Subject: Statute of Secrecy Conspiracy: Transcript Excerpt #AF009
Date: January 14, 2036

I am pleased to report a breakthrough in our ongoing investigation into the conspiracy against the Statute of Secrecy. Colin Beckett, publisher of the weekly alternative paper Aparecium, has been implicated by his own older brother in a discussion caught by our covert conversation transcribers, as evidenced below.

Liam Beckett: ...Statute of Secrecy isn't just going to disappear. And the Ministry won't take a slight against its policies lightly. There'd be outcries of libel...the truth of the article doesn't matter. I only barely convinced Colin not to publish. It's only a matter of time, I suppose.

Unknown: Hell, Beckett, that doesn't seem all bad. You had me worried.

Liam Beckett: It is bad! My kids are all at Hogwarts. I can't afford for my reckless younger brother to jeopardize their futures! Think of what could happen if the muggles knew about us...Besides, Elizabeth is in her last term. She wants to join the Ministry when she graduates.

Unknown: One controversial uncle never kept anyone out of the Ministry. [pause] Except that time when everyone found out your uncle was a werewolf. [pause] Right. Sorry. I concede. Controversial uncles definitely make a difference to the Ministry.

Liam Beckett: Thank you. Still, I would hope the Ministry puts more stock in my unwavering loyalty than it does in Colin's political ramblings. Besides, circulation for Aparecium is fairly low.

Unknown: My son subscribes. He likes the band reviews.

Liam Beckett: You should probably subscribe, too. Just in case. I won't always be able to convince Colin to keep quiet, and you're better off knowing what sort of rubbish is going into your son's head, anyway.

[end excerpt]

I hereby request that your department put Colin Beckett on the official criminal watch list and develop a list of his known associates. I also suggest you take up a subscription with Aparecium to monitor it for political extremism. I have already sent a request to ██████████████ in Public Relations to have an article standing by for the Prophet questioning the validity of Aparecium and its contributors, should such an action become necessary in the future.

Signed.
