I'm interested in the Redwine iMod which is 4th Gen iPod modified the internal parts to improve audio performance. The iMod only works with 4th Gen iPod. Red Wine Audio-supplied 60GB iPod Photo with modified internal parts and ship to outside US cost US$499. But I could buy 5.5 Gen iPod Video 80GB without iMod cost only US$349 which provide more storage, brighter screen, longer battery life and new software features. Do you think that I have to pay more and pick the iMod or I just buy the 5.5 Gen iPod Video and save the balance? Any comments? Anyone with iMod? |

Don't forget that to use the iMod, you would have to factor in the cost of an external amp plus interconnects. The headphone-out is converted to a true line-out, so you wouldn't be able to plug in a set of headphones and expect it to work. So the question you would need to ask yourself is this: Just how much more would you value the perceived increase in audio quality over the additional cost? Alternatively, you can buy a line-out dock to use with your 5G iPod. While the SQ might arguably not be as good as the iMod, I still think it's more than good enough, especially with a good set of interconnects and amp. |

I have headphone amp and dock interconnect so to this upgrade only affect the interconnect i need to change to 1/8 mini jack. So, with iMod (US$499) + interconnect (US$100+) cost = US$599+. But, with iPod Video 80GB (US$349) with my existing interconnect cost = US$349. Do you think that iMod (US$599+) is it sound that I perceived more worth for money than the iPod Video (US$349)? Is iMod sound quality worth US$250 more than iPod Video? |

Lol, ultimately it is only for you to decide. I have heard the iMod, and it sounds very, very good indeed. It's a true line-out, rather than those psuedo line-outs that all the other DAP's have; dock or no dock. I would suggest you come to one of the mini-gatherings at Jaben one Friday evening. There are some guys there who have the iModded Apple. Ask nicely for an audition. Nothing beats hearing it for yourself lol

Hi scanfiend, thanks for reply. I have difficulty to meet on Friday. In your opinion do you think that iMod is really worth to upgrade? iMod which is 4G iPod with great sound quality. 5.5G iPod Video with lower sound quality but provided more storage, brighter screen, longer battery life and new software features. What will you choose if happen to you? |

Just a small reminder. The 5/5.5Gen iPods are much better over the stock 4Gen iPods. Many of u guys have misunderstood that the 4th Gen has better sound quality over all the iPods. |

Hi Audio, I have listened to the imod and the difference is really quite obvious compared to a normal ipod. But I do have to agree with Ah Dui that the 5 or 5.5G iPod has a better line out compare with the 4G iPod. Whether the difference between a 5G and iMod is great enough to justify the cost is quite personal and subjective I guess. You would also have to factor in the following: a. The video capabilities b. Gapless play ( unless you rockbox the imod) c. Song searching capability of the iPod Video d. Ease of warranty (for imod Vinnie provides "life time warranty" but only for labour charges. Parts will be paid by the owner. Also the mailing to US to repair) e. If you would use lineout dock to connect to speakers, eg ipod hifi, bose sound dock. (imod disables the lineout dock audio function, only left with charging and data transfer You might want to check this thread out. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=233713 Have fun being in the dilemma. Its a situation all of us enjoy being in don't we. |

Audio Fidelity, ipod 4th Generation is only good if you intend to have it imod. Else, just stock line and headphone out, 5th Generation is better and decent enough for listening. |

Thanks. You guys really help me a lot. Thanks for comments and suggestion. This forum really make me comfortable to share experience among members and discuss about the issues we face. Members here are put their efforts and helping each others. I think that better buy 5.5G iPod Video 80GB as it cheaper, provided more storage, brighter screen, new software features and does good sound too. Or save the money wait for 6Gen iPod and so... Thanks guys. Nice to know you all.

The 5.5 gen 80gb ipod cost around $600 and I have calculated already, it will be cheaper if you buy your ipod photo 60gb from singapore and then send it over to vinnie to imod it. It will cost close to 700 bucks but not more than that. Factor in a decent interconnect which will not cost more than the 100US dollars that you mentioned above, it will be around 750 dollars. So it is for you to judge if the extra 100 or so dollars is worth it? For me I think it is definitely worth it as I have heard Ryners imod and am totally poisoned by it In short, it is no competition with the ipod 5.5 gen in terms of SQ. The imod blows it away

My bad, I did not explain clearly in my earlier post. There were some mistakes also and I have edited it myself. What I meant, is that a good interconnect would not set you back by 100 US dollars. So in total, you will only need to spend $750 to complete a imod setup since you already have an amp already. |

How nice that i own a iMod and is able to share the experience with you. For the increase of SQ to make me get one is really worth it but the wait for it is horrendously slow and if you are willing to wait for it you will be rewarded greatly because it's 1 of the best DAP around. It is still best to give it a audition so that you could judge for yourself. Do give us a visit at Jaben So that we could at least let you audition it. You could give me a PM or something if you wish to try out mine yea i am more then willing to share the joy around.

Current Rig Redwine Imod 60GB Photo "Apple Lossless", Xtra X-1, Mamba, OVC TC20, Crossroad MylarOne -Team Imod Life is full of junction, right judgement will reward you greatly while a wrong move will sometime gives you less of a reward but never ever do nothing and let the chances pass by thats the biggest regret. Audio Fidelity, maybe another option will be to get the Kenwood HD30GB9. The pricing is same as imod. Sound is said to be very good. http://www.audiocubes.com/category/Audio+G...MP3_Player.html |
