If you added about $100 to the budget, the K601 comes to mind. Otherwise, I can't really think of any headphones. A Grado (Leaks quite a bit of sound though) at the price point would be the SR125 (which is decent, but lacks the expansive soundstage).

Audio Technica's AD series?

Hmm, the K501 is also a good choice.

Wow, you sound like uncle wilson's online live time stock chacking machine... Anyway, to TS, i think you should audition the K501 as well if you're making a trip down to jaben another day.

The K501 would be slightly bass-light (though I love how they sound, really realistic).

Wide soundstage. Nice vocals.

Preferably amped.

haha! i got myself a k501 today! Pure audio bliss though it sounds pretty raw at the moment! Very detailed, wide soundstage and great highs and mids, though to TS, bass might be a problem as the k501's bass is a tad too lean and tight (correct me if i am wrong)t. Nonetheless, its a great can and my 1st. :D

Althought it may be a little bass light, I find the K501's very suitable for jazz and bossa nova. Really liked them plus they've got a great price tag / performance ratio! And if i'am not wrong, dogfight's got a PA2V2 that he can use temporarily with the K501's if he were to get them.

Btw, dogfight, have you thought of raising your budget up a little?

nope i didn't get the amp from him, and nope i'm not going to get an amp anytime soon..about raising up the budget..i'm not very enthusiastic about it..wait till i audition the k501's before making the decision..although it won't be a very fast one as i'm taking my time contemplating.

anyway, razer has pmed me about everything and it was all a mistake. my apologies and lets not talk about it anymore from this post on thanks!

Just a summary review of the A900, pardon for my bad writing of review, never wrote one before, so apologize in advanced.

Equipment used:

Marantz CD63 SE (T.S.Lim modded) -> Little Dot 2+ -> Audio Technica A900
Default IC and power cords.

I feel this pair of cans is quite clarity, can hear the different instruments separately.
The sound is like in front of you, example the singer is singing in front of you in your room, good soundstage, can easily hear which instruments is in which direction.
And its is warm sounding, engaging and quite dynamic, the bass can go quite deep and controlled. (Espically on the track #2 "The Girl From Ipanema" from this cd, have both male and female vocals)

The con is, it doesn't work well with rock/metal or fast music, cause it will seems kinda too slow for it, dunno how to explain, if you listen yourself you will know, don't have the kick.

Overall, this is my cans for listening to Bossa Nova/Jazz, I have other cans to listen to Metal/Rock/Blues.
I would say this is a well worth pair of cans to buy if you are intending to listen mostly on Bossa Nova/Jazz and not much fast music.

Lastly a note, is that my cans and amps are fully burned, 400-500 hours, and your setup maybe different from my setup.
So the output will varies.

hmm... i think AD900 may suit u... i listen to jazz and bassanova on my AD900... I bought it rather than A900 because its open, has good clarity, not veiled like senns, and it has a wider sound stage than my SR80. And its very comfortable!
In Dubai:
- MS2i
- KSC75
- Zen Aurvana
In Singapore:
- SR80
