hullo guys, glad to finally be registered here- much to wilson's coaxing
just bought my 1st IEM yesterday, a super.fi 5, and most of my music started to become crappy. i was thinking that it might be caused by the sensitivity and precision of the IEM, thus can anyone help me with the following:- converting my current MP3 into proper format, for my listening pleasure.. btw, my kit's an ipod, and i hope somehow, some of my old tracks can be savaged as i've lost most of the CD format.. |

It's going to be difficult, considering MP3 is a "lossy" format. There's no way you're getting those lost bits back. Higher quality earphones have a tendency to be very revealing, in that faults that were not readily apparent in the original recording suddenly jumps into sharp, uncomfortable relief
You never mentioned what was the bit rate of your MP3's - I assume they were at least 128kps. Is there a way to tweak the EQ settings in your iPod to compensate? |

Actually at 224 and above , there shouldn't be much difference between lossy and lossless formats . OK lah , most likely 192 might not satisfy you anymore ... so you might want to head up to 320 ? you should refer to headfi for these , 'cause they have some on current discussion between lossy and lossless formats . Which iPod is yours by the way ? |

I personally find it difficult to hear the difference between 320kpbs LAME encoded MP3 files and lossless ones. However, your mileage may vary, I probably have rather lousy hearing. The best way would be to re-rip the tracks from whatever CDs you have left and live with the rest. Or alternatively, buy new CDs.

To Thread Starter, if you like to eq your music, you might want to try out rockbox firmware. 5.5th Gen 80gb ipod and 2nd Gen ipod nano do not support rockbox |

personal experience. i can hear subtle difference between 320kbps MP3 format v Lossless. Lossless sounds better. Of course, storage space is an important aspect to consider. If space is no issue, Lossless is the way to go. As what some people might say, you can reconvert a lossless to 320kbps but not the other way round. This is important if the songs you ripping is from borrowed cds. |

if all your stuff is in mp3 format, there's not much you can do. the crackles and pops due to poor compression will probably sound worse if you re-encode them to a higher bitrate or wav. you might consider running your mp3s through a mp3 scrubber. If you have all the original CDs, I would recommend you recompress them using itunes. ALAC is a wonderful format if you got an ipod. AAC is pretty darned good at 256, with file size comparable to a 256mp3, but sound quality as good as a 320mbits. If you don't have the original CDs, then you might want to go look for FLAC sources, decode them to wav and recompress them to suit your ipod. |

Buying a pair of HD650's made me have to buy a new soundcard and re-encode most of my music. Most of my CD's are still back in Holland so I', stuck with buying them again or make a trip back. You can't help badly encoded MP3's though. |

Wait....does purchased music from iTunes come in such high bit rates like 192 or 320kps? I was under the impression that they average about 128kps, though I could be wrong.....I rarely buy downloaded music, and the only one I bought from was Candyrat Records, which comes in DRM-free 192kps VBR mp3's. Which sounds awesome, btw

And now for the specifics: iTunes customers will have the choice of 256kbps, non-DRM'ed tracks for $1.29 per, or the same songs in regular 128kbps AAC locked up all nice and tight with FairPlay for the usual 99 cents. What's more, any EMI tunes you've ever downloaded from the store can be upgraded to the new, higher-quality versions for just 30 cents apiece. - taken from Engadget Now, when is iTunes coming to us? |

I think the perception is that most users do not care as much about bitrate quality, but I believe 128kbps AAC outperforms 128kbps MP3? Can anyone confirm what the X-Fi actually does? All I hear is equalisation for the extreme frequencies, but details restoration is more like a marketing gimmick. |

Ahdui and I actually did a review on it, back when we just started out. http://z10.invisionfree.com/headphonehaven...p?showtopic=165 http://z10.invisionfree.com/headphonehaven...p?showtopic=168 But to answer your questions, it does not restore quality in any ways but rather works more like a DSP. |
