CrossRoads MylarOne; Photographic Review and Impressions

I believe running an external amp is much easier on a pair of headphones than using the standard output especially when higher volumes are concerned. This is because of the added headroom an amp provides as the #1 speaker killer is distortion or clipping which occurs when the typically small output stage of an ipod etc. runs out of steam to drive the speakers any louder so it clips or flattens the top of the audio waveform.

Severe clipping is like sending a pulsed DC voltage through your speaker drivers which inturn overheats the voice coil causing it to burn out. I was running an amp at home rated at 1000w into 2 ohms into my 30w rated speakers for years with absolutely no issues. It went as loud as hell and sounded much better than the 15w amp I had previously. Think of it like a high output car engine. You can feather the throttle all day and drive like a granny but when you put your foot down you have the power in reserve to get up to speed quickly or to put it another way an external amp is a Skyline-GTR where as the standard headphone output is Toyota Crown.

Bottom line is high power is not going to damage headphones as easily as not having enough.

I really wonder why the MylarOne and TC-20 is always returned for exchange by the few familiar faces? Some the users did not have a single problem even on the second batch of TC-20. I doubt it is pure luck.

The MylarOne or any mylar earphone is sensitive to pick up static easily as you insert the 1/8" plug into the headphone jack. ;)

now you talk of it, i wonder does it relate to how we insert Mylar canal phones into our ear. Maybe something to do with the air pressure within the ear and the driver

Well actually if we can't attain an air-tight seal, this is highly not the problem. ;)

there can never be a 100% seal, cos our ears and nose are connected...so i think pressure inside the ears are fairly constant?

correct me if i'm wrong

CrossRoads MylarOne's are definately good replacements for the TC20's:)

Hmm...
Dun really remember anyone buying while I entered... When did you buy your stuff. I went there around 7.45 or so.

Anyway, the crossroads are definitely nice. But I notice that their sound isn't that natural, compared to the sony e888 i'm using.
Both earphones excel in clarity. You could hear many minor details such as even the piano pedalling, and some other minor sounds that normally couldn't be heard. The e888 is more balanced than the mylarone, and has a softer, although still clear tone. The mylarone has a crispier and sharper feel to it, which I don't feel is bad, but its just personal preference. The mylarone feels like it has a bit lack of bass, although tweaking the eq helps a bit. I tried both using someone's player + amp and found that the mylarone has a extremely nice sound and is much much more different un-amped. The e888 sounds nicer but the change isn't that great.
The e888 is slightly easier to drive than the mylarone, but both are still quite easy to drive. Stated impedance for both is 16 ohms.

As for the overall physical quality, the e888 is definitely superior to the mylarones. mylarones cables are slightly flimsy and thin, a bit more prone to entanglement while the e888 has thicker and nicer wires. The L-plug of the e888 is also more solid, i feel, than the straight plug that the mylarones have (maybe its personal preference) The isolation is okay, as i tested it while taking an mrt back. The only sounds I hear is the "Ding dong, next stop is ...." which was quite muffled and soft. While having music on, I couldn't hear the people next to me chatting so it was considered not bad.

Overall, I think the MylarOne is a good buy as it offers a nice sound quality for its price range. I would definitely consider buying an amp with it too x) if i had the budget and an mp3 player such as an ipod or zen v or clix.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

I believe we have met in Jaben just now (Feburary 22). ;) I might or might not spoke to you guys just now.
Congrats on your MylarOne purchase and hope you had fun. I also believe you will be hooked into audio as leisure or 'life' for some of the enthusiasts.

Enjoy your stay in the Forum.

For those who keep having spoilt earphones, it might be due to DC introduced by the amp or player. Even if it is played softly, the DC will kill your phones.

OK ... how to prevent that accidental DC current ?

So what is the point here? Get amplifiers or players that doesn't run on DC?

i think he means DC Offset.
having an constant of current output even tough the amp is idle.
that can actually heat up voice coil, and when extra current supplied, it will easier to spoil the drive.
just assume =)
it might be sensitive for thinner voice coil.

I think there is almost no way to prevent this problem. Probably we just have to be gentle on the volume knob. ;)

In fact the moment we insert the stereo plug into the jack, "Spark!". And also when we turn on the amplifier (if any). Music starts.. then etc..

Sigh, sad to say that my MylarOne has also kicked the bucket. No sound from the right channel. Quite disappointed as I take good care of my things so I really did not expect it to fail (I've never had any earphone/headphone failures before).
Total usage time was probably less than 40 hours...amped with a PA2V2 about 75% of the time, but when it died I was running it straight out of my iriver.

Oh well. Gonna bring it back for a replacement. Guess I have to be even more careful with the new pair

With so many defects, I don't think it's user-related problems. Maybe a manufacturing issue or problems inherent in the design. Maybe to achieve the good SQ, the driver was made with structural weaknesses.

It could also be the humidity in our country, I do not know for sure the actual cause of the problems but I sure pity those guys who are trying to buy them through the mass orders in other forums. Imagine the look on their faces when their set conk off. :D
