Hey guys im currently running music from the computer to a unamped akg k501. The sound is good.. but it somehow seems that all the details are cramped together. Is it true that only an amp can make the sound sound fantastic?

yes, you need to be amped to realise the full potential, and the burn-in only begins when the cans are amped .

Does any amp make a diffrence? Say is an Xtra amp enough or something better?

i feel the xtra has very good synergy with the K501. but don take my words for it, why not bring your cans down to jaben and try for yourself.

the burn-in only begins when the cans are amped .

This is how urban legends start.

As long as the headphones are being driven (from your DAP, Computer, PCDP...etc), the drivers are moving. When the drivers are moving (meaning there is sound coming out), it is being 'burnt-in'.

You might as well say, that you can hear sound from the headphones only when they are amped.

Good god, this may be possibility the dumbest statement I've heard in this forum yet.

lol, chill it yongchris

jenhwa, so as far to my knowledge, burn-in is occuring whenever the drivers are moving with energy pulsing through them.

and supersheep(VERY NICE NAME BTW :D ) just hop down to jaben, however bring more money than you have for your budget, you MIGHT just end up spending more. uncle wilson is an expert poisoner! :P

my bad... sorry if you are offended by my understanding/belief of burn-in.

what i experienced from running the cans of my pc for a week, the sq improved,
and then running it on a amp for another week, the sq then improved somemore.

i assume the cans are never truly be burnt in unamped.

i can only agree to disagree, but would not venture to call you stupid.

ahh. I get it.
ok. so if you had run it the first week on the amp, it would have burnt in straight away?

oh wait. I've got one for you. first week on the amp, sq improve. Second week on the PC, sq improve somemore... which means... running on the PC actually burns in the cans.

ok folks. QED. running on the PC actually burns in the cans.

I must write a article on this burn-in revelation for the mag.
