving him a look that clearly said 'shut up.'

Elliott took hold of Briar's hand once more. "You've got plenty of time to think of names," he assured her.

He looked back at the tech. "Everything else look good? She's growing alright and everything?" Elliott asked, changing the subject.

Briar nodded at Elliott's facial expression, "Yeah, shut up, Eoin." She grinned triumphantly. Being pregnant was excellent; it meant she was always right. She sighed, "We'll figure it out. There is plenty of time."

The tech smiled and nodded once, "I didn't want to interrupt. She looks very healthy. Her size is normal, her heartbeat is strong, you have nothing at all to worry about."

She beamed, "I wasn't worried. She moves around too much not to be healthy."

"Fantastic!" Eoin enthused. "Right then, Elliott," he clapped the other man on the back, "we're having a smoke to celebrate."

"That's when the baby's born, Eoin." Elliott rolled his eyes, but was still grinning uncontrollably at the good news.

"No, cigars are for when she's born. Cigarettes are perfectly appropriate for whatever occasion this is. Mainly it's Eoin Has A Nicotine Craving, honestly, but Hurrah Baby Girl gives it a more celebratory feeling.

"I'll bring him right back; promise," he told Briar, giving her his 'Please Let Me Have My
Way' grin. "I did get him here in the first place, after all."

Elliott laughed at Eoin. "Stop groveling; I'll go with you." He actually agreed with Eoin. It sounded like a good idea amidst all this craziness.

"Darling, I love you," he told Briar, then leaned over and kissed her forehead.

"Sorry again that we're all bloody mad," Elliott apologized to the tech and let Eoin drag him out the door.

The tech had left and Briar was sitting up when he came back, still trying without much luck to get the rest of the ultrasound gel off of her stomach. "You're going to destroy your taste buds, you realize," she warned, looking up and raising an eyebrow. A fate worse than death by lung cancer, in her opinion.

Eoin leaned against the wall a few meters down from the entrance to the building and took out his pack of cigarettes. He offered one to Elliott and he took it willingly.

"Mayfair?" Elliott asked him with a smirk.

"Beggars can't be choosers," Eoin said, returning the smirk. He held up the pack and showed Elliott the back. It had a warning that took up 40% of the back packaging. It said 'Smoking can damage the sperm and decreases fertility'. "That's why I do it," Eoin joked.

Elliott laughed and held up his cigarette for Eoin to light. Eoin lit it, and then his own. Elliott joined Eoin in leaning against the wall. They both took a drag.

"So. How are you with...everything." Eoin asked with a laugh.

Elliott laughed. "A bit mad." He shook his head. "I dunno. Really glad that I'm not going to be raising a little Kevin Homilton clone, honestly." He rolled his eyes. He didn't think he was going to be so relieved that it was a girl, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized he really was.

Eoin laughed. "You know she's going to look just like him anyway."

Elliott shrugged, still grinning. "She'll be beautiful; just like her mother." He took a drag.

"You sap," Eoin told him, making a face and taking another drag. "You have any names you like?" Eoin really was curious. He couldn't help that Briar was being a spaz about it.

"For my red-headed step-child?" Elliott returned. "I'm not sure how much of a say I really get."

Eoin smacked him with his free hand. "Whatever!"

"What? Kevin is still her natural father. He's going to be around. Just because he can't keep an appointment doesn't mean it's always going to be like that. There's some intense shit going down in our world right now. It'll be spilling over into yours at any moment, really," he finished, taking a drag.

"You think?" Eoin was a bit surprised at that. He took an extra long hit. This was troublesome.

Elliott nodded. "Kevin's not a flake. He's a huge prick and I've never liked him... But if work is calling him away all the time..."

"The stuff Colin's been talking about?" Eoin asked.

"Probably. How the hell am I supposed to know what Colin Beckett tells you?"

"You don't talk to him?"

Elliott laughed. "I met him once. At that Christmas party at Briar's. He's notorious. I can't hang around with him like you do. Not if I don't want to have people at our Ministry start to question my loyalties."

Eoin rolled his eyes. "I'm so glad I'm a waiter."

"Great use of your Oxford degree, that." Elliott returned his eye roll.

"My degree is highly sought after in my field." Eoin quipped.

"So. My niece is going to have two dads. You're not worried about her going butch, are you?" Eoin changed the subject.

Elliott shoved him. "No! Also, so what! She can love whoever she wants. Besides, if she's a lesbian she won't go getting herself knocked up, and that's a relief already."

"Like Briar?" Eoin leered at him.

Elliott blew a smoke in his face. "No. Briar is a successful young adult, perfectly capable of taking care of herself and any children she may have. I meant if it were to happen when she's a teenager. 'Cause, you know, just like with Briar, freakishly tall gingers will always be around to seduce pretty young girls. Isn't it genetic for girls to fall for men like their fathers?"

"So she'll fall for a brunette midget," Eoin told him.

Elliott rolled his eyes, but still smiled. "I'm taller than you, Eoin."

"Psh, barely." He smiled at Elliott. "You're a good man, Fix," he was, for once, serious. Not that his tone let on that he was at all.

"You should give it a try sometime," Elliott teased. He took one last pull on his cigarette, extinguished it on the wall, and then flicked it into the nearby bin.

"Too much work," Eoin quipped back, finishing his cigarette in the same way as Elliott.

"Lets go back," Elliott instructed, pushing himself off the wall.

Eoin shook his head. "No, you go ahead. I'm gonna bail."

Elliott gave him an incredulous look.

"You're the good man, not me," Eoin reminded him with a smirk. "I don't think I can deal with anymore of that stuff. Besides, she's done with me anyhow. Give her my love."

"Alright, will do," Elliott clapped his shoulder by way of farewell. Eoin returned it. "Sod off, you loony," Elliott told him with a smirk and then made his way back to Briar.

----

Elliott smirked at Briar's comment. "I doubt a few cigs a month is going to permanently damage any part of me. Eoin's going through a lot more, though, so you might want to save a speech for him." Elliott smoked socially, that was all. He rarely, if ever, bought his own.

He sat down by her on the table and checked his watch. "I can't stay much longer," he told her apologetically. "Are you going to be okay?"

She scoffed, "Eoin is a lost cause. That, and he can't stand it when I try to tell him what to do." She grinned and added, "But even if you can't stand it and even if you don't listen, you at least have to sit there and pretend to." Briar hadn't counted on her brother coming back; he'd always been good about giving her space when she really needed it, even if the real reason he was doing it was to get as far away from the hospital as he could. She let her shirt fall back over her stomach and nodded, "No, I know you can't stay, you should get back. But you didn't leave me in the very incapable hands of my brother. I'm going to definitely be okay, now, don't worry." She looked down and stared at his knee, "What about you, are you going to be okay?"

He put his arm around her shoulders and gave her a light squeeze. "I'll be fine. I feel like I'm in some sort of strange alternate reality a lot of the time, but this made it feel very real. I'm glad I came." He kissed her on her temple and looked down at her belly. There was a baby girl in there. Four months from now she'd be out in the world. Wild.
