11:45 AM Wednesday 19 May 2038 "Oh." "I'm sorry, Briar. I can't predict when work will call me away." "Oh," she repeated, gripping the rubber-coated arm rest of the waiting room chair with her free hand. "I wanted to be there so badly, I tried to-" "I know," she affirmed, interrupting him quietly. She switched her cell phone to her other hand and pressed it back to her ear. "I know," she said again, bringing her elbow up onto the arm of the chair an resting her forehead against her palm. "Do you? Do you know?" Briar squeezed her eyes shut, preparing for what was starting to become a routine conversation. "Yes Kevin, I do. I understand how busy you are." "No, I don't think you do. Because if you did, you would stop trying to make me feel so guilty." "If I were trying to make you feel guilty, I would have kept my original appointment and just let you miss out." This was her fourth try at adapting to fit into his unpredictable schedule. She'd changed the appointment so many times that the nurse who checked her in that morning had joked that if she kept it up, Briar would be seeing the baby before she'd see a second ultrasound. "You can't be here, I get it." "Do you think I can't here that?" "Hear what, Kev?" she asked wearily. "It's in the tone of your voice," he paused and she pressed the heel of her hand harder against her forehead, "And don't call me Kev. You don't get to do that anymore." She'd liked him better when he was just sad. He'd been much easier to deal with when he was wandering around like a lost puppy. But now that he wasn't completely pathetic, now that he had realized how much she'd hurt him, he had been behaving like a complete ass. Now he was talking about custody and paternal rights, and now she couldn't afford to be in denial anymore either. Which was too bad, because her life had looked much less frightening when she'd been able to believe she and Kevin could work things out civilly. "What is," she threw back, starting to get annoyed. "I know you. I know what you're thinking, what you're leaving out." She sighed in lieu of a response. "That Elliott would be there." "No Kevin, that is not what I'm thinking. Because Elliott is currently sitting in the House of Commons and is usually just as busy as you are. He couldn't come, either. The only difference is that when I asked him, he could tell me that for sure. I'm not disappointed, because he didn't promise he would come and then leave me alone at, pretty literally, the last possible second. And I know he would be here if there were any way he could be. You I'm just ... I don't know any more." He started to say something, but she talked over him until he gave up, "And do you know what, Kevin? Do you know what really gets me? Elliott doesn't need to be here in the same way you do. This isn't his baby, not yet anyway. He doesn't have the same responsibility you do." "But you wish he did. I know you do. And guess what, Briar. I'm with you on this one. The way you treat me, like I'm second-rate, or like I'll never be as good of a father as he will ... I mean, christ. I could just walk away if this whole thing were Elliott's bloody mistake, couldn't I? And wouldn't that make everyone happy, if this were his problem. But it's not." She sat up, switching her phone to her other hand again. Her voice was quiet, but shocked, "What did you just say?" "Fuck, I-" She cut him off, "You just referred to our child as a problem. That's what you said." "I'm sorr-" "You can't be sorry enough." "Look, that-" "You're right Kevin, I do wish it had been Elliott. Because he would never, never say something like that." "Bri, that isn't what I-" "No. No. It is what you meant. And don't call me Bri." She ended the call without giving him a chance to give the apology he had obviously been trying to. She knew he was sorry, she knew he wouldn't have said it if they hadn't been fighting so much lately. He wasn't a bad guy. But that wasn't the point, because he had said it, and that was enough. She just stared at her phone. She hated this. She hated being alone. There was a woman to her left sitting with her husband, watching calmly while her baby gummed on an oversized foam Lego. And in the corner there was a young couple who were obviously terrified. But even a terrified someone was a someone. She didn't even have that. She bit her lip and dialed Eoin's number; her brother was not exactly the first person she would have chosen but it was him or no one. Unsurprisingly, the call went to voicemail. It was still technically morning, after all. "Hi ... I guess Kevin isn't coming. And Elliott had to work. I just, I'm really tired of being alone every time I go to the doctor. If you can ... if you want to come, my appointment is at noon. It's alright if you can't." She hung up and looked around for a minute before realizing she didn't say where she was. She called him back, waited for the beep, and added, "At London Royal. If that wasn't obvious. And really, it's fine. I'm fine. I'm supposed to find out, you know, what it is ... I thought maybe you might want to come. Anyway. Bye." |

Eoin heard his phone the first time in his dream. It didn't seem that strange for She's Electric to start playing while he was apparently cliff diving. Having is stop suddenly was a bit peculiar though, especially mid jump. When the song started again just as suddenly he realized what was actually happening and woke up. He groped around for his phone, finally grasping it just as the song fell silent again. Well shit. He opened his eyes and sat up. The Prime Minister yawned at him from the foot of his bed. He shook his head to wake up just as Jimmy Stewart's voice asked "Holy mackerel, what goes on here?!" from his phone. So his sister called twice in a row and left a voicemail. This did not bode well. He called his voicemail box as he got out of bed, then put it on speaker phone and set it on his nightstand to listen to it while he got dressed hastily. Eoin grew instantly more awake and agitated at the contents of the message. He sighed and let out an audible "Fuuuuuuuck" as he buckled his belt. Well, that settled it. It was murdering time. He rolled his eyes at Briar's insistence that she would be fine as he pulled his shirt over his head. He grabbed his phone and shoved it into his pocket, stepped into his closest matching pair of shoes, grabbed his helmet and was off. --------------------- Several broken traffic laws and at least two middle fingers later Eoin found himself entering the waiting area, helmet under his right arm, with a few minutes to spare. He hesitated for a moment as he walked through the door. Pregnant people were a little unnerving. He still wasn't used to Briar's baby bump. He probably never would be. She was only going to get bigger. There was, after all, a baby growing in there. It was very strange. He got over it, smiled at Briar, and put his helmet under the chair as he sat down next to her. "Hey Miss Fine," he teased as he leaned over and kissed her cheek. He slouched into his chair and immediately started texting with his phone. |

"Thanks for hurrying, but you could try not to get yourself killed before you can be a bad influence on my kid," she teased back. It was easy to forget how much she liked having her twin around when the reasons for most of his visits were laundry or food related. She liked to think she was usually pretty level-headed, but the reasonable Briar had been absent for weeks and someone had to be around to make sure she didn't do anything stupid. Given that Eoin had been the instigator in a good deal of the stupid things she'd done in her life, he was probably the best candidate for the job. She studied his face for a minute while he texted, her own fingertips tapping out a rhythm on the arm rest. She scanned the text on his t-shirt and cracked a half-smile, "What are the chances of getting one of those free hugs, do you think."

Eoin rolled his eyes at Briar's jab and continued typing. "The hospitals only three miles away. I could have walked and probably been here at the same time," he shrugged, then put his phone away. He quirked an eyebrow at her question about free hugs. Then he realized which shirt he was wearing and smirked. "One hundred percent." He brought his arms around her shoulders and hugged her into his side. Not too tightly, though, because the arm rest got in the way. He kissed her again, on her temple this time, and let out a sigh that tried hard not to be frustrated but mostly failed. "Sorry it's me and not, you know, a f-" he was going to swear but this room also contained babies and so he managed not to "-eckless ginger." |

She closed her eyes and leaned into the hug as much as she could, exhaling slowly. "I'm not," she replied simply, but honestly. "I'd take you any day." As much as she wanted Kevin to want to be there, he apparently didn't, and that only upset her. "I could kill him. I really could. In this moment, I could just-" she laughed abruptly and without humor, shaking her head. She slouched in the chair, leaning her head back against the wall and sighing. |

He gave her a squeeze, then let go with one arm but kept the other around her shoulders. "You leave the killing to me. Such strenuous activity by you pregnant types is general frowned upon." He leaned back in his chair and absent-mindedly checked his phone with his recently freed hand. Just past twelve. No new messages-that part he knew as he hadn't heard it make a sound. Speaking of sounds, though... He flicked it to vibrate mode and put it back in his pocket. "So," he changed the subject, "are we placing bets on the sex of this baby or what?" She turned her head to look at him. "Five pound buy-in," she raised an eyebrow and patted her stomach, "The apparent consensus is that it's a boy. So if I were you, I'd put my money on the underdog. You could be a rich man." She grinned, teasing, "Or at least rich enough to take your dirty clothes to the laundromat next week." |

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a fiver, and slapped it into her hand. "I'm in. Put me down for girl. Winning won't make me go to the laudromat, though," he smirked. "Who's been betting for a boy? I would have thought girl would have been more popular." |

She lifted her hips and stuffed the bill into her back pocket. "Then buy yourself a drink in my honour," she offered as an alternative, laughing. Smirking, she settled back into the chair and stared at the wall opposite her. "Everyone. Noah, the waitstaff, dad. Everyone. Probably counting on my streak of bad luck continuing." |

"Psh. Whatever. That wouldn't be bad luck. I mean, unless he turned out like me," he teased. He tapped his foot anxiously. He didn't like waiting. He pulled his cell phone out again and started typing. He looked up. "What's the hold up, anyway?" |

She raised an eyebrow. "Yeah. Or like his father," she shot back lightly. She sighed and closed her eyes, "It's a hospital, Eoin. Nothing is fast in a hospital." She twisted her ring around her finger and opened one eye when the door on the far wall of the room opened again. "Briar?" She leaned forward and punched her brother's leg gently, "Spoke too soon!" Pushing herself up out of the chair, she added, "And stop texting! This is important!" She shot him a look and nodded towards the door. |

He rolled his eyes at her when she told him to stop texting. "Yeah, so's this," he countered, finishing his text as he stood up. He finished quickly, though, and did put his phone away as he followed after her. He wasn't really looking forward to this part, either. The baby on the screen part was exciting, he supposed. But the twin sister's belly covered with goop part did not appeal to him at all. |

"Seriously?" she asked, picking the conversation back up when the nurse left a few minutes later. She grinned and swung her feet, "Who is it that's so much more important than your best sister? Is it a girl?" She was starting to feel anxious, she needed distractions. |

He gave her a disaffected look. "Mmm, yes, three actually." He rolled his eyes and slouched further into his chair. "No one's more important than you. Some people do tie, though. Occasionally," he smirked. He started tapping his foot. He wanted to be be supportive of Briar, but the situation was making him antsy. |

She rolled her eyes in mock disgust and turned to lay on her back on the exam chair, covering her face with her hand. "You're a pig, you know that?" she joked. She turned her head to look at him, "And Eoin, I know you hate this stuff ... so I mean ... I'm really glad you came, but ...." He was uncomfortable. Pretty obviously so. But her offer to give him an out was interrupted by a knock. "Briar?" Briar sighed softly, then sat up and smiled. "Yeah." The tech looked down at Eoin, "And -" Briar cut him off before he could make any awkward assumptions, "My brother. It's kind of a long... deal." She laughed shortly and the man smiled. "Ah. Well. Are you ready to see your baby," he asked, flipping through her chart. She nodded and bit her lip, "Yep. I think so, any way." |

Eoin nodded along at the tech. He was as ready as he would ever be, probably. Only....his phone buzzed continuously in his pocket. It was a phone call- not a text message. He stood up and pulled it out of his pocket and scurried for the door. "Hold that thought- two seconds- I promise-" he shut the door behind him and answered the phone immediately when he stepped into the hall. "Where the fuck are you?" he hissed into the phone. He immediately started down the hall. "Don't move. I'm coming to get you." He turned a corner at a near sprint and burst through the door into the waiting area. He hung up and shoved his phone back into his pocket at the sight of the other man. He grabbed his arm and gave a tug. "This way," he instructed. Elliott had nearly dropped his phone at Eoin's sudden appearance, and that only served to make him look more frazzled. He had Apparated in semi-public places to get here so quickly, and his nerves had made for sloppy magic. Loud cracking noises at both ends. Upon further inspection it seemed as though his tie hadn't made the trip. Well, better that than an arm. He let Eoin drag him through the door, apologizing all the while. "Sorry, the receptionist would not let me back. She was very insistent about patient privacy and not having been informed about a second visitor and-" "I get it, shut up." Eoin cut him off and let go of his arm. "Briar didn't tell me-" "I said I get it." "What's gotten into you?" "My sister has another human growing inside of her. It's very unnerving." They rounded the corner. Elliott laughed, but soon realized Eoin wasn't joking. "Seriously?" "Shut up!" Eoin didn't like that he felt this way. He just didn't see anyway to fix it, either. "Just think about later. In September. There'll be an actual baby and you'll be an uncle." Eoin glared at him. Like he hadn't already thought of that. "Yeah, and you'll be a father. Sort of." Elliott hit him in the chest. Eoin laughed, then stopped moving suddenly and grabbed Elliott by his lapels. "This is it." He glaced at the door to the room. "I think." He smirked. "Don't fuck up." He gave Elliott's cheek two sharp smacks. Elliott rolled his eyes and gave Eoin a shove, then pushed his face away. "Grow up," he told Eoin with a smirk. Eoin shook his head. "You first. Dad." He knocked on the door and called out to Briar. "Is it safe to come back in?" he asked. |

"Are you kidding?" she called after him as he hurried out of the room. Given that he didn't answer, she figured that no, he was probably not kidding. She stared at the ceiling for a second, chewing on her bottom lip and holding her left hand protectively over her stomach. "He's kind of freaked out," she explained, "He's not a bad brother, he's great, he's just ... kind of freaked out." The tech switched on the machine, "Because babies are parasites?" Briar laughed and nodded, "Yeah, I think that's it." She sighed softly, "We can just start." He raised an eyebrow and shook his head, "Absolutely not. He'll be back, we can wait. He came all the way over here to be with you, that says something." She grinned, "Well, actually, he lives like five minutes away...." She stopped and frowned at the door; she could hear two voices, but they were too muffled to tell who they belonged to. Obviously one would be Eoin. She sighed loudly and closed her eyes; she couldn't handle Kevin right now but she wasn't sure how she would be able to tell him to leave, either. Given that she was not going to be speaking to him for a while after what he'd done. Eoin, on the other hand, could say whatever he wanted to her ex, "Yes. But if that's Kevin, tell him to go home. I don't want him here now." Edited by Briar Fix, May 25 2011, 10:08:30 PM.

Elliott winced when Briar mentioned Kevin. He was so glad he wasn't here. Well, not glad that he had bailed. That part sucked. But glad that he didn't have to be around him. He moved to open the door, but Eoin stopped him short. "Give a shout when it gets to the good part, okay? I might be freaking out right now," Eoin told him in a low voice. "Sure thing," Elliott nodded at him, giving him an incredulous look. "It's mum!" Eoin called through the door with a smirk. Elliott shoved Eoin again and stuck his head through the door. "It's me, actually," he said, then stepped the rest of the way through the door and let it shut behind him. "Eoin's a bit mental," he told the tech apologetically. "And I sadly mean that seriously," he told Briar. "I told him I'd let him know when things really got going." He smiled at her and put his hands in his pockets. He didn't really know what he was supposed to do now. He was late to the game and he didn't know the rules. |

Briar opened one eye when she heard the familiar voice, both confused and relieved that it wasn't Kevin. "Elliott?" She sat up, "But you were busy, you couldn't come." She glanced at the door and then back at him. Sure, Eoin was better than being alone, but he definitely hadn't been her first choice. There were other times when he was, but not when doctors and the possibility of her becoming an emotional mess were involved. "It was Eoin, wasn't it. He didn't make this dramatic, did he?" she interrogated, noting that Elliott did look quite a bit more ...rumpled than normal. She was talking fast, "Because if he said I'm freaking out, I'm not. I'm fine." She laid back down when the tech pushed gently on her shoulder. "I'm not freaking out, I'm fine," she affirmed, clearly freaking out. She was excited. Excited and nervous and a little terrified, she just hadn't noticed before that moment because she'd been too preoccupied thinking about how furious she was with Kevin. |

He shrugged when she claimed that he was busy and couldn't come. It was true. He was busy. But Kevin was supposed to have been here, so it was okay. This appointment was made so Kevin could be here. It hadn't mattered before that he couldn't come. But Kevin wasn't here. That changed things. He grinned at her and shook his head when she said she wasn't freaking out. He knew what to do now. He walked over to her side, the side that was free from ultrasound machines and a hospital employee he probably should have introduced himself to but hadn't and now it was maybe too late... He took his hand out of his pocket and used it to hold one of hers. "Clearly you're fine," he teased. "Eoin's freaking out. He didn't say anything about you freaking out. Just that he was here instead... and that he was freaking out. Not in those words, mind..." he shrugged again and smiled at her. |
